Re: In Memoriam

John Lewis Bridge ProjectMore than 398,000 people have now signed a petition to rename the Edmund Pettus Bridge after late civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis
... According to Smithsonian Magazine, Pettus was considered a respected figure in Alabama during his time, serving as both a lawyer and a US senator. His history, however, is clouded by his position as both a decorated Confederate general and a leader of the Alabama chapter of the Ku Klux Klan, according to Smithsonian.
The bridge, which sits atop the Alabama River, was named after Pettus in 1940 — three decades after he died, the magazine reported.
"The bridge was named for him, in part, to memorialize his history, of restraining and imprisoning African-Americans in their quest for freedom after the Civil War," University of Alabama history professor John Giggie told Smithsonian....
Rename the Edmund Pettus Bridge after Rep John Lewis
449,638 have signed.

Re: In Memoriam
Irony.Sens. Marco Rubio, Dan Sullivan confuse John Lewis and Elijah Cummings in remembrance photos
Sens. Marco Rubio and Dan Sullivan took heat Saturday for mixing up Rep. John Lewis and Rep. Elijah Cummings in tributes to Lewis....
The picture attached to the tweet, however, was of Cummings, who died in October last year.
Sullivan’s initial Facebook tribute to Lewis featured a photo of Sullivan, R-Alaska, and Cummings at the opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture....
Ouch.... Rubio had also changed his Twitter profile picture to the image of him and Cummings, but after criticism on social media, changed the picture to one of him and Lewis....
"Wrong black guy," wrote 60 Minutes' "60 in 6" correspondent Wesley Lowery.
"This is beyond parody," wrote Jessy Han....
Daily Kos communications director Carolyn Fiddler posted a picture of Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., writing in jest, "What an honor to know Marco Rubio."

Re: In Memoriam
Virginia high school named for Robert E. Lee to be renamed in honor of Rep. John Lewis
... In late June, the Fairfax County School Board voted to change the school's name so it was no longer honoring the Confederate general. The board spent the last several weeks trying to come up with a new name, and decided to pay tribute to Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), following his death last Friday at the age of 80 from cancer....

John Lewis: Good Trouble
Reviewed by kevin evans on June 30, 2020
Civil rights activist and Congressman John Lewis' unwavering pursuit of democracy is on full display in this moving but hagiographic bio-doc.
( I had to look it up.
"A hagiography (/ˌhæɡiˈɒɡrəfi/; from Ancient Greek ἅγιος, hagios, meaning 'holy', and -γραφία, -graphia, meaning 'writing') is a biography of a saint or an ecclesiastical leader, and by extension, an adulatory and idealized biography of a founder, saint, monk, nun or icon in any of the world's religions." ... )
Score: 4/5 stars
Genre: Documentary
Director: Dawn Porter
Starring: John Lewis, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Elijah Cummings
Rated: PG
In the documentary John Lewis: Good Trouble, the eponymous civil rights leader and legislator is mostly depicted in the light of saintly knight or steward.
I suppose if one were to critique such a depiction in and of itself, a “dirt devil” would seek a little more dust in the creases and upon the wings — but I find director Dawn Porter’s portrayal to be refreshingly delightful even during some of the film’s tense and difficult moments.
The execution of this hagiographic documentary seems to deliberately, directly and subconsciously suggest a brighter/larger message of moral fortitude.
Via a newspaper-clipping, era-hopping style, scenes throughout Lewis’ 80 years merge to lend even more power and validity to society’s call for change and progress — though viewers may feel a little lost in time due to the juxtapositions throughout different decades as Porter builds her overall emotional flow of joy, sorrow and fear.
In typical documentary fashion, we’re exposed to everything from still frames, wavy B&W video, technicolor and modern-day, crystal-clear HD footage.
In effect, viewers feel as if they’ve actually traveled a fair distance — not only because we move through a significant chunk of 20th- and 21st-century history, but because Lewis himself travels, constantly coming or going, meeting and speaking. And that’s merely in his present-day adventures as a politician, years after traveling from Selma, Ala., to the march on Washington to the lunch counter sit-ins, as well as many more perilous demonstrations.
Although Good Trouble doesn’t omit tragedy and heartache, it most certainly does not deprive the audience of love and optimism. At times, some of the political aspects may drag on for anyone who may not be the biggest fan of Washington politics and procedures in general, but this fundamental aspect that’s all but necessary in a bio-doc about John Lewis by no means detracts from its overall uplifting nature.
As such, Porter has gently and sternly presented a humble, brilliant and steadfast man of peace who always seems to be shamelessly in the act of wearing his heart on his sleeve.

Donald Trump's latest tweets!
It's ALWAYS about PINO.One of the greats in the history of television, Regis Philbin has passed on to even greater airwaves, at 88. He was a fantastic person, and my friend. He kept telling me to run for President. Holds the record for “most live television”, and he did it well. Regis, we love you....
"greater airwaves"? :confusion-scratchheadblue:

Philbin was not my favorite celeb, but my post was only about panning PINO. We don't even know if Philbin really said that or whether it was tongue-in-cheek if he did. However, Wiki does say they were close friends. That looks worse in hindsight than it probably did at the time.

Someone at the Troy service pointed out that he's being escorted around AL by state troopers, including to Selma and the Bridge. Irony.

Given the inbreeding prevalent at most police and fire units, probably some of those guys' fathers beat up on the marchers on their original bridge trip.

Yeah, and I bet a lot of those second generation ones hold the same racist views their parents held sixty years ago. They just have to be a little more circumspect these days.O Really wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 11:22 pmGiven the inbreeding prevalent at most police and fire units, probably some of those guys' fathers beat up on the marchers on their original bridge trip.

Yep, including killing unarmed blacks. It must suck for them to escort John Lewis, haha.neoplacebo wrote: ↑Sun Jul 26, 2020 6:49 amYeah, and I bet a lot of those second generation ones hold the same racist views their parents held sixty years ago. Maybe some of their grandfathers did the beating, too. There may even be a few whose family members were beaten on the bridge, though NOT becoming a state trooper is more likely in those families.

Body of John Lewis makes final Selma bridge crossing
Saluting Alabama state troopers, including some African American ones, at 0:20 seconds.
Full crossing, 9:37.The wagon rolled over a carpet of rose petals, pausing atop the bridge over the Alabama River in the summer heat so family members could walk behind it. On the south side of the bridge, where Lewis was beaten by Alabama state troopers in 1965, family members placed red roses that the carriage rolled over, marking the spot where Lewis spilled his blood and suffered a head injury.
