Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Wha wha I've been called out so now I get to act like a 5 year old. True to the stinger tantrum. Stinger your quote has been posted and definitions have been posted and you thinking ghetto is all about blacks is racist. Now throw some more names out there will ya. Seems as though you and vred everytime YOU TWO bring up race you have denigrate blacks. Shame on ya's!
I'm still trying to figure out why you two bring race into conversations where it's never mentioned to begin with. Other then the obvious and that is your HATRED of other RACES. Give us another reason? On the BRN forum y'all were bringing race int nearly every thread towards the end.

Maybe some of you guys are older (or younger?) than I, but growing up we used the adjective "ghetto" to describe something that is of shoddy quality. No racial connotations. Similarly to how I've heard people use the term "redneck" around here.

Good luck. Maybe you'll start catching on to how royally you screw things up if you go all the way to 5.

True to the stinger tantrum.

Sorry. No tantrum. Tantrum implies anger and frustration. That would imply that you're important enough to cause anger or frustration. You're not.

Stinger your quote has been posted and definitions have been posted and you thinking ghetto is all about blacks is racist.

No, it's not. It's about living in 21st century America. It's about living in the real world, not your insular little world of massive ignorance and delusion.

I work with more blacks in one day than you've worked with in your lifetime. I know how they use it. I know how modern culture uses it. I know how black teenagers use it.

I posted common definitions to make my point. The fact that you're too stubborn to accept reality and insist on continuing in your willful ignorance in no way affects what I said.

Now throw some more names out there will ya.

Dumbass should cover it. If you want to look at the real racist, go find a mirror and look at the guy who stereotypes blacks wearing pimp and ho outfits by saying that they're "just blacks dressed up nicely." Dumbass.

Seems as though you and vred everytime YOU TWO bring up race you have denigrate blacks.

Seems like you're dumber than dirt and illiterate as hell. Niether Vrede nor I have denigrated blacks on this or any other forum.

If you want to look at the real racist, go find a mirror and look at the guy who stereotypes blacks wearing pimp and ho outfits by saying that they're "just blacks dressed up nicely." Dumbass.

I'm still trying to figure out why you two bring race into conversations where it's never mentioned to begin with.

That's because you're dumber than dirt. It was pretty obvious from my question, and it's been explained a couple of times since.

YOU'RE the one who repeatedly used the term "racist." I simply asked you what you meant by it, thinking maybe since you used the word, you knew the connotation.

Bad assumption on my part.

Other then the obvious and that is your HATRED of other RACES.

The only things that are obvious are your stupidity, your illiteracy, your stubbornness, and your willful ignorance. Or maybe that's just your stupidity.

Nowhere have I mentioned any hatred of any race. That's just your stupidity and faulty reasoning in action.

Know any white ghettoes in the U.S.?

Similar how? Does "redneck" provoke an image of anything other than a white guy (or occasionally gal)?

I can sort of understand yours and Colonel Taylor's ignorance of the origin of using "ghetto" as an adjective, but the origin is undeniable. If Colonel Taylor just had the stones to post, "Opps, that well known implication didn't occur to me," this discussion would not have gone on for page after page.
I get what you're saying about the origin of the word. Sort of like how people often use the word "gypped" to describe getting ripped off. Tons of people use the term without trying to imply bad things about gypsies, from which the term originated.

I grew up in the northeast outside of Philly. Maybe the word took on a different meaning us growing up, because when someone described something as "ghetto", I would think of something that's junky and falling apart. For example: "that guys car is ghetto" brings to mind an image of a car probably held together by duct-tape and super-glue, with a custom spray-paint paint job and a spoiler constructed of aluminum cans.

It's always possible for someone to use a term without knowing the origin or current connotation. There's probably still some around that might think they could offer a "compliment" to Homer by saying he's wearing a "colorful and gay Christmas outfit," but harking back to days of yore still doesn't change what the term has become to mean.

If the Colonel thinks his Wal-Mart is "ghetto," he can certainly say so. But he needs to understand what he's saying before he says it to the wrong person.

