Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Never been a huge fan of halibut. As I recall, it has much less oil/fat content than other fish, like salmon. Consequently it doesn't have as much taste, IMHO.

I used to eat much more fish in general in the 70's. Then as the health craze caught on, I guess, people started buying more fish and less beef. The price of a good fish today is almost that of a good beef steak.

You never know, especially in the midwest, but it was from an upscale store and supposed to be fresh. It was firm and had good color.

Could just be me.
Well you can always go up to Wis-can-sin for some Walleye. And maybe some beer cheese soup while you're there.

Don't forget about the whitefish and perch.

This Is Your Brain on Junk Food

In a legal proceeding two decades ago, Michael Szymanczyk, CEO of tobacco giant Philip Morris, was asked to define addiction. “My definition of addiction is a repetitive behavior that some people find difficult to quit,” he responded.

Szymanczyk was speaking in the context of smoking. But a fascinating new book by Michael Moss, an investigative journalist and bestselling author, argues that the tobacco executive’s definition of addiction could apply to our relationship with another group of products that Philip Morris sold and manufactured for decades: highly processed foods.

In his new book, “Hooked,” Moss explores the science behind addiction and builds a case that food companies have painstakingly engineered processed foods to hijack the reward circuitry in our brains, causing us to overeat and helping to fuel a global epidemic of obesity and chronic disease. Moss suggests that processed foods like cheeseburgers, potato chips and ice cream are not only addictive, but that they can be even more addictive than alcohol, tobacco and drugs. The book draws on internal industry documents and interviews with industry insiders to argue that some food companies in the past couple of decades became aware of the addictive nature of their products and took drastic steps to avoid accountability, such as shutting down important research into sugary foods and spearheading laws preventing people from suing food companies for damages.

In another cynical move, Moss writes, food companies beginning in the late 1970s started buying a slew of popular diet companies, allowing them to profit off our attempts to lose the weight we gained from eating their products. Heinz, a processed food giant, bought Weight Watchers in 1978 for $72 million. Unilever, which sells Klondike bars and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, paid $2.3 billion for SlimFast in 2000. Nestle, which makes chocolate bars and Hot Pockets, purchased Jenny Craig in 2006 for $600 million. And in 2010, the private equity firm that owns Cinnabon and Carvel ice cream purchased Atkins Nutritionals, the company that sells low-carb bars, shakes and snacks. Most of these diet brands were later sold to other parent companies.

“The food industry blocked us in the courts from filing lawsuits claiming addiction, they started controlling the science in problematic ways, and they took control of the diet industry,” Moss said in an interview. “I’ve been crawling through the underbelly of the processed food industry for 10 years, and I continue to be stunned by the depths of the deviousness of their strategy to not just tap into our basic instincts, but to exploit our attempts to gain control of our habits.” ...
 :x Capitalism sucks.

Mmmm, cheeseburgers, potato chips and ice cream.

I've seen them, but never seen them sold. I'll keep an eye open for them.

Interesting - I always thought that tuna was one of the few fish that regulated their temperature (a little).

I bought crawfish the other day for $10/pound at the Co-op since they're not a threatened resource. Steamed and dipped in garlic butter. Tasty, but too much work to get at the tail and occasional big claw meat, and not enough of it to justify the price. Sigh.

I
Our fishmonger at the harbour gets them only occasionally. As the article said, nobody actually fishes for them, but drag them in with the tuna sometimes. The slabs we bought looked like a strip steak in size and shape, and about an inch thick. Grilled with only olive oil, sea salt and ground black pepper. Cooked evenly through with light crust in about 12 minutes over medium-high heat. Flavour light enough to go well with pretty much any seasoning you like.

Ya gotta suck the heads.

The last time I hosted a real boil a 30+ lb sack was $11 or 12 dollars.

Were yours already steamed, if not, you need to purge them in salt water while still alive.

Yes, pre-cooked, I just steamed them to heat them up.

But that where the flavor is.

You made me hungry. Already steamed and spiced right at Joe Pattie's are $4.99/lb.

You can have all that you can stand. I'll take good prime rib or beef filet any day over any of that stuff. I like to have it so that the blood trickles down the corners of my mouth as evidence of its goodness. I also like fish with lemon juice and no blood. I can go either way. Also eat sour grass if I happen to spot it. That stuff kicks ass.

Beer is good.

I always use one of the package mixes like Zatarain’s and add cayenne pepper and more garlic.

In a proper boil (a 30 lb sack of live crawfish) I add to the Zatarain's a jar each of black pepper corns, ground cayenne pepper, thyme, oregano and bay leaves along with 10 pounds of potatoes and a dozen or two ears of corn.

Friend of mine from Louisiana had flown in live ones for parties, did the entire crawfish boil with corn, onion and potatoes.

The secret is in the sauce. Combine Dukes Mayonnaise and Garlic Power Sauce. She claimed authentic, all I know is it was good.

Both available on Amazon but I'd seen them locally. They used to sell the Garlic Power at Firehouse Subs.

Thanks!!! I'll let you know. It'll probably be awhile until I need to shop again.

I won't be getting live ones, but how do you purge in salt water? Boil (how long?), then drain and add all the stuff with fresh water?
