2020 Elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

That's just sick that around 44% of voters prefer 45SHOLE. What a fucked up country we're in.

And the winner of the 2020 Dem primaries is:

NC (110) has the 3rd most Super Tuesday delegates, CA (415), TX (228), Vermont (16), American Samoa (6). It'll be nice for the SC/NC ads to end.

I like Bernie!, but it will still be sad if the Dem race gets whittled down to the 3 or possibly 4 (wealth never has to drop out) most ancient white men. Might be awhile before we have a non-ancient Black Latina lesbian POTUS.

Not even a crazy hope for Liz! now, I'll be voting for Bernie! and maybe donating after Tues.

Tom Steyer Drops Out Of 2020 Presidential Race

Courteous of him to do so before Super Tuesday so that however many people don't waste their votes.
New NC poll: Sanders leads tight primary race, Gov. Cooper has highest job approval in state
Feb 28, 2020

... Sanders leads the pack among voters who plan to vote in the Democratic primary. He is the first choice of 19.5 percent of voters and two other candidates, former Vice President Joe Biden (17.9 percent) and former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg (17 percent), are right on his heels.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (10.9 percent) and former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (10 percent) round out the top five.

Sanders is also the top second choice of 18.2 percent of voters. Bloomberg is the next closest with 12.7 percent.

When it comes to the governor’s race, Cooper is ahead of fellow Democratic candidate Ernest Reeves, according to the poll. More than 65 percent of Democratic primary voters said they plan to vote for Cooper compared to 5 percent for Reeves.

There was also more good news for the governor in the poll. Cooper is the major political figure in the state with the highest job approval rating at 45.1 percent and a double-digit net positive of more than 10 points.

PAC is spending $1 million in NC’s Democratic Senate primary. Does it have GOP ties?

A new super PAC is spending $1.6 million on TV ads on behalf of Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Erica Smith, who lags far behind her main competitor in fundraising.

... Democrats believe the ad is a Republican attempt to undermine Cunningham.

“The fact that Washington Republicans are trying to meddle in our Democratic Primary should outrage every Democrat in North Carolina,” said state Rep. Cecil Brockman, a Cunningham supporter. “This is the latest, desperate sign that Republicans are scared to run against Cal Cunningham.“ ...
:obscene-birdiered:

Sleazy Repugs being sleazy Repugs, it's what they do.
Feb 28 article:
Democratic Senate candidate Cal Cunningham looks set to run away with the nomination as the poll shows him up 29 points on Erica Smith.
Haha, the Repugs wasted $1.6 million. Cunningham ads claimed he's a progressive, but not in ways that'll hurt him.
...Sen. Thom Tillis is also up nearly 50 points on his closest primary opponent, Paul Wright. Although Tillis should win the Republican nomination for Senate, his approval numbers are not particularly good. Just over 34 percent of North Carolina voters approve of the job he’s doing while nearly 39 percent disapprove. Almost 27 percent said they “don’t know” how Tillis is handling his job as a senator.
Tillis losing would be so cool! Could even tip the Senate balance. Guess I'll be donating to Cunningham, too.
You can click here for the full poll results, cross-tabs and methodology.

The poll of registered voters in North Carolina, which was conducted from Feb. 16-24, had a sample size of 1,024 voters and a margin of error of +/- 3 percent, according to the methodology.

Thanks, interesting. If you then filter by "Larger black population", it aligns with Biden's strength, which makes me a little sad for 1960s civil rights warrior Bernie!

"More young residents", "More college graduates" - Mixed, but Biden barely on top.
"More 60+ residents" - Mixed, but Biden on top.
"Fewer college graduates" - Biden triumphs.

I was surprised to see in the rural areas of Greenville that Bernie triumphed with the fewer college graduate vote. Interesting.

There's not much of SC "with a high share of residents with college degrees." :P

We've all heard that youth like Bernie! and Blacks like Biden. I have not heard how the preferences break down by education level in general. Have you?

POSSIBLE factors affecting your observation:

Bernie! does well among all White Dems, and rural Greenville County is very white.
Note: Not sure how many Latinos y'all have, but NV showed Bernie! doing great among them, too.

