The country's longest-serving inmate for marijuana crimes will be released early, organization says

The man described as the longest-serving inmate for marijuana crimes in the country will be out of a South Florida prison before Christmas.

Richard DeLisi, sentenced to 90 years by a Polk County, Florida, judge after his conviction in 1989, will be released in December, 18 months ahead of his scheduled departure, The Last Prisoner Project announced Monday in a news release. The nonprofit, which advocates for inmates serving long sentences based on nonviolent, marijuana-related offenses, has been seeking DeLisi’s early liberation.

Advocates say DeLisi, a 71-year-old who is being held at South Bay Correctional Facility in Palm Beach County, is at high risk of death if he contracts COVID-19 because of various health problems.

This will be the first Christmas since 1988 that DeLisi doesn’t spend behind bars.

DeLisi and his older brother, Ted DeLisi, were convicted in 1989 of trafficking in cannabis, conspiracy to traffic in cannabis and a violation of the Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organization (RICO) Act. Judge Dennis Maloney sentenced both brothers to three consecutive 30-year sentences, well beyond the recommendations in judicial guidelines....



... A doctor who studied DeLisi’s case for The Last Prisoner Project said he has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, hypertension, diabetes, prostate problems, arthritis, degenerative disk disease and back problems and has sustained mini-strokes.

“It is my expert opinion, based on my education, training, certification, skills, and experience, that within a reasonable degree of certainty if Richard DeLisi is not released, he will contract COVID-19 in prison and within a reasonable probability die as a result,” Dr. Karen Gedney wrote in her report.

South Bay Correctional, a privately run prison operated by the GEO Group, has reported 421 positive tests for COVID-19 among inmates and 85 among staff members. Six inmate deaths had been attributed to the viral illness as of Tuesday afternoon.

Overall, the Florida Department of Health reports that 180 Florida prison inmates have died of COVID-19 complications....

“I am so excited to hug my children and grandchildren,” DeLisi said in the statement provided by his legal team. “I have missed so many important moments with them and I can't wait to get out there and create precious memories with everyone. I am so thrilled that this dark chapter of my life is finally over.”

DeLisi’s daughter, Ashley, was 3 years old when he went to prison.

“I just want to hug my dad outside of prison,” she said, according to the release from The Last Prisoner Project.

On the local news this morning, they say there's rumblings in VA about legalizing pot. VA is less than two miles from me. It gives me great nostalgia as well as mild angst over the prospect that my more than fifty years of being a criminal may soon come to an end. My only consolation in this is that here in TN pot will be legal when pigs fly and trump tells the truth. The local news story says the projected tax revenue for VA will be more than $300 million a year. I plan to do my part.

Yeah, I thought about that. People in TN have been going to VA for decades to buy cigarettes because the state tax on them there is quite a bit less than here. It's technically illegal to do that, but I never heard of anyone being charged with it.

Don't y'all still have about a dozen counties that forgo all revenue from alcohol because, well just because? Actually some of them because about 90 years ago when everyone was going wet Tennessee did too but by county. Counties simply had to vote but there was some sort of population requirement.
I saw a few years back that the state passed a special exemption for the county that has the Jack Daniel's distillery so they could give out taste tests. This county and several others can't go wet even if they wanted to because they don't have the required number of people to vote in the county.

All my time here has been in Sullivan County, which has sold alcohol since I was a kid. I don't doubt there's still dry counties in the state. That's their problem. Just last week Bristol, which is in Sullivan County, voted to turn the former mall there into a casino. As for the county that the Jack Daniels distillery is in being dry, I suppose that's the reason Jack Daniels exists in the first place.

The president of Honduras was supposed to be a drug war ally. U.S. prosecutors say he helped move cocaine

The United States has given Honduras hundreds of millions of dollars in security assistance in recent years to help the Central American country fight drug traffickers.

Yet this week, federal prosecutors in New York laid out fresh evidence suggesting that the nation's president himself helped traffic drugs. They say President Juan Orlando Hernández used his nation's armed forces to protect huge shipments of cocaine in exchange for hefty bribes....

Prosecutors cite Hernández as a co-conspirator in the case, saying he accepted money in exchange for protecting a cocaine laboratory and drug loads headed north toward the U.S. They quote Hernández as saying he wanted to make the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration think that Honduras was fighting drug trafficking, but instead he was going to "shove the drugs right up the noses of the gringos" by flooding the United States with cocaine.

The documents also accuse Hernández of public corruption, stating that he admitted in front of an unnamed witness that he had embezzled aid money from the United States through nongovernmental organizations.

President Trump has heaped praise on Hernández, who has visited the Oval Office multiple times, perhaps because he has been a willing partner in controversial Trump administration immigration measures. Under one agreement, Honduras receives non-Honduran migrants who have been denied a chance at claiming asylum in the U.S....
