It may take a couple of squads of those Space Force Guardians to get this Warp Speed gig off its ass.
We've known since Sept that we would have a vaccine in late Nov or Dec. Plenty of time for planning effective distribution, but health depts were swamped with testing and contact tracing and hospitals were swamped with the sick and dying. We have a federal govt for exactly moments like this, and it utterly failed us.
This may be of interest. Snowbirders and vacationers are getting the vaccine in Florida and residents are crossingcounty lines. As long as they qualify for the phase being administered - 1st responders, over 65, etc. - they qualify for this federal program.
Trump: “We had the safest border in the history of our country - or at least recorded history. I guess maybe a thousand years ago it was even better.”
Florida’s COVID vaccine rollout is more like a flaming ant farm, only less organized.
Day after day, millions of exasperated seniors armed with laptops, cell phones, iPads and tech-savvy grandchildren try to penetrate swamped local websites that fleetingly offer appointments.
Meanwhile, in the blue-sky parallel universe accessible only to the mind of Gov. Ron DeSantis, the state’s distribution networks are humming along like well-oiled machines. The only problem is a shortage of vaccines.
Space limitations prevent recapping all the governor’s boasting, bungles and deceptions since the pandemic began. Now that his hero Donald Trump is out of office, there’s nobody at the White House to give DeSantis cover when he equivocates.
The result is a daily display of doubletalk that would be comical if so many lives and jobs weren’t at stake. The governor never had a master plan for getting out the vaccine, but he’s determined to ignore and discredit Joe Biden’s.
As soon as the new administration began discussing the use of FEMA to set up mass inoculation sites, DeSantis curtly blew off the idea, saying we don’t need federal help in Florida; just send more vaccines!
A White House spokesman responded with interesting supply statistics that DeSantis had either overlooked, or hidden from the public — the state had administered only about half of the 3.1 million doses it had been sent.
Snap! Trump would never have burned the governor so bluntly, and with actual facts....

Article continues with lots of appalling data.
I'm a big fan of Carl Hiaasen and I love the attacks on DeSantis (I think - more later), but the state has turned everything over to the counties. Some are disasters, some work great.
I'm not sure where it came from - cdc, I think, but there was reporting in January that the 2nd dose would have to be held back in order to insure the effectiveness of the 1st dose. I know that is what Escambia County did.
Carl's main criticism falls short.
My choices for governor are DeSantis, Scott or Rubio. DeSantis seems less bad and more beatable by a dem.
So, who would you vote for,Stalin?
or stalin?

I didn't notice that Carl Hiaasen is the author. Thanks.

That allows the state a Pontius Pilate defense.

I had not heard that, pre-release testing should have answered that question. I do know that 2nd doses are being delayed in order to provide some protection for the most people.
Carl's main criticism falls short.
How so?

The election isn't until 2024. Most people will probably decide based on more current issues, though hopefully some will hold DeSantis accountable for all of the deaths now.
Well, I guess one could say "easy for me to say" since I've already had my first shot and get the second on Thursday, but I think they're doing a good job with what they have to work with. Getting shots to millions of people in a relatively short period of time would be a monumental task even if you had all the vaccines on hand and didn't have to keep them at an outrageously low temp. Sure it would have been nice if, several years ago, somebody had put together a detailed plan for "what to do when you have to give 300 million people shots that have to be kept at -40F" but apparently they didn't or even if they did, Trump's people tossed it. So they're starting from scratch, by necessity making plans up as they go along. But the priority list hasn't changed much since it was originally published, although not everybody is progressing through at the same rate. The sign-up process has changed as better systems go online, but the one Ulysses used is working pretty well. Seems if they get to regular scheduled vaccine deliveries and keep adding vaccination sites it will keep improving.
The temperature requirements weren't known, but otherwise they had months to plan. I blame the lack of federal and in some cases state direction and resources.

Lack of federal leadership/guidance, fershure, but yeah, Trump's people had months, not so much the people actually running it now. Anyway, whatever the original plan would have been, the cold storage requirement would have chunked in a monkey wrench anyway. Like if FEMA had a bunch of MRE's stacked up and ready to go to the next hurricane and when it happens they find out the MRE's have to be microwaved to be edible.

... In his first major interview since becoming president, Mr Biden told CBS news anchor, Norah O’Donnell, the country faced a challenge to reach herd immunity before the end of the summer.
The US president said the rate of vaccination had to be accelerated to meet the target of 75 per cent of Americans getting the jab set by infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci.
Mr Biden said his administration had been led to believe there was far more vaccine available than turned out.
“So that’s why we’ve ramped up every way we can,” he added.
The new administration is using the Defence Production Act to get companies to boost production of vaccine and protective equipment.
In addition, the administration has reached an agreement for all 32 NFL stadia to be used as vaccination sites....
Darkly funny given that Dolt .45 was touting the vaccines as a huge admin* success.

And it coulda been, if Trump had just stayed out of it. Pushing to hurry-up approval, contracting for large amounts of vaccine, getting the military involved in distribution - all generally good things. On (I think) "60 Minutes" the general in charge of the ridiculously named "Warp Speed" seemed to have a good grip on logistics. But largely because of Trump, the plan stopped at the General's door, with no real strategy for getting doses past state lines or actual in-the-arm destinations.

SC just opened up for 65+. TV news says there are long lines and impossible online and phone scheduling. SC blames a shortfall in vaccine delivery, which brings it back to the feds.
People need to be a bit more patient with workers, planners, organizers trying to do the best they can. Scheduling is bad because everybody wants their shot now (at the earliest eligibility) and space is limited because they can't schedule very far past a few days or so because they don't know about vaccine delivery. (still blame Trump)
An old mostly closed hospital in Escondido, north SD county, has been adapted for an all-in-one covid place with vaccines, testing, and antibody treatment all in one place. The vaccinations will be drive-through, using three floors of the parking garage with a current volume of 1,400 per day. Scheduling will be through the MyTurn system that automatically schedules a second shot with the first. No word on whether they'd be able to re-open parts of the hospital for emergency or overflow covid treatment, but if needed, that would be better than a tent in the parking lot.