Lack of college is often due to social or economic factors out of a person's control. Maybe these folks think that democratic socialism can't be all bad.

Those are precinct demographics, not Dem voter demographics. For example, I know that poorly educated Whites lean Repug. Maybe they stayed home and thus skewed the education demographic since it was the better educated ones voting Dem.

There was a push for Repugs to crossover and vote for Bernie! Idk if this really happened, and I can't think why it would be more successful in rural Greenville County than elsewhere. I saw one headline suggesting that it was not catching on, anyhow, but did not read the article.

Bernie! appeals more to drunks and meth heads ;) .

Mayor Pete is out, ditto. Some are saying that fellow mod Biden gets all his voters. Could be, but I'm not so sure. Not all voters decide based on left-right and Mayor Pete also represented a generation that favors Bernie!, DC outsiders, and radicals merely by being a serious gay candidate. We'll see.

Even though he did not need to be in Selma today:

Oh yeah good point about the Republican crossover vote for Bernie. The gville GOP (I think) told republican voters to vote for Bernie in the primaries; they believe he has the worst chance of beating Trump. We have open primaries.

Well, it's starting to look like the final nominee with be Biden. Just a hunch, mind you....
What makes you think that? Bernie's supposedly leading in the delegate-rich CA, TX and possibly NC in tomorrow's vote.

fivethirtyeight.com says:

How each candidate’s chances of winning have changed over time
1990 needed for the nomination. Latest odds:

No one: 2 in 3 (65%)
Sanders: 1 in 5 (20%), 1,599
Biden: 1 in 7 (15%), 1,455
Bloomberg: <1 in 100 (0.2%), 595
Warren: <1 in 100 (0.1%), 243
All others: <1 in 100
Klobuchar: 64

If so, a 2nd ballot with the Super Delegates voting will see competing forces:
The principle of rewarding the top delegate winner, even if not a majority winner;
The inclination towards the "safe", establishment candidate.

We'll see.

Dem ballot
All my picks, so that I can gloat or cry about them Wed am.
Mostly just listing my preference and a prime reason. I have further notes on my preferences and their opponents if anyone cares.

POTUS
With the NC polls so tight at the top and winning even a slight plurality apparently mattering a lot, I’m abandoning Liz! and voting for Bernie!

US Senate
Cal Cunningham is running on a decent platform and is so far ahead in the Dem primary polls that I’m not bothering to research the race. You’re going down in Nov, Tillis.

US House of Representatives District 11
https://ballotpedia.org/North_Carolina% ... l_District
I’m not happy about the options.

Michael O'Shea - “The Progressive Choice for Western North Carolina”
https://osheaforcongress.com/
Is a Bernie supporter. Excellent platform:
https://osheaforcongress.com/platform/

Governor
Roy Cooper, incumbent, Repug slayer

Lieutenant Governor
https://ballotpedia.org/North_Carolina_ ... tion,_2020

Easier than I thought it would be.
Terry Van Duyn - “Proven Leadership for North Carolina“
http://votevanduyn.com
Great resume:

Great endorsers:
http://votevanduyn.com/endorsementsltgov/
Good platform:
http://votevanduyn.com/issues/

Auditor
https://ballotpedia.org/North_Carolina_State_Auditor

The current officeholder is Beth Wood (D). She was first elected in 2008. I’ve not heard of any scandals, so she’s got my vote.

Commissioner of Agriculture

Jennifer Austin Wadsworth
https://www.jennawadsworth.com/
Great resume:
https://www.jennawadsworth.com/meet-jenna.html
Amazing endorsement list:

Far cuter than her opponents ;) .

Superintendent of Public Instruction

Great resume:

Great resume:
https://votekeithsutton.com/about-keith/
Good endorsers:
https://votekeithsutton.com/support/
Thin platform:
https://votekeithsutton.com/issues/platform/

1. Jen Mangrum
2. Keith Sutton
Both better than their opponents. I'm okay with it if Sutton wins. I may even switch to him so that my ballot isn't quite so White.

