Mike Lindell's election fraud conspiracies are too wild even for OANN.

The MyPillow CEO and big fan of former President Donald Trump has been spouting unproven and unhinged conspiracy theories alleging Trump actually won re-election for months now. And on Friday, he bought out a three-hour spot on the far-right One America News Network to host a so-called documentary outlining his very false claims.

OANN is no stranger to airing falsities about the 2020 election; the lies it promoted often even ended up in Trump's tweets until his Twitter suspension last month. But Lindell's documentary apparently went too far, leading the network to put a massive disclaimer ahead of the presentation that both disavows Lindell's claims and encourages viewers to "hear from all sides," even Lindell's patently false one....

It's not certain that the shooting had anything to do with the National Lampoon cover.

The inability and/or unwillingness of people to at least make an effort to separate fact from fiction does not bode well for the nation. Maybe it's not totally new, since a lot of people did indeed panic during the 1938 airing of "War of the Worlds" even with a clear disclaimer, and I'm sure there are some around who are sure they've had an "Encounter of the Third Kind" or otherwise been probed, but still. The level of willful gullibility is amazing.

I have a theory about all of this.

Television and movies were extremely prevelant throughout many of our lives. From the time we were born until the present day. And for many of us (me at least), our parents and grandparents grew up with it as well.

A lot of people live vicariously through TV. I think this is the reason half baked memes so easily manipulate many people. They play on those old television tropes that people grew up on, like grizzled up, ultra masculine cowboys scoffing at people being "soft" nowadays. Or something. Clint Eastwood memes were pretty popular too.

Like you said, people have difficulty separating fiction from reality. Case in point the capitol insurrectionists. That Q garbage pulls from many of said tropes you see in movies - some shadowy entity (the deep state) and some hero working behind the scenes (Q) to save us all in a final battle between good and evil (the storm or whatever).

It's super cringey.
