Mark Johnson was walking in Santa Monica, California, when he heard the voice of Roger Ridley (deceased in 2005) singing "Stand By Me"; it was this experience that sent Playing For Change on its mission to connect the world through music.

4 albums, hundreds of musicians, dozens of countries - we could post songs for days and never get tired of it.

What do you dudes think about The Byrd's?

I've never really listened to them in depth, only having jammed out to a few of their better known songs.

I've been exploring their discography last night and today and they've got a good bit of good songs.

It's always good to discover new (old) music.

Lots of memories with them; "Hey Mr Tamborine Man" and "Turn Turn Turn" come to mind right off. Plus, they sort of kick started a lot of other groups. I guess every era is special to those who experienced it, but I think some eras were more special than others.

Yep, they were the base for a lot to come. The Flying Burrito Brothers and didn't that Crosby guy go on to do something?

Eight Miles High was influential to a lot of 16 year old kids

Folk hero Woody Guthrie penned this timeless tune in 1940, though it wasn't released until years later. Originally titled “God Blessed America for Me,” it was composed as a sarcastic retort to Irving Berlin's overly patriotic “God Bless America.” Some of Guthrie's original lyrics were far more radical than the ones still sung in classrooms to this day—including the final verse, which says "One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple / By the Relief Office I saw my people / As they stood hungry, I stood there wondering if / This land was made for you and me."

"My national anthem" interesting idea. I have generally thought that "America the Beautiful" would make a better anthem than "Star Spangled Banner" for several reasons, including the melody. But that was before I ever read the verses past the first. Eek.
