But consider - There are 6,000 or so bears in WNC, and a lot of people have gone hiking for years and never seen one. Not even bear poop. Now bears aren't that shy, and of course sometimes join in your camping experience or ask to rummage the trash can in your yard, but other than those, seeing a bear in the wild is fairly unusual. Consider that there are more moose than people in the area of Vermont know as "Northeast Kingdom" and yet a lot of people have never seen one.

Now instead of thousands of not-very-shy bears and road-salt loving moose, you have a critter that is pretty rare, and is very shy. What are the odds that a given person in the woods at a given time will luck onto seeing this thing who works very hard at not being seen? I'm not saying - and don't know - if Bigfoots are real or not, but just because nobody has produced a body doesn't mean they aren't.

This reminds me of a time my wife and I invited a bunch of our coworkers to a hockey game. The account manager had given us a luxury box to make up for a bad experience we had a few games earlier.

The game was our Tampa Bay Lightning vs. the Toronto Mapleleafs. One of my wife’s guests was a former amateur hockey player. My wife asked him the similar question, “shouldn’t it be the maple leaves?”

I thought that was a good question, since I didn’t know the answer either. He explained that it was one team with multiple players (one Bigfoot with multiple feet), therefore the team was the maple leafs. Each player was a maple leaf. If they were on two teams each named maple leaf, then the two teams together could be the maple leaves, but they’re not.

I don’t know. I was already a few drinks in by this time, so I could have just made it up. Cheers!

However, the one I randomly opened is largely a discussion about breaking forum rules. Ironic, Bigfoot don't follow no stinkin' rules.

The question hit upon one of my grammatical pet peeves, somewhat but not entirely related to the maybe mythical creature. But to answer the question, without doubt, the plural would be "bigfoots." "Bigfoot" is the name of the creature - one word. Sure it sounds awkward, but to say "Bigfeet" is not pluralizing, but actually changing the name. It is not like "wolf" and "wolves" where the plural comes from a standard grammatical plural variation. But that brings me to the other part of peeve. It has become common for people on TV and in print to refer to a "couple" as plural. F'rinstance, they might say "the couple have two dogs." Nope. "couple" is singular, even if it consists of two people. "The couple HAS two dogs." On the other hand, if you insist on using "have" it would be "Jen and Jake have two dogs." Same with "the team have..." Nope. Substitute "it" for either couple or team, and it's very clear. And don't get me on a soap box about "we had went..." Where does anybody even learn that could possibly be acceptable? Yet there it is, pretty much every day somewhere.
