The Music Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

One of my favorite songwriters and musicians playing a great song in one of those around the world Playing for Change collaborations.

Enjoy

Nice. 135,313,451 views!

Mark Johnson was walking in Santa Monica, California, when he heard the voice of Roger Ridley (deceased in 2005) singing "Stand By Me"; it was this experience that sent Playing For Change on its mission to connect the world through music.

4 albums, hundreds of musicians, dozens of countries - we could post songs for days and never get tired of it.

Playing For Change YT videos

Looks like Stand By Me was their first song and just their 3rd video. "Playing For Change" has a clever double meaning.

Another band that's way under appreciated is T.Rex. The entire Electric Warrior album is good stuff.

Well, maybe "Music Thread" is a bit of a stretch for Jonas Brothers, but still...

"Nick Jonas Was Groped By a Fan During a Jonas Brothers Concert" Oh, puh-leeze.
Best comment: "If that were David Lee Roth or Vince Neil, they would have turned around and made sure she was added to the back stage experience."

What do you dudes think about The Byrd's?

I've never really listened to them in depth, only having jammed out to a few of their better known songs.

I've been exploring their discography last night and today and they've got a good bit of good songs.

It's always good to discover new (old) music.

Lots of memories with them; "Hey Mr Tamborine Man" and "Turn Turn Turn" come to mind right off. Plus, they sort of kick started a lot of other groups. I guess every era is special to those who experienced it, but I think some eras were more special than others.

Yep, they were the base for a lot to come. The Flying Burrito Brothers and didn't that Crosby guy go on to do something?

Eight Miles High was influential to a lot of 16 year old kids

Edit
I watched Echo In the Canyon a couple of days ago. Good interviews about this time.

Found while looking for something else. I did not know this:

Folk hero Woody Guthrie penned this timeless tune in 1940, though it wasn't released until years later. Originally titled “God Blessed America for Me,” it was composed as a sarcastic retort to Irving Berlin's overly patriotic “God Bless America.” Some of Guthrie's original lyrics were far more radical than the ones still sung in classrooms to this day—including the final verse, which says "One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple / By the Relief Office I saw my people / As they stood hungry, I stood there wondering if / This land was made for you and me."

"My national anthem" interesting idea. I have generally thought that "America the Beautiful" would make a better anthem than "Star Spangled Banner" for several reasons, including the melody. But that was before I ever read the verses past the first. Eek.

So what would I pick for "my" national anthem? Probably agree with yours.
Greece has a great national anthem as long as it's instrumental. Lyrics not so much.

Or maybe adapt the Michigan fight song to a national anthem.

Ugh. The first verse is cool, except for the god reference.

It's been decades since I've been able to provide a candidate for either of those because during my high schools years or just after, this is just some of the music that was being released:
Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven
Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon
Beatles Sgt. Pepper
Beatles Abbey Road
Beatles Let it Be
Derek and the Dominoes Layla
Bob Dylan Nashville Skyline
The Who Who's Next
The Who Quadrophenia
Moody Blues Nights in White Satin
Plus, pretty much everything by Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Allman Brothers (with Duane and Gregg), and Jefferson Airplane.
Hope you can understand
