Hell, I only gave it a 3 BECAUSE of the "being intoxicated" modifier. Otherwise, the thing wouldn't even register on the rating scale. And because it isn't evident if the dish is of the rare albino variety or is just dessicated from decay, an accurate rating was about as impossible as Bill Barr being a competent Attorney General.Vrede too wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 12:11 pmbilly.pilgrim wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 10:50 amCorrectVrede too wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 9:16 amneoplacebo wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 6:07 amI give it a solid 3. At best it's a calzone or stromboli, or as I called my first stromboli - pizza in a shoeGood point, but I was thinking more about roadkill needing its "filling" spilling out than whether it's pizza. Between the two of us, maybe neoplacebo's "solid 3" is too generous. Otoh, I give it a 5.5 in degree of difficulty given the "very intoxicated".

Save Farm Animals from Deadly Barn Fires!
In just two short months, more than 734,000 chickens tragically lost their lives in four separate, potentially preventable barn fires. Yet, the response from the industry has been silence. Please contact John Starkey, president of the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association, and urge him to take immediate action to prevent any more animals from being killed in barn fires.

Nope. The Hawaiian Poke is what I had for dinner a couple of nights ago. Delicious, and a favourite food. "Poke salad" is made from the poisonous weeds. Don't be so hard on poke salad. Even chicken is poisonous when not prepared correctly. I do some mushroom foraging. Chanterelles, chicken of the woods, hen of the woods, and oysters. Haven't found lions mane yet.
I found a trail in Pisgah Forest last summer with a bunch of chanterelles. Gonna check back this year again for them.

It makes you wonder how people - Native Americans, I assume - got past dying from the root or any part of it, berries, older growth, plants that have flowered, sap, and only boiling twice to discover that it's tasty and safe after 3 boilings.Ulysses wrote: ↑Tue Mar 10, 2020 10:45 pmWell, in the course of my reading, it's not that difficult to prepare, but it is essential to prepare it properly. From what I gathered:
1) Select only new young growth - leaves and tender stems.
2) Never try to eat the root or any part of it.
3) Boil the leaves/tender shoots ion plenty of water - I seem to recall 20 minutes. Then drain, rinse, and boil again in fresh boiling water. Do this at least three times. This is to get rid of the poison.
4) Never eat the berries. They are too toxic at any phase of their development. Similarly for the roots. Avoid older growth. Avoid plants that have flowered. Avoid getting the sap on your skin - one of the toxins can be absorbed through the skin.
The site I found said the leaves wind up tasting a bit like spinach, and the shoots a bit like asparagus.
Symptoms of poke weed poisoning: extreme vomiting, difficulty breathing, death.
I think I'll pass on poke weed.

Likely no different than many other foods.
How do we know that certain mushrooms are poisonous and some are edible?
Reckon what kind of experimenting and deaths came before a safe way to eat pufferfish was found.
All in all, learning to cook and rinse was probably an easier step than discovering how to bake a cake.

There used to be a tv commercial promoting something I can't remember; it was something to eat and the ad just had a bunch of kids in it. A mother brings out something to eat and all the kids look at her like she's crazy and one of the kids says "let's give it to Mikey, he'll eat anything" so they do, Mikey eats it, and the alpha kid says "he likes it." I suppose this is a testament to the power of advertising and also a revelation of the flaws of advertising; I remember the ad but not what it was selling.

Having to eat poke salad has long been a sign of poverty. As that stigma is forgotten maybe it will regain some popularity. Its actually pretty good - a lot more like spinach than other greens.

Sassafras (root beer) can cause cancer and even kill. People have drunk the tea forever, but it's taken modern science to understand that the safrole in sassafras root bark is toxic.
