I was thinking about how slaves would be tied to the whipping post and whipped for minor transgressions or just for the hell of it and how that doesn't equate with a white boy complaining about his woman and his new car.Vrede too wrote: ↑Thu Jun 11, 2020 7:05 pmneoplacebo wrote: ↑Thu Jun 11, 2020 4:09 pmI wonder if the Allman Brothers song "Whipping Post" will now be a victim.

Thanks. It's cool for anyone to sing the blues, but I wonder if John Belushi's samurai would be considered offensive these days.
My bad. I got the slavery allusion, but you're correct that the Allmans' woes don't approach it. I doubt that it will be censored since it's not as overtly racist as "Lady Antebellum", but it probably would not be written or accepted today.neoplacebo wrote: ↑Fri Jun 12, 2020 3:15 amI was thinking about how slaves would be tied to the whipping post and whipped for minor transgressions or just for the hell of it and how that doesn't equate with a white boy complaining about his woman and his new car.

Nothing to feel bad about; we just looked at it in different ways. Besides, the whipping post was a sanctioned form of legal punishment in the US for quite some time. It wasn't just slaves who were tied to it.Vrede too wrote: ↑Fri Jun 12, 2020 1:54 pmThanks. It's unconfirmed whether this also signals a shift to playing psychedelic music and hip hop.
duh, "we named our band after the Southern ‘antebellum’ style home where we took our first photos,” the statement adds. “As musicians, it reminded us of all the music born in the South that influenced us… Southern rock, blues, R&B, gospel and of course country. But we are regretful and embarrassed to say that we did not take into account the associations that weigh down this word" with actual meaning using other words and stuff like that

duh, how could we have known that we were stealing someone else's name, but it's not like she was using it as an abbreviation for the plantation word we didn't know about being a plantation word when we named ourselves, we were just looking for nostalgia, a back to the good old days, if you will.
Whatever, it's ours now.

It's a metaphor for America - going from enslaving blacks to just stealing from them.... according to Seattle’s Lady A, neither the band nor any members of their team reached out to her before making the change.
This Lady A — a 61-year-old black woman whose real name is Anita White — has been playing the blues under the name for more than 20 years. She began singing as a gospel performer at church and started going by Lady A for karaoke nights in the Eighties. She’s released multiple albums with the name, and on top of her day job working with Seattle Public Utilities, she’s gearing up to release another album, Lady A: Live in New Orleans, on her birthday on July 18th.
White tells Rolling Stone she’s frustrated that Lady Antebellum hadn’t gone to her before making a decision, pointing out the irony in changing a name in support of racial equality while simultaneously taking another one from a black performer. “This is my life. Lady A is my brand, I’ve used it for over 20 years, and I’m proud of what I’ve done,” she says, her voice breaking. “This is too much right now. They’re using the name because of a Black Lives Matter incident that, for them, is just a moment in time. If it mattered, it would have mattered to them before. It shouldn’t have taken George Floyd to die for them to realize that their name had a slave reference to it.
“It’s an opportunity for them to pretend they’re not racist or pretend this means something to them,” she adds. “If it did, they would’ve done some research. And I’m not happy about that. You found me on Spotify easily — why couldn’t they?” ...

Lady A(nti-bellum) offers to allow the original Lady A to use her name - because, why can't we all just be friends

I don't know who runs the business/legal part of the band formerly known as Lady Antebellum, but generally somebody would do a trademark/copyright search before going public with a name. Of course, maybe the band members just did it themselves without thinking, since "Lady A" is in fact their nickname among fans. I'm guessing some money will be thrown, some mumblings will be made, and everybody goes back to their business (or sorta-business, as in the case of Seattle lady).

Well this is interesting. "Lady A" is found only once in the trademark database, and is for a cosmetics line owned by Alexandra Dunhill Limited limited liability company UNITED KINGDOM 5th floor 11 Leadenhall Street London UNITED KINGDOM EC3V1LP.

Re: The Music Thread
Could be that the real Lady A never trademarked. If so, her bad, but it's still rude to take her name. Hopefully, it won't get nasty and she'll be able to comfortably retire from Seattle Public Utilities early. Trademark or not, the band probably doesn't want to look like villains.

I don't know much of anything about copyright/trademark law, but I think her regular use of the name "Lady A" on her work and in her performances would give a sort of "common law" right to the name. Ironically, since it is her actual name and not something created for her act, it may weaken that argument. But I'd agree, it wouldn't be in anybody's interest to get into a public legal fight over it.Vrede too wrote: ↑Sat Jun 13, 2020 1:14 amCould be that the real Lady A never trademarked. But so true about the influence on music. almost all our music has black roots (except polka - that's weird stuff)

Not sure of the details, but I damn sure nailed the tone.

"Today, we connected privately with the artist Lady A. Transparent, honest, and authentic conversations were had,"
Everything is cool
https://www.newsday.com/entertainment/m ... 1.45795425
"Lady A says an agreement announced between herself and the country-music trio Lady A, formerly Lady Antebellum, was premature and a breach of good faith.
"I received a draft agreement from the Antebellum camp," Seattle-based blues/gospel singer Anita White, 61, told Newsday in an email Tuesday. "I'm not happy about [it] yet again after talking in good faith. … Their camp is trying to erase me'"
Or not

Bering Strait
I saw them in a summer concert, not the one in the vid, but I think during the same summer tour. Russian group of fantastic musicians. All classically trained, but having a great time in their band. At least until they weren't. Lead singer Natasha's father was a physicist who died from Chernobyl.
Also, Natasha does a great job on "Jagged Edge of a Broken Heart"

Re: The Music Thread
So here's one that probably should be posted under the "guilty" or "embarrassing" music thread, but I've got my reasons in the form of fond memories of long summer days enjoying Indian Lake in Denville, NJ with "my little one." We "swam in the cove" "got a snack in the grove", paddled a canoe, and baked in the sun.
So I guess they'd have to change this one too, since there are "woo-woos" in the song and other Indian references, but "my" Indian Lake is still there, with all the streets around it named for Indian tribes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Lake_(New_Jersey)

I'd check in with the local Indians, but I don't see anything particularly offensive about the lake name or the song. However, I would ban The Cowsills on general principle - no offense to your family memories.
