The Cinema Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

My 1st movie was at a drive-in. I have no idea why my parents took 5, 7 and 9 year olds to see Ben Hur. Maybe the religion outweighed the violence.
I loved the excitement.

The Post (2017)

   for Spielberg, the actors and the movie.

:-|| :-|| :-|| for the real life people, including at the NYT, and especially Daniel Ellsberg.

Democracy needs heroes, and all who fought in Vietnam deserved them.

FXM. It'll probably run again over the next month or two or more.

Ok movie, not great. It's sort of felt flat and uninspired.

Ready Player One

Ready Player One is a 2018 American science fiction adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by Zak Penn and Ernest Cline based on Cline's 2011 novel of the same name. It stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance. It takes place in 2045, when much of humanity uses the virtual reality software OASIS (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation) to escape the desolation of the real world. Orphaned teenager Wade Watts (Sheridan) finds clues to a hidden game that promises OASIS's ownership to the winner, and he and four allies try to complete it before a corporation run by businessman Nolan Sorrento (Mendelsohn) can do so....
I thought it might be cheesy, not really my genre, and I thought I might bag it after 20 minutes, but really good IMO - plot, characters, acting, pacing and definitely FX.

Hidden Figures

Excellent acting all around. I liked the casting of perennial sweet girl Kirsten Dunst as a (mostly) racist bitch.

Annihilation (2018)

Annihilation is a 2018 science fiction horror film written and directed by Alex Garland, based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer. It stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac. The story follows a group of scientists who enter "The Shimmer", a mysterious quarantined zone of mutating plants and animals caused by an alien presence....
It won't be for everyone, but I thought it was gripping, thought-provoking and amazing. Natalie Portman is a global treasure. I didn't recognize Jennifer Jason Leigh and Gina Rodriguez until looking up the cast, but they were also great.

Ant-Man

I'm not much of a Marvel superhero fan, but this one has a strong cast and is a cut above the others I've seen.
Surprise, the sequel does not disappoint.

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Good plot, action, humor and effects. Nothing wrong with watching 60 year old Michelle Pfeiffer, 43 year old Judy Greer or 39 year old Evangeline Lilly, either - all still beautiful - not to mention Hannah John-Kamen. The guys are topnotch, too.

Saw an ad for this new movie "Judas and the Black Messiah," about Fred Hampton and the Chicago Black Panther Party of the 60's. Looks like it'll be pretty intense. Hampton was murdered in his bed by cops.
