The Music Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Bill Withers died some time ago but was memorialized by Mathis this weekend.

"In the virtual ceremony, Withers, who died in March at age 81, was honored posthumously with the "Lone Sailor" award. Mattis"

At a memorial event this weekend, former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis paid tribute to singer, songwriter, and former sailor Bill Withers.
In recorded remarks, Mattis spoke about the lasting impact of Withers' music for the current generation in an era marked by turmoil.

"In his tribute to Withers, Mattis never mentioned Trump, but instead quoted from Ralph Waldo Emerson: "Great men, great nations, have not been boasters and buffoons but perceivers of the terror of life and have manned themselves to face it."

"'I wish that I had served alongside Bill Withers, because the manhood he demonstrated was not the childish egocentric example we see too often in today's news cycles," Mattis said"

Trump: “We had the safest border in the history of our country - or at least recorded history. I guess maybe a thousand years ago it was even better.”

So I've never found any reason to have much of an opinion on Miley Cyrus. I can name only one of her songs, "Wrecking Ball", and think I've only seen her perform once - when she was humping some guy at Super Bowl. I wouldn't, off the cuff, think I'd like her very much. So when the random music server gave me Miley doing "Wish You Were Here" I was shocked, aghast, and piled abuse on the idiot algorithm that thought I'd like it. So imagine my further shock when I found she actually did a pretty good job (below).

Then it turns out she's done a good job with Blondie's "Heart of Glass" and Dolly Parton's "Jolene", Joan Jett's "I Love Rock and Roll", as well as Paul Simon "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover."

Learn something new everyday, I guess, if you make an effort.

She's definitely uhhhh, different. But she does have talent. Really liked this song from SNL last Christmas, regardless of the copious amounts of two sided tape.

Miley Cyrus Is Bringing A Stripped-Down Unplugged Set To Her Backyard
'MTV Unplugged Presents Miley Cyrus Backyard Sessions' hits MTV on Friday, October 16

Throughout 2020, with the live-music industry effectively shut down, artists have taken to livestreaming, recording remotely, and when possible, pumping out show-stopping performances right from home. In Miley Cyrus's case, just over a month after hitting the 2020 VMAs with a glamorous, self-referential rendition of new single "Midnight Sky," she's heading to the backyard for something very special.

Both glam and au naturale, in a glitzy dress and under a canopy of trees, Cyrus is set to rock the proverbial house for MTV Unplugged Presents Miley Cyrus Backyard Sessions, a new special set to hit MTV on Friday, October 16 at 7/6c. It'll be an "unplugged" and "stripped back" show, finding her delivering "Midnight Sky" as well as her biggest hits and some select covers.

Taking the stage from just outside of her own home in Los Angeles, Cyrus will channel the connective spirit of the MTV Unplugged series as she also tackles some big covers, including Britney Spears's "Gimme More" and songs from Pearl Jam, The Cardigans, and more. Miley previously performed a beloved MTV Unplugged set in 2014, centered around her Bangerz era, that also featured a noteworthy medley done side-by-side with Madonna.

The latest show is in keeping with the MTV Unplugged at Home series launched this past spring alongside the #AloneTogether campaign, in an effort to keep people connected even during a time of necessarily isolation.

MTV Unplugged Presents Miley Cyrus Backyard Sessions hits MTV on Friday, October 16 at 7/6c.
1/2 hour, I wish it was going to be longer. Good deal that Fri eve programming is usually crap, but I'll bet there will be streaming and plenty of reruns anyhow.

Demi Lovato - Commander In Chief
Billboard Music Awards 10/14/2020, world premier.

Official music video:

Demi Lovato - Commander In Chief
Lyrics

... Commander in Chief, honestly
If I did the things you do, I couldn't sleep
Seriously, do you even know the truth?
We're in a state of crisis, people are dying
While you line your pockets deep
Commander in Chief
How does it feel to still be able to breathe?

Breathe
Be able to breathe

Won't give up, stand our ground
We'll be in the streets while you're bunkering down
Won't give up, stand our ground
We'll be in the streets while you're…
Demi Lovato Responds to Fan Who's 'Ashamed To Be a Lovatic' After 'Commander In Chief' Release

... “The difference between me and the type of artist you WANT and EXPECT me to be, (but I’m sorry honey that will ever BE me 😂) I literally don’t care if this ruins my career. This isn’t about that. My career isn’t about that. I made a piece of art that stands for something I believe in. And I’m putting it out even at the risk of losing fans.”

“As much as I would like to be sad that I disappointed you, I’m too busy being bummed that you expect me, a queer Hispanic woman, to silence my views/beliefs in order to please my audience...."

Last night:
‘John Lennon: His Life, Legacy, Last Days’: Release date, plot, cast and all you need to know about ABC 20/20 special show
The special episode will shed light on the late singer’s life, final days and lasting legacy through the eyes of close friends and colleagues

One of the most iconic figures in the history of music, John Lennon, who was gunned down almost 40 years ago outside his West 72nd Street home in New York at the age of 40, is now getting a special themed episode from the ABC network. The two-hour-special episode titled ‘John Lennon: His Life, Legacy, Last Days’ will be broadcast on ABC 20/20 and will act as the network’s 43rd season opener....
Excellent production, made me cry more than once. Be sure to stream it or catch a rerun.

So by the luck of the draw, I rediscovered Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, when "Neverending Song of Love" popped up. Upon further digging, I found the long clip below, in concert. If you're not familiar with Delaney and Bonnie, their "Friends" band members at different times included Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, George Harrison, Leon Russell, Bobby Whitlock, Dave Mason, Rita Coolidge, King Curtis, and Eric Clapton. More background here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delaney_%26_Bonnie.

If Bonnie's stage movement look familiar, it might be because she was the first white dancer for Tina Turner.
