Single hurricane thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

110 mph

Saving grace - I've never seen one move 24 mph. You get so much damage from being stuck in a stationary or one moving below 5 mph. It just lasts and lasts.

Good luck N.O.

Been getting drizzle here most of the day. Now pretty steady rain but no wind. Tomorrow to be hefty rain and wind they say.

I'm not sure if Saudel hit the Philippines prior to central Vietnam.
Molave did hit the Philippines as a Cat 1 prior to central Vietnam as a Cat 1 right now.
Tropical Storm Goni will hit the Philippines as a Cat 1 to 3. :(

Vrede are you battoning down the hatches?

Supposed to be at tropical storm strength and go right down Main Street.

In Flat Rock I could always count on the power being out for five days after one of these.

Oh, the cutesy tourist shop tragedy!

In Flat Rock I could always count on the power being out for five days after one of these.
I've got plenty of food, camp stoves, candles and batteries, it's not cold enough to turn on the heat yet, and I'm always prepped for ice storm damage. I will charge the cell phone, though. If I'm out of touch it's just because the laptop battery died and I don't feel like doing the forum on a small screen. Thanks.

You're in a condo? No generator for you. About a year after I moved into my house we were hit with Opal. I thought no biggie, we've got camping gear etc. Forgot about the well, no water.
Opps.
Bought a generator after that one.

Yep.

No generator for you.

Correct.

About a year after I moved into my house we were hit with Opal. I thought no biggie, we've got camping gear etc. Forgot about the well, no water.

I always keep some full gallon jugs and 5 gallon buckets.

30 years in the northern Rockies and I never needed one, nor to go to a shelter. I'll probably never shake being over-prepped. I should go gas up the cars just in case I need to escape to a distant motel after a few days.

Already raining hard here. Looks like billy.pilgrim MAY have lucked out with the worst staying north of the eye rather than the usual east.

Light rain was all we got.

I wonder about the storm surge. The media dramatics do get a little crazy.
The ones that come straight in, like this one, have bigger surges.
I had always thought that the slower ones pick up more surge, but maybe not. I've never seen one move all the way across the Gulf this fast - 24 mph.

Was pouring, local creek flooded, just light rain now.
Winds intermittently strong, but not crazy.
Still have power.
Should be completely over in a couple of hours.

Tropical Depression Atsani has shifted south, may now hit northern Luzon as a Cat 2.

Eta Intensifies Into One of Most Intense November Hurricanes on Record Ahead of Catastrophic Central America Hit

Hurricane Eta has intensified into one of the most intense November hurricanes on record in the Atlantic Basin and is expected to bring devastating winds and storm surge to the coast of Nicaragua, as well as potentially catastrophic, life-threatening flooding rainfall that will last for days in much of Central America.

Eta is the 28th storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, which ties the 2005 season for the most storms on record. It's also the 12th hurricane of the season, which ties for the second-most on record for a year in the Atlantic.

Eta is also only the fifth Atlantic Category 4 or higher hurricane to occur in November. Paloma in 2008 was the last November Category 4 hurricane in the Atlantic. It is also climbing the list of most intense November hurricanes by wind speed....

Image

...

Image

... Here are where the heaviest rainfall totals are predicted by NHC in Central America:

-15 to 25 inches, with locally up to 35 inches in much of Nicaragua and Honduras

-10 to 20 inches, with locally up to 25 inches in eastern Guatemala and Belize

-10 to 15 inches, with locally up to 25 inches in Panama and Costa Rica

-5 to 10 inches, with locally up to 15 inches in southern areas of southeast Mexico

Parts of El Salvador, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands could also see heavy rainfall and flooding from Eta.

Northwest Caribbean Reformation Threat

Eta will track slowly across Central America through late this week, however, its long-term forecast beyond that time is highly uncertain.

One possible forecast scenario is that Eta will simply dissipate as it spreads heavy rainfall over Central America.

However, there is increasing computer model forecast guidance that shows Eta's spin and energy lingering over Central America for a time and then moving back over the northwestern Caribbean. That could lead to a reorganizing Eta or a new system forming over the northwest Caribbean by this weekend.

Beyond that, it is too soon to determine if, when and where this system may eventually track.

Check back to weather.com for updates over the next several days on this possibility and what it might mean for any other land areas in the long-term future. That could include Cuba, the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, Florida and the Gulf Coast....

Hurricane Eta gains historic strength, could reach Category 5 status when it hits Central America on Tuesday

Crap. I did relief work in Honduras after:
Hurricane Mitch

Hurricane Mitch is the second-deadliest Atlantic hurricane on record, causing over 11,000 fatalities in Central America in 1998, including approximately 7,000 in Honduras and 3,800 in Nicaragua due to catastrophic flooding from the slow motion of the storm. It was the deadliest hurricane in Central American history, surpassing Hurricane Fifi–Orlene, which killed slightly fewer people there in 1974.

The thirteenth named storm, ninth hurricane, and third major hurricane of the 1998 Atlantic hurricane season, Mitch formed in the western Caribbean Sea on October 22, and after drifting through extremely favorable conditions, it rapidly strengthened to peak at Category 5 status, the highest possible rating on the Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale....
Too much poverty to adequately prepare or cope.

Then, Hurricane Eta heads back into the Caribbean and restrengthens to at least a TS. Possibly Cuba, then?

Tropical Storm Goni is still on track towards Vietnam after killing at least 20 in the Philippines.

Looks like Tropical Storm Atsani will swing north of the Philippines, but then it will veer south and head for, you guessed it, Vietnam. Yikes.

Dozens Dead as Eta Triggers Catastrophic Flooding, Landslides in Central America

... n northwestern Honduras, officials on Thursday ordered residents in the Sula Valley, home to some of the country's largest cities, to evacuate immediately because of rising floodwaters from the Ulúa River, La Prensa reported.

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández asked civilian personnel and private corporations to help with evacuations by providing boats and helicopters, Tu Nota reported.

The river had reached a flood level of almost 52 feet near the city of Chinda in the province of Santa Bárbara, according to Francisco Argeñal, chief meteorologist for COPECO, the Honduran emergency management agency. That's more than 13 feet higher than the level recorded in 1998 when Hurricane Mitch killed more than 9,000 people in Central America....