Treasurer
https://ballotpedia.org/North_Carolina_ ... tion,_2020

Dimple Ajmera - “CPA • Public Servant • Fighter”, Born in India.
https://www.dimpleajmera.com
Still have to research her 2 opponents, but I really hope that I can vote for Treasurer “Dimple”.
Great resume:
https://www.dimpleajmera.com/#about
She boasts about Jan polling results showing her “leading among candidates for Treasurer.”
She’s got 10% vs 5%, 6% and 80% Undecided  , and I’ll bet that’s just people that like the name “Dimple” like I do.
https://www.publicpolicypolling.com/wp- ... ry2020.pdf
Great endorsers:
https://www.dimpleajmera.com/endorsements

Ronnie Chatterji - “Educator. Economist. Innovator.” Also Indian-American, we have a legit stereotype going on here.
https://www.ronniechatterji.com
Incredible resume:
https://www.ronniechatterji.com/about-ronnie
Cal grad. Obama admin.
Great endorsers:
https://www.ronniechatterji.com/copy-of-endorsements

Matthew Leatherman - “Educate & Care: A Plan for the Future of NC”
He’s a tool  .
https://mattfornc.com
Good individual endorsers, no organizational ones:
https://mattfornc.com/endorsements

1. Ronnie Chatterji
2. Dimple Ajmera
I'm okay with it if Dimple wins.

NC State Senate District 48
https://ballotpedia.org/Najah_Underwood
The incumbent Repug, Chuck Edwards, really really sucks, and will be reelected.

Brian Caskey - “The Right Candidate for District 48”
That’s an unfortunate choice of words for a Dem :D .
https://www.briancaskey.com/
Good resume:
https://www.briancaskey.com/about/
Good platform. No endorsers listed, yuck.
Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey
https://ballotpedia.org/Brian_Caskey#Campaign_themes

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

“I was recently in a nursing home, and I was talking to an elderly gentleman who is a paraplegic. He has several advanced mathematics degrees and in fact still writes scholarly articles, using a computer to translate his text to speech. However, he was telling me that the care in this particular facility has regressed dramatically in the past few years, and the facility - which was previously a 'five star' Medicare facility - is now rated as a 'one star' long term care facility. I asked him what happened, and he explained that a corporation had bought out the retirement home, and had fired at least half of the staff. He is supposed to receive medical treatments every other day and he's lucky to get them once every two weeks. He sometimes lies in his own filth for days at a time because no one has the time to clean him up. Long term care facilities are now being used as corporate profit centers. This is how we are treating our elderly? He said, 'Brian, I'm going to die in here. But if we don't get you elected, it's going to happen a whole lot sooner.' That experience made me much more determined to pursue elder care as a core interest once I'm elected.”
Wow  .

Cristal Figueroa - “Together We Stand”
https://www.figueroaforncsenate2020.com
“Mexican American who was born and raised in Hendersonville”
Okay resume. No endorsers listed, yuck.
Great platform:
https://www.figueroaforncsenate2020.com/about

1. Brian Caskey, because of the anecdote he chose to share.
2. Cristal Figueroa
Both better than their opponent. I'm okay with it if Figueroa wins.

House of Representatives District 117
Open seat, a Repug will be elected.
https://ballotpedia.org/Josh_Remillard

Josh Remillard - “One Team, One Mission. Help restore Democracy in North Carolina.
http://www.joshremillard.com
“NC District 117 has been identified as being the key to turning the seats in the house.” - Huh, I wonder if a Dem really has a shot.
Looks like he could kick Repug ass, literally.

I notice in the referenced poll, "no one" is the odds on favorite, and that is ME. I planned it this way. My sudden blinding campaign and appearance just before the convention later this summer will hit like a neo neutron bomb. No donations, no favors, no compromise, no shit. I'm in it to bend it. Bloomberg buying his way into the Democratic party race, essentially.

It's almost like they're not even trying to hide the fact that the US is sliding into an oligarchy anymore. It's just so blatantly obvious and in our faces.
