2020 Elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

It's truly incredible that 40ish percent of the people still approve of him. No wonder the US is so mucked up.
It's deplorable.

If He Loses, Trump Must Resign Immediately and Make Biden President. No, Really.

... With the pandemic still afoot and the economy a mess, there would be no time to waste at this critical juncture. But since the line of succession is different today, how could President-Elect Biden become President Biden before Jan. 20?

Here’s how. Under the 25th Amendment, ratified and passed in 1967, a president can appoint a vice president in the event of a vacancy in the office, with the consent of the House and the Senate by simple majorities in each chamber. In this case, Trump would ask Pence to resign, appoint Biden as his VP, and then resign himself, allowing Biden to succeed to the presidency.

A final hurdle would be the Republican-controlled Senate, which has been Trump’s lapdog under Mitch McConnell. But clearly if Trump actually did his duty and resigned, it seems improbable that the Senate would stand in the way.

Of course, it is impossible to conceive of Donald Trump resigning, even with a widening crisis unfolding all around him. Then again, Richard Nixon was no quitter, as he acknowledged when he resigned. So who knows? Trump likes to sulk and feel sorry for himself—so he could say “to heck with you” if he is humiliated at the polls....
Not very likely, but great prediction if it does happen. A slight modification would be that PINO just resigns, then VP Q-tip says, "Screw this lame duck BS," appoints Biden as his VP and then resigns.

Dog walk thought.

Does anyone find it deliciously ironic that if Cheetohead had listened to science his political future would be a lot brighter?

He certainly won't take responsibility for that but its really all on him.

Yeah, it sucks that your 2:1 vote has been watered down. They usually don't explain when allowing a lower court ruling to stand. The written dissent by 3 justices - Sonia Sotomayor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan - is a little unusual.

Let's also give credit to:
"the GOP-led Florida Legislature"
Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis
"Secretary of State Laurel Lee, also a Republican"
The Eleventh Circuit

"The appellate court set a hearing for the case on August 18 -- the same day as Florida's primary elections."

Apparently, it's unlikely to rule one way or the other by Nov 3.

"The unsigned order likely means the law will be in effect for the November election, although the court did not declare the law to be unconstitutional or limit ongoing court challenges."

Dems should quickly GoFundMe the outstanding fines and fees.

Dunno if it means anything or not, but right-wing-trumper-loon Cathy McMorris Rogers, whose congressional district covers a fair chunk of eastern Washington has been running ads where she portrays herself as a very reasonable person, interested in veterans affairs, etc. and with no mention whatsoever of Trump or any real issue of current importance.

She won a few terms ago with 65%, then 60%, then 55% and in the last election had to scrap hard in a primary.

Let us know what happened in Nov, please.

Challenger Jamaal Bowman has defeated longtime Rep. Eliot Engel in the Democratic primary for New York's 16th Congressional District (56-40), The Associated Press projects.

The victory by the education advocate and former middle school principal is a win for New York's progressive movement, coming two years after Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez topped another longtime Democrat in a neighboring district. And Bowman's victory reflects a surge in support in recent weeks for some younger, more diverse progressive candidates....

Engel currently serves as chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and has held the seat for 31 years.

Both candidates received high-profile endorsements that split over ideological lines within the Democratic Party.

Bowman gained support from progressive leaders including Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, along with Ocasio-Cortez. Engel was endorsed by Hillary Clinton, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, along with the Congressional Black Caucus....

The DNC has now officially been moved entirely online. All delegates and even congresspersons have been told to not make flight reservations. I wonder if the sacrifice will help Dems in WI or if the money loss will hurt them.

Surging Democrats expand Senate targets to GOP states

It's come to this for Republicans straining to defend their Senate majority in November's elections: They're air-dropping millions of dollars into races in Alabama, Kentucky and other red states where Donald Trump coasted during his 2016 presidential election triumph....

And while it's early and well-known senators can differentiate themselves from an unpopular president atop their ticket, Democrats are defending just 12 Senate seats this November to Republicans' 23. The GOP controls the Senate 53-47....

