Man walks into a bar in Mississippi and orders two hurricanes and a Corona. Bartender says, that'll be $20.20.

Given the fizzle, they're now calling the first storm "Little Marco".

Hurricane Laura will now be a Cat 3 before smacking the TX-LA border early on the RNC's final day.
Typhoon Bavi will hit North Korea (rare, I think) as a Cat 2 on Wed evening.

Laura's a Cat 4 now! Yikes. God really hates the RNC.
There are also 3! storms in the Eastern Pacific, at least 2 coming close to Baja.

The area of 74+ mph winds is only about 150 miles wide. I can't find anything about the size of the cat 2, 3 or 4 winds.

I'll go with the surge. But I'll go with the NHC's assessment of wind speed over your evaluation of a satellite map.
Are you saying that they are wrong?

Possible cat 5 is insane. The path runs through oil refineries and chemical plants, but of course we know those are well protected against leakage, spills, explosions and fire. It's unimaginable that these facilities would never be built in such a way as to endanger the public.
Right?

An astronaut on the space station captured dramatic photos of Hurricane Laura barreling towards Louisiana and Texas
...
... Hurricane Laura is the 13th named storm in this year's Atlantic hurricane season, which the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasted to be "extremely active."
And indeed it is. Storms are named in alphabetical order based on when they form, and nearly every named storm this year has been the earliest on record with that starting letter. For instance, a typical "I" storm forms around October 4. But this year, Tropical Storm Isaias (which became a hurricane) came more than two months before that, on July 29.
The National Hurricane Center doesn't even offer an average date for storms whose names start with "L" because they so rarely occur at all.
A typical season has about 12 named storms, six of which become hurricanes.
In addition to the 13 named storms that have already formed, NOAA has predicted the season will see six to 12 additional named storms before it comes to an end in November. If the season winds up at the upper edge of that forecast, with 25 named storms, it would be eclipsed only by the 2005 season, which had 27.
Climate change is making hurricanes stronger and more frequent
Hurricanes are increasing in intensity due to climate change, and they are expected to grow even stronger and more frequent as the planet continues to warm.
Because hurricanes use warm water as fuel, they have more to feed on as ocean temperatures rise. Research from NOAA shows that each new decade over the last 40 years has brought an 8% increase in the chance that a storm turns into a major hurricane.
Climate change is also making storms slower and wetter: Over the past 70 years, the speed of hurricanes and tropical storms has slowed about 10% on average, according to a 2018 study. Slower hurricanes, like Dorian last year, linger longer over the same area, causing greater damage.
It remains a Cat 1 nine hours after landfall.

Trump Looted $44 Billion FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund in the Middle of a Record-Setting Hurricane Season
... If those predictions bear out, Laura could be one of the most destructive Gulf hurricanes on record. It’s particularly bad timing considering that, less than three weeks ago, instead of working with Congress to craft comprehensive legislation to address the ongoing crisis and deliver desperately-needed aid, President Trump looted FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund to the tune of $44 billion — authorizing the agency to pay for a $300 per week supplement to regular unemployment benefits.
I wonder if it would be clearer if we say: The $300 a week benefit supplement is similar to the $600 one that was included in the CARES Act passed at the start of the pandemic. An extension of that $600 benefit was included in second relief package that the House has already approved, but that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell won’t hold a vote on. because the Senate won’t sign off on the House bill and Trump didn’t work with lawmakers to reach a compromise, the unemployment supplement isn’t coming from money appropriated by Congress. It’s coming from the government account meant to cover natural disasters like the one presently bearing down on Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas....

We had a cat 1 in Auburn in 75. Completely unexpected. While in the eye, the group I was with argued about the storm being over or if we were in the eye.

Laura is still a TD and will remains so as it hits DC. I wonder how often that's happened for a Gulf storm. We're getting some mildish weather from it, may peak tonight.
https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/ ... sion-laura
It will then become a TS again in the Atlantic.
Can you imagine being a North Atlantic captain?
We should change course, there's a hurricane in the Gulf.
Los Cabos are being hit by a TD right now, with a weird little zigzag predicted.
https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/ ... one-hernan
Might get a lot of rain.
Tropical Storm Maysak is aiming to hit South Korea as a Cat 2, the second Korean hurricane in a week.
