Another Special Ops Mission Accomplished

I saw a news report today about a joint US and Afghan special operations force that rescued an American civilian medical doctor from Taliban in a remote area of Afghanistan; one of the operators was wounded and later died of his wounds. The doctor had been held, they say, since Wednesday, and they had reason to think he was going to be murdered, so they went in for him. Hoorah for our guys.

That was pretty offensive. Regardless of what bad political decisions got him there, he rose to the occasion as a hero. It wasn't his fault the US has pursued futility for over 10 years. At least he died doing something worthwhile, and didn't get killed just patrolling a vacant road.

I agree. He helped rescue a volunteer MD for a secular aid group, exactly the kind of help we should be giving the Afghan people instead of this endless and fruitless war. I'm cool with SEAL Team 6 and the rest of the services being the good guys rather the bad guys.

bill makes a point. I'm not sure where I stand, this war was too easily identified as a war for oil, by oil, with the help of those who refused to see that it had nothing to do with anything else.

but without the draft and with the war as the best employment for many, no one objected or at least not loud enough and what happened here, is what happened

special ops are good at what they do and what they do can be vicious and sometimes they die. is that worse than the 100,000 or so Iraqi and Afghan women, children and old people who have died, or is it worse than the Afghan men fighting for what they see as their freedom


a lot of young people were confused when the republicons pushed to end the draft, we had never known the republicons to do anything right and it felt strange having them on our side, until years later when it became apparent that this new army of mercenaries could be used to fight the worse sort of war and do things a typical draftee would never consider doing
