Blasts from the Pasts
Don't know what inspired me to look this up, but it was my first ever stadium show. The opening acts were Peter Tosh and Journey with Steve Perry's first tour and album. Journey kicked ass.

Re: Blasts from the Pasts
Fun question - first stadium show. Back in the day, UNC had a spring "Jubilee" that had a lot of good music acts in several venues across campus. Some in Kenan stadium. They were all good, particularly on spring days/nights with a good companion, lots of beer and if you're lucky, some weed. For a variety of good and understandable reasons, I don't remember my actual first in the stadium, but it may have been Beach Boys. James Taylor was just an unknown local act back then and didn't get the stadium venue. Could have been Jay and the Americans, though. One year there was Mamas and Papas, who weren't in the stadium either, but showed up two or so hours late all stoned on their asses.

Re: Blasts from the Pasts
That sounds about right. One of my first concerts was Aerosmith with The Cars opening on their first album. The Cars kicked ass, Aerosmith sucked. Think it was the height of the "Toxic Twins" days. They played the first chords of Dream On at one point and Stephen Tyler said fuck it and walked off stage. He came back but they didn't think play their biggest hit.
We were pissed, drove two hours to get to the show. Four of us in my lemon yellow Superbeetle.

I never went to RFK or Baltimore's stadium for a show as a teen, but I did see Pink Floyd at the Capital Center Arena. My first stadium show was driving 2500 miles round trip to see the Grateful Dead and The Who in Oakland in 1976. Wow. Four or five of us in my electric green Renault.

Saw The Who and The Dead on different occasions in Wisconsin in the mid 80's. I was the DD for the Dead, I was so bored I fell asleep.
The Who gave me hearing loss for a week.

Saw The Who "final" show in Toronto, then saw them in Tampa from about 5 rows back in maybe the best show ever. Then a few years later in a forgettable show that I don't even remember - maybe Orlando.
Never saw "real" Beatles, who weren't really very good in concert anyway, but I saw McCartney sometime early 90's and it was great. Saw Stones and Michael Jackson (with Jacksons) "Victory" tour. All stadium shows.
Never saw the Dead.

The first concert I ever went to was to see Goose Creek Symphony at Freedom Hall in Johnson City, TN. The Allman Brothers Band was the second billed act. That was 1970 I think. A group of us went there in a former Tom Still Transfer moving van that was about twenty feet long; the lower part of the van was red with a thin blue stripe above that with stars placed evenly within it and the upper part was white. We were drinking Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill wine laced with mescaline. The best concert I ever saw was Crosby, Stills, and Nash in Oakland in 1977

Saw the Allman Brothers a few times. One of the most memorable was their last show around 1979 or so in the St. Pete civic center. They didn't want to quit and kept jamming together for an extra hour or so at the end of the planned set.
We were able to walk up the the stage and just hang with them while they had fun.

Saw Crosby Stills and Nash in the early 80's in Chicagoland. A buddy's sister was engaged to an uber uber wealthy dude who got second row tickets. Great show, but the guy insisted on leaving before the encore to beat traffic. Didn't have a choice, bummed me out.

Wasn't an option at that venue.

I think that you should meekly accept unsolicited criticism of your behavior 35 years ago from someone who knows that he's wiser than you were. Got it?

Yeah, you're right. Especially as he has superior knowledge of the venue, transportation situation and my destination at that time as well as the wisdom thing.
My bad.

Re: Blasts from the Pasts
The Allman Brothers kicked ass. That concert I went to was when both of them were still alive; by 79 Duane had been dead for a long time. They were never the same band after he died. The "Eat a Peach" album was dedicated to Duane; he supposedly died on a motorcycle after hitting a truck full of peaches. And if you don't have it, get the "Live at Fillmore East" Allman Brothers disc or album....it's the best live rock recording ever made. From summer 71. Duane died less than six months later.GoCubsGo wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 1:39 pmSaw the Allman Brothers a few times. Well, he could have stuck a gun in somebody's face and said "give me a ride, bitch." But he didn't. And maybe hitching a ride in CA just isn't the same as Chicago. But I could be wrong.Ulysses wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 2:09 pmWell, you could have stayed and hitched a ride back home.GoCubsGo wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 1:42 pmSaw Crosby Stills and Nash in the early 80's in Chicagoland. Could be. Out here commandeering a vehicle with a firearm is generally frowned upon. It could be charged as a hi-jacking.neoplacebo wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 5:44 pmWell, he could have stuck a gun in somebody's face and said "give me a ride, bitch." But he didn't.
