Virginia House approves assault weapons ban

Virginia's House of Delegates passed legislation Tuesday afternoon that would ban the sale of certain semi-automatic firearms, including the popular AR-15 style rifles.

The vote on H.B. 961 was close, with a tally of 51-48, The Wall Street Journal reports. State Democrats currently control 55 seats in the chamber.

Despite having the support of Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D), the passage of the bill in the state's Senate isn't guaranteed, as Democrats have only have a two-seat majority in the 40-seat Senate.

The bill isn't all that revolutionary; seven states, including California and New York already have laws in place banning assault-style weapons. If the bill passes the Senate and is signed into law then Virginia would become the eighth state with such a law....

It'll be tight, may need to await the next election. Whatever, Virginia has already made huge strides. It used to be the prime origin for the pipeline of guns to the more restrictive Northeast. Those days are over.

Virginia House approves assault weapons ban

It'll be tight, may need to await the next election. Whatever, Virginia has already made huge strides. It used to be the prime origin for the pipeline of guns to the more restrictive Northeast. Those days are over.

Virginia Governor's Bill To Ban Assault Weapons Fails, With Help From His Own Party

... Four Democrats on Virginia's Senate Judiciary Committee broke ranks with their party handing the Republican minority a victory in tabling the bill for the remainder of the year. It also sent the measure to the state's Crime Commission for further review.

The bill would have banned the sale or transfer of certain assault-style weapons in Virginia. It also would have made it illegal to possess silencers and magazines holding more than 12 rounds.

Gov. Ralph Northam, a Democrat, had championed the legislation, which was part of a series of eight gun-control measures the Virginia House passed earlier this year. The seven remaining bills are still being considered in the state Senate....

Among the items lawmakers in the Virginia House have approved include one calling for universal background checks on private firearms sales and creating an extreme risk protection order, also known as a "red flag" law. Those laws allow authorities to temporarily confiscate firearms from someone thought to be a threat to themselves or others.

But then the Senate committee balked at the assault-style weapons bill.

After Monday's 10-5 vote, state Sen. L. Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth, called the four Democrats who voted to table the measure a "bunch of wimps," according to The Washington Post.

Meanwhile the National Rifle Association, which is headquartered in the Fairfax, Va., celebrated the defeat in a tweet, calling the bill "anti-American."

"The Virginia Senate Judiciary Committee voted today to reject HB961, a bill banning standard-capacity mags, future sales of suppressors and commonly-owned firearms," the tweet read. "Thank you to NRA members and gun owners who fought to defeat this anti-American legislation. #valeg"

(February 13, 2020) “A new report from the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence, Gun Violence in America: An Analysis of 2018 CDC Data, reveals that 39,740 people died from gun violence in 2018, including 24,432 by suicide and 13,958 by homicide. Notably, for the first time, the number of firearm suicide deaths in a year exceeded 24,000 — more than twice the number of alcohol-impaired driving deaths in 2018. On average, this amounts to 67 people dying by firearm suicide every day — more than the deadliest mass shooting in American history. Overall, the number of gun deaths remained relatively steady from 2017 to 2018, with 33 fewer deaths in 2018 compared to 2017 — the highest year on record. This comprehensive report delves into newly released data to illustrate the fatal toll of the gun violence epidemic in America.”

The most recent numbers show that 991 people in Louisiana died from firearms at a rate of 21.27 per 100,000 residents. The report ranks Louisiana behind Missouri and in front of Alaska for its gun death rates, while Mississippi and Alabama rank first and second.

A total of 76 children and teens died by firearm in Mississippi in 2018, 46 by homicide. That comes out to nine deaths for every 100,000 residents in the state, more than double the national average, according to an analysis of the CDC data by the nonprofit Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence.

Whaddayaknow, an armed state is not a very polite state.

In 2018, 39,740 Americans died by gun violence, a decrease of 33 deaths from 2017. While the total number of gun deaths was about on par from the year before, the country has seen an 18 percent rise in gun-related deaths since 2009. Likewise, the suicide rate increased in the same time frame by 17 percent, the study found.

I know it’s been a difficult few weeks for all of us, so I wanted to be the first to share with you some amazing news coming out of Virginia.

On Friday, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam signed a slate of historic gun violence prevention measures into law.

The new laws -- which will take effect on July 1 -- will save lives in Virginia. I am so proud of what we have finally accomplished!

... The new laws include:

Requiring background checks on all firearm sales in Virginia, which will prevent guns from ending up in dangerous hands
Establishing an Extreme Risk Protective Order (ERPO), which creates a legal mechanism for law enforcement to temporarily separate a person from their firearms when they represent a danger to themselves or others
Reinstating Virginia’s one-handgun-a-month rule to help curtail stockpiling of firearms and trafficking
Requiring gun owners to report their lost or stolen firearms to law enforcement within 48 hours
Preventing children from accessing firearms by increasing the penalty for recklessly leaving firearms in their presence ...
