News to me that one can be held indefinitely on charges other than contempt of court. But then again, we do run the Guantanamo terrorist creation center.

It sounds like this is NY law. A lot of places it's 48 hours, and the clock doesn't start until Mon 0800 if the arrest is after Fri 1700. Maybe it's even longer in some states.
