It's a good thing that slavery was used for growing cotton rather than the corn grown mostly in the northern states, otherwise dissolving it would be impossible. The human stomach secretes low-pH hydrochloric acid (not to mention digestive enzymes), but no matter how much acid you have, the corn comes out intact.

That's a rather embarrassing excuse for exoneration.

I bet the writer is tired to hearing the claim that racist Southern Democrats became racist Southern Republicans -- the truth hurts.

Don't forget the Republican Lee Atwater's acknowledgement of Republican racism:

You start out in 1954 by saying, “Nigger, nigger, nigger.” By 1968 you can’t say “nigger”—that hurts you, backfires.
