Ah, I thought my memory was failing me; it seems I remember the US being upset at the outcome of the elections there. Actually, more than upset.

My guess is that it is more likely that radical Islamists would assassinate Arafat than the Israelis. What would they gain by having a moderate replaced by more radical elements? Arafat was willing to compromise, and that might have been his demise.
