Baseball Lost A Team Of Legends This Year

... In the span of just a few weeks, not just one but two iconic St. Louis Cardinals died: Bob Gibson and Lou Brock....

We lost Tom Seaver, the defining Met. Joe Morgan, perhaps the best second baseman to ever play the game, with the Cincinnati Reds and numerous other teams. Whitey Ford, big game pitcher par excellence for the New York Yankees. Al Kaline: Mr. Tiger. And just Saturday, we lost Phil Neikro, the master of the knuckleball.

That’s seven Hall of Fame players. To put it in perspective, we lost seven Hall of Famers combined from 2016 to 2019: Frank Robinson in 2019; Willie McCovey and Red Schoendienst in 2018; Roy Halladay, Jim Bunning and Bobby Doerr in 2017; and Monte Irvin in 2016.

The last time as many as four Hall of Famers died was 2010, when Ron Santo, Robin Roberts, Bob Feller and Sparky Anderson all passed — though Anderson had earned induction as a manager, not a player. Most years since the turn of the century, it’s one or two Hall of Famers; in 2004 and 2008, it was none.

... to truly comprehend the number and ability of the baseball players we lost in 2020, I’ve compiled a 26-man roster of those who died this year. Say what you will about the Dodgers: This is a team that I think could beat anyone....

He went into extra innings, but passed on Thursday. He was released from the hospital on January 5, 2021 after being there since early Nov. Opps.

Old Style

Old Style was first brewed in 1902 by the G. Heileman Brewing Company in La Crosse, Wisconsin, under the name Old Style Lager; it was popular in Wisconsin, the Chicago metro area, Minnesota, eastern Iowa, Lincoln, Nebraska, southwestern Michigan, Upper Michigan, and Fargo and Grand Forks, North Dakota. It has been served at Wrigley Field for decades and is popular with fans of the Chicago Cubs. The original Heileman's Old Style brewery in La Crosse is now owned by the City Brewing Company. It brews La Crosse Lager, which is based upon the original Old Style recipe and is kräusened for 30 days.

In the early 1990s, Chicago-born actor Dennis Farina made a series of commercials for Old Style beer, mentioning that it was "our great beer... and they can't have it." In 2016, the production of Old Style returned to the La Crosse brewery under a new contract with Pabst; City Brewery became the sole producer of the Old Style brand. Yes, I had one of those t-shirts. Took me a couple of years to actually go to a night game. I remember coming home from work one day and seeing the big ass helicopters lifting the light stantions to the roof.

A similar experience is still available at some spring training sites and at many minor league parks.

I know there were special circumstances - opening day, limited attendance, yada, but the cheapest stubhub ticket to get into the Padres game was over $300. I think the cheapest seat in any MLB stadium (from which you might be able to tell the difference in the grass and the running path) is $50+. Plus parking. Plus $10 dogs.

We wintered in Dunedin for a couple of years maybe 10 or so years ago, and really enjoyed the Blue Jays spring training. The stadium is close to downtown, easy walking distance of a few blocks from plenty of street and city almost-free parking. We got good seats for $20 or so, beers were reasonable (Labatt and crafts), and food selection was good. All 1:00 p.m. games. Pre-game everybody sang O Canada and Star Spangled Banner, and the stadium announcer cracked mostly bad jokes and ran fun/silly contests between innings. Baseball as it should be.

They renovated the stadium a couple of years ago, and the Jays are actually starting the 2021 season there. Might not be the same experience any more - probably isn't - but it was fun at the time.

So - we may find out about the legality of vaccine passports sooner than we might have thought. Petco Park, the home of the pretend MLB Padres, can let about 17,000 people in under the current tier of the doghouse for San Diego County. There is no requirement to have a vaccine - but - if you did get a vaccine or can produce a negative covid test from the previous 72 hours, you get better seats and better seating conditions. Somebody will surely whine.

Also, there are no roaming hot dog/beer vendors. You have to use the app to order food and they text you when it's ready. Theoretically keeps lines from forming, but it looks like there'd still be a lineup to pick up. You can get beer brought to your seat, but you still have to use the "beer me" feature on the app.

Not yet, as far as I know, but it'll be coming. Some people just can't resist the urge to joust with those windmills.