Which reminds me...a lot of sayings and song lyrics get updated as language changes. The original "Old Kentucky Home" which they sing and run the lyrics of at the Kentucky Derby, was "The sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home...Tis summer, the darkies are gay."

They changed it to "'tis summer, the people are gay."
Probably ought to consider another update.

Words have both definition and context. Change the context and often the definition or connotation changes. If the Colonel's father had a brother named "Tom," Colonel might not think twice about referring to him as "Uncle Tom." If Tom is a black guy, however, not even a semi-literate person would refer to him as "Uncle Tom." At least not more than once.

Agreed.

I've always found it interesting that when reading texts translated from other languages, there are sometimes no exact translations of specific words. Oftentimes the translator will leave the word untranslated and give a sentence or two explaining the concept or idea behind the word. Given time, the idea the untranslatable word symbolizes eventually becomes intelligible and part of your vernacular.

Stephen Foster's minstrel song, "The Old Folks at Home," is the state song of Florida. It has caused everyone to mispronounce the name of the river, Suwannee, by pronouncing it "swa nee."

The song is about a slave lamenting the loss of his old plantation and, being written in 1851, would naturally be accepting of the slavery of the time.

The lyrics are:
Way down upon de Swanee Ribber,
Far, far away,
Dere's wha my heart is turning ebber,
Dere's wha de old folks stay.
All up and down de whole creation
Sadly I roam,
Still longing for de old plantation,
And for de old folks at home.

Chorus
All de world am sad and dreary,
Eb-rywhere I roam;
Oh, darkeys, how my heart grows weary,
Far from de old folks at home!

2nd verse
All round de little farm I wandered
When I was young,
Den many happy days I squandered,
Many de songs I sung.
When I was playing wid my brudder
Happy was I;
Oh, take me to my kind old mudder!
Dere let me live and die.

3rd Verse
One little hut among de bushes,
One dat I love
Still sadly to my memory rushes,
No matter where I rove.
When will I see de bees a-humming
All round de comb?
When will I hear de banjo strumming,
Down in my good old home?

The song never mentions Florida, mentions the "Swanee Ribber" one time, and then

I had one friend who was asked to play "Swannee River" at a political event in Tallahassee, so he did . . . original lyrics and all. He had to sue them to get paid. Another good friend walked onto the main stage at the Florida Folk Festival, sang the original lyrics and walked back off in protest. We tried to get that song changed for years.

Governor Crist refused to have it sung at his inauguration and instructed a member of the House to look for another song. They came up with "Florida: Where the Sawgrass Meets the Sky." The legislature balked, and they named in the state anthem and kept "Old Folks at Home" for the state song.

The legislature "expurgated" the original lyrics in 2008, when they adopted the alternative tune as the state anthem.

I guess 157 years of "Oh, darkeys, how my heart grows weary" went right out the window and nobody knows them anymore. I hope someone told the Library of Congress.

So, sans the darkeys and the Swannee Ribber, our official state song is still a song about a slave missing the old plantation, and it never once mentions Florida.

And people still mispronounce Suwannee.

Which is exactly why I asked him what he meant . . . right before he went off the deep end.

Wasn't that long of a trip.

Oh, well, I guess we can always start talking about upper-middle-class you-know-whats.

But it's not just origin, which is actually European and about Jews. The current definition for "ghetto" is racial, however they use it in (white?) Philly suburbs.

In contrast, the current definition of "gyp" is as you say and may or may not be from "gypsy".
Here's some possible etymology of the word "gyp": http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/gyp
probably short for gypsy
First Known Use: 1750
The current definition of the word isn't loaded with racial connotations, however when it was coined it more than likely was, if in fact it truly did derive from a shortening of the word "gypsy". The word probably gradually became disassociated with the negative, racist, attributes associated with gypsies eventually becoming part of everyday vocabulary.

There are probably other words where this is the case as well, as words don't remain static and can gradually shift semantically in time.
You aren't doing it wrong if no one knows what you are doing.
