Race, lets make this serious! It is nearly 2013.

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

The last widow to be receiving a pension from the Civil War has died at 90 in NC. She married the veteran, of both the CSA and USA, in 1924 when he was 80 and she was 34 :D The math doesn't add up on this, though.....if she was 34 in 1924 she's older than 90. She must have been even younger than stated when she married the guy. Lucky him.

She was the daughter, not the wife. Her father married younger woman when he was around 80. Irene Triplett was born in 1930 when her father was almost 84. She got the pension as a person with "cognitive impairment" that entitled her to a lifelong pension as a "helpless adult" child of a veteran.

Cops (or someone) keeps painting over it - at night of course.
It gets repainted everyday.

Doh! Seems I got the daughter and wife mixed up. It was one of the first things I read this morning; I must have still been high.

A US Marine veteran stood outside the Utah State Capitol with the words 'I can't breathe' taped over his mouth for so long that his shoes started melting into the ground

Image
Temperatures were so high that the heels of Winn's shoes melted off.

... "I hope it will be seen by individuals who would normally tune out the protesters and allow them to — at least for a moment — stop and consider what is really being asked for here," he wrote.

"Equality, justice, fairness. The right to assemble. The right to be free from discrimination no matter the color of your skin. The right not to fear the police forces whose duty is to protect and serve communities. These should not be partisan political issues, but globally valid concerns we all should be willing to support together."

... In addition to the triple-digit heat, Winn's protest was all the more challenging because he has chronic fatigue that stems from traumatic brain injuries he sustained while serving in Iraq, Steck said.

Winn revealed on Reddit that he was wounded twice in the same month after he was deployed to Iraq in 2005. He received two Purple Heart medals in November of that year and was medically discharged....

If those are even his service shoes, they are at least 15 years old.

Maybe the Mexicans paid for it.
They might not have paid for it, but Mexicans probably erected it.
There is some delicious irony in the fact that he has to hide behind his only successful wall.

Hope he enjoys the view, hopefully he'll have that type of view for his upcoming prison stint.
More irony:

"People gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City, which is now on lockdown, Newsweek reported on Friday."

Maybe Mexico paid for and erected that wall, which mostly keeps the Americans in.

Statues celebrating racists torn down and defaced in Europe

The renewed push to remove monuments that celebrate racists in the United States spread across the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday when Black Lives Matter protesters toppled the statue of a British slave trader.

The statue of Edward Colston was removed in the city of Bristol Sunday; protesters pulled it off its pedestal, knelt on its neck in acknowledgement of the death of George Floyd and then tossed it into the harbor. Historians estimate Colston’s company was responsible for the selling of approximately 100,000 slaves to the Americas in the late 17th century....

Image

Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees, who is of Jamaican heritage, told BBC Radio that he agreed the statue should be removed. "I cannot pretend it was anything other than a personal affront to me to have it in the middle of Bristol, the city in which I grew up.”

A petition has been started to replace the Colston statue with one of Paul Stephenson, a British anti-racism campaigner.

The Colston removal lent momentum to an effort at Oxford University to take down the statue of Cecil Rhodes, who supported apartheid-style policies in Africa. Belgians targeted statues of King Leopold II, whose African colonization resulted in the death of millions of Congolese. A bust of Leopold in the city of Ghent was painted with “I can’t breathe,” Floyd’s final words....

In a retweet of the video of the Colston removal, former University of Mississippi wide receiver D.K. Metcalf tweeted, “Oxford, MS we next.” Oxford, where the university is located, has a large Confederate monument on campus that has been defaced during the Floyd protests.

Ole Miss administrators and students have attempted for years to move the monument to a nearby Confederate cemetery, but their efforts have been stalled by the state’s college board.

I drove past this yesterday. Just now found out what was going on:

https://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/ ... 318710002/
Greenville restaurant draws protest after owner makes racially charged comments on social media

Around 100 people protested outside of Tanner’s Big Orange restaurant in Greenville on Monday morning, voicing outrage at social media posts made by the owner.

The owner, John Allen Zeller, confirmed for The Greenville News that he made a social media post on Sunday about race and cuckolding, or women having sex with someone other than their husbands.

He has since apologized for the posts. There have been numerous comments on social media since Zeller made his posts urging people to stop eating at the restaurant because of Zeller's comments.
There was a pretty big crowd out there barbecuing and picketing.

Of course he's sorry now.

This is something I was thinking about concerning social media.

Anyone can make an account on Facebook. You can scoop someone else's photos off of the internet pretty easily, add some work/school details, and post all kinds of inflammatory remarks to provoke backlash which will likely cost said person their job.

It's kind of frightening. I could rub someone the wrong way and as revenge they could make an account with my information and ruin my life. It could happen to anyone.

One way to beat this is for social media to require proof of identity, I suppose.

I bet we're gonna see more of this in the future. Digital mobs.

This is something I was thinking about concerning social media.
...
For several reasons, I've never established much of a social media presence. I've got a Facebook account, Twitter and Instagram, but use them mainly just to occasionally read other people's stuff or post the occasional greeting to them. A couple of reasons - I don't have any interest in posting a bunch of information online, and I always wanted to avoid accidentally something I posted to be associated with the law firm.

So I'm having a hard time imagining why somebody who runs a business would think it's a good thing to post controversial or inflammatory trivial comments on their public social media. Say what you will about "freedom of speech", it's just plain stupid to alienate half or so of your customers or potential customers. Sure, maybe if you're actually doing something worthwhile for a cause, you can afford to say "this is what I believe and if it bothers you shop somewhere else." But to post what is basically trash-talk? Way past stupid, and they deserve all the abuse/boycott/figurative rocks they get.

How to screw up your business and become a national kickball in two days...

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ry ... orge-floyd
Hours before he posted a controversial tweet on Saturday night that has sparked backlash against his company, Greg Glassman, CrossFit's CEO and founder, told gym owners on a private Zoom call, “We're not mourning for George Floyd — I don't think me or any of my staff are,” according to a full recording of the meeting obtained by BuzzFeed News.

“Can you tell me why I should mourn for him? Other than that it’s the white thing to do — other than that, give me another reason,” he asked a Minneapolis gym owner who had questioned why the brand hadn’t posted a statement about the protests across the country after the death of George Floyd.

On Tuesday night, shortly after publication of this story, the company released a statement from Glassman saying that he had "decided to retire" and was stepping down as CEO.

"On Saturday I created a rift in the CrossFit community and unintentionally hurt many of its members," Glassman said. "I cannot let my behavior stand in the way of HQ’s or affiliates’ missions. They are too important to jeopardize."

Sheesh, they didn't have to mourn George Floyd. A generic statement about being against racism and for LEO accountability and Glassman would still have a job and CrossFit's rep wouldn't have taken a hit.

Now, their homepage has links to both Greg Glassman Retires and Why Didn’t CrossFit Just Say Something?
