It's the economy, stupid.

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I read about this less than an hour ago. Truly instructive they're still squawking about the inheritance tax that they've cleverly re named a "death tax" to fool the morons who keep voting for them. Standing for an unneeded tax cut for less than 2,000 family fortunes is just obscene. Or maybe they think trump is going to die soon and are taking one last opportunity to suck his ass.

:D It's an Ivanka relief measure.

How Trump’s team amassed a $1 trillion war chest for Biden to deploy
Despite concerns that markets will be flooded with new U.S. government debt, the Treasury might not have to change its borrowing plans much at all.

Republicans are bashing the new $1.9 trillion pandemic relief package for further ballooning the federal debt, but it’s the Trump administration that greased the path for a smooth federal spending spree.

The Treasury has a cash pile of well over $1 trillion, which will allow the government to quickly disburse money in line with the sweeping new law, including direct checks to millions of Americans that are expected to start hitting bank accounts in the coming week. That robust rainy-day fund was built last year by then-Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who preemptively cranked up the pace of government borrowing, unsure of how and when Congress might mandate further relief measures.

So, despite concerns that markets will be flooded with new U.S. government debt to pay for the rescue package, the Treasury Department might not have to change its borrowing plans much at all to fund the legislation signed into law by President Joe Biden on Thursday.

“There are enormous implications for everyone else, but the Treasury was out in front of this nine months ago,” said Lou Crandall, chief economist at research firm Wrightson ICAP....
Okay, Munchin' did one thing right, and the hypocritical self-proclaimed "deficit hawk" RepuQs are whining nine months too late after not caring a bit about the deficit for the 3.5 years before that.

I hesitate to get into victim blaming, but what do people in a region with vast experience with abusive, exploitative corporations expect when they're approached by a pie-in-the-sky industry, especially one that's built on a scam in the first place and that's known for its unavoidable environmental harm?

An Appalachian town was told a bitcoin mine would bring an economic boom. It got noise pollution and an eyesore.

Limestone, TN
Marble, NC
And "dozens of new cryptocurrency mines have opened across Appalachia".

Yes.
Speaking of lies . . . I'd call it irony, but maybe it's not that surprising. O Really, are you surprised?
Yes, Texans actually pay more in taxes than Californians do
While ITEP's findings were compiled from 2018 data, one expert says not much has changed in Texas over the last four years.

California has the most "equitable" state/local tax structure in the US, while Texas has the 2nd least. Despite right ring propaganda to the contrary, Texas is not low tax for the people most in need. They only care about reducing taxes for the rich, not about helping the poor and creating an equitable system.

Despite being the most fair in the country, California's tax system still isn't really progressive, which exemplifies how regressive state and local tax structures in the US are across the board.

:x Eat the rich.
... ITEP also ranked Texas as the second-most regressive tax state, behind Washington State, due to low-income taxpayers bearing a disproportionate share of the tax burden, according to the nonprofit. In contrast, California was ranked the most progressive tax state because residents in higher tax brackets predominantly pay higher tax rates.
Baaad Washington.
...

State Rep. Gene Wu (D-Houston) wrote on Twitter: "Welcome to Greg Abbott's Texas!" Long Beach, California Mayor Robert Garcia tweeted: "Hey Texans, come over to California to pay lower taxes. And we have great weather."

3 Florida, Hah, the GQP there also touts its "low taxes".

So polls that ask about the economy show lots of people think the Repugs would do a better job, or at least that Dems should be tossed. Why anyone could possibly think Repugs do a better job with the economy is beyond me, and leads me to think they maybe have been living in Berzerkistan for the past few decades. But let's see what the data says. Here's a list of states whose economies are doing well and those who are failing. Anybody want to guess whether there's any association between successful state economy and political color? And would anybody guess red states do better? Nope. Almost all the failing states are red; almost all the successful states are blue, except for the outliers Texas and Florida. Interesting list.

Also, Texas has oil and Florida has an outsized proportion of socialist NASA, military, Medicare and Social Security.

Funny thing is, the economy has historically performed better under Democrats.

The DNC needs a better PR firm.