Democrats have at least a puncher’s chance of grabbing Republican-held seats in four states Trump won by double digits: Alaska, Kansas, Kentucky and South Carolina. They have an even shot at ousting GOP Sen. Steve Daines in Montana, which Trump carried by 20 percentage points, and long-shot hopes of retaining their most endangered senator, Doug Jones of Alabama, where Trump won by 28 points.

Republican incumbents face legitimate challenges for two Senate seats in Georgia and difficult fights in Arizona and North Carolina, all where Trump won narrowly. In two states Trump won by 9 points, Iowa GOP Sen. Joni Ernst faces a tough Democratic opponent in businesswoman Theresa Greenfield, while Republican Sen. John Cornyn is on alert against a Texas upset....

Although dollars don't always translate into votes, campaign reports filed this week show surging Democratic fundraising in solidly Republican terrain.

Jones' $18 million haul in Alabama more than quadruples the amount raised by his Republican opponent, Tommy Tuberville, a former Auburn football coach. That's prompted One Nation, a group allied with McConnell, to line up $3.2 million on ads helping Tuberville, with the conservative Club for Growth planning $1.3 million more....

The two McConnell-friendly groups are even aiming $15 million at Kentucky to help him fend off an uphill challenge from Democrat Amy McGrath. The $47 million she has raised so far, aided by Democratic contributors' antipathy to McConnell's work with Trump, is tops in the country and surpasses McConnell's $38 million.

Even in Kansas, which hasn't elected a Democratic senator since before World War II, a group with ties to state and national Republicans plans to spend $3 million to prevent the polarizing Kris Kobach from winning the party's Senate nomination. Top Republicans fear a Kobach nomination could mean victory for Democrat Barbara Bollier, who's collected more cash than the three GOP contenders combined.

The two McConnell-allied groups are preparing to spend $22 million to help GOP Sen. David Perdue against Democrat Ossoff in Georgia, where Republican advantages among suburban voters have eroded. An expensive battle is brewing over Ernst's Iowa seat, with outside Democratic and GOP groups each planning to spend over $20 million.

Other robust Democratic fundraisers include Mark Kelly in Arizona and Jaime Harrison in South Carolina. Kelly has a solid chance of defeating GOP Sen. Martha McSally while Harrison is waging an unlikely drive to oust Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, a close Trump ally....

Republicans are eyeing Alaska, where GOP Sen. Dan Sullivan's likely opponent is Al Gross, an independent with Democratic support. The sprawling state is difficult to poll and populated by notoriously free-spirited voters, and Gross, a doctor, has already spent $700,000 of his own money on his campaign.

Scott Kendall, a Republican consultant, predicted Sullivan will win. But, he cautioned, 2020 is “the weirdest year any of us have seen.”

Fingers crossed, democrats have historically been able to grab defeat from the jaws of victory. Just keep doing what they're doing and let the pubs defeat themselves.

I'm pretty sure Sarah could report "scientists have proven the earth to be flat and currently populated with dinosaurs" and keep a straight face.

Even if one believed her evaluation of Trump's inner workings, it's bad advice for him to say "I'm doing everything I can" when he should be detailing what he's doing and what the plan is. As if.
Funny, I was just listening earlier to what I assume is a "major" Biden speech that included a detailed plan to help struggling people. His empathy and compassion came through loud and clear without patting himself on the back.

Scaramucci: 'Biden is actually more of a Republican than President Trump'

That may be true, Anthony, but I’m not sure that it’s helpful to Biden to say it out loud.

'Tossup in Texas': Biden leads Trump by one point in Lone Star State, according to new poll

I won't predict or even hope for a Biden win in Texas, but if it's still in play in October Biden is POTUS.

Looking like there's not going to much of a convention in Jacksonville either.

Meanwhile, the Dems will smoothly do what they've been planning for two months now. If he wins, Biden will owe Gov Cooper, the state health director and the Charlotte mayor bigly.
