The car thread ...

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

No pretext in this: Sunday night here in the hood a stolen car being pursued by non local officers came upon a totally different crime scene in which the local cops had blocked off the street in both directions while investigating a shooting which occurred after a "disturbance." Anyway, the stolen car crashed at the cop block and five people scattered. Rumor is that three of them were TN state legislators. Marsha Blackburn was in the stolen car but flashed her Senate ID and nutjob immunity card with a picture of Lincoln on it ("nothing I do or say can be interpreted by any reasonable person as making any sense at all") and was able to leave the scene.

Nah, Marsha was not in the carm nor were any state legislators.....the people in the car were just ordinary regular criminals instead of GOP wingnuts in suits. But the rest of it is real. I just threw that part in about Marsha Blackburn as an extra. I hate her. And I don't just hate for the hell of it; you have to earn my hate.

Pretext laws are fun. We also have a law against noise that was enforced until motorcycles became big with the military class.
Why Police Can Stop Motorists With Air Fresheners Hanging in Their Cars

... At Stanford University’s Open Policing Project, researchers analyzing more than 100 million traffic stops around the country found persistent racial disparities, with Black and Hispanic drivers more likely to be stopped and more likely to be searched. Collectively, officers found contraband at a lower rate among those searches than in searches of white drivers....

Paige Fernandez, a policing policy advocate at the American Civil Liberties Union, said low-level infractions such as expired registrations and air fresheners on mirrors should not be handled by armed police officers.

“The danger that police traffic stops pose greatly outweighs any benefit of having them engage in that,” Fernandez said.

Mayor Mike Elliott of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, where Wright was killed, said police officers should not be pulling people over because of an expired registration during the coronavirus pandemic.

The prohibitions against objects hanging from rearview mirrors can extend to fuzzy dice, graduation tassels and rosaries. Last year, amid the pandemic, authorities in Maine warned against hanging masks....

States have long grappled with how to best handle the obstruction issue. After court data showed more than 1,400 citations in one year for people driving on Maryland highways with windshields obstructed by objects or materials, the state changed its law in 2017. The violation is no longer a primary offense, which would justify a traffic stop, but a secondary offense, which can only be cited after a motorist has been pulled over for something more serious, such as speeding.

Virginia has followed suit as part of a broader package of reforms limiting when the police can conduct traffic stops.

Dana Schrad, executive director of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, said the group had supported some of the changes, including a prohibition on stopping people for recently expired registrations. When lawmakers changed the law to require that a driver’s view must be “substantially” obstructed by objects to be considered a violation, police agencies did not object....

“Even if you are polite, calm, even college-educated, the bottom line is that, at the end of the day, you are still Black,” Taylor said. “That’s all the cop sees and stereotypes.”

... “If I get in a car with somebody and they have something hanging from their mirror, I’m like, ‘Can you take that down?’” (Brittany) Mixon said. “Being a Black passenger might trigger something in a racist cop, so let’s just remove that altogether from the situation.”

Conservative website mocked for ‘breaking exclusive’ story about AOC’s bad parking

... In a story on Wednesday, the congresswoman was accused of parking “illegally” at a Whole Foods supermarket, opposite an apartment complex in Washington DC.

The Washington Free Beacon alleged, in a so-called “breaking exclusive”, that it was a “parking scandal” with consequences for Ms Ocasio-Cortez’s “ongoing quest to transform the United States into a socialist paradise”.
It worked, I'm now a free market Repug.
Although it was not clear if any laws were broken by the Democratic congresswoman, dozens of critics of took to Twitter to mock the website for its story.

“AOC’s ability to get ineffectually angry guys to beclown themselves remains impressive,” a user wrote of the so-called “scandal”. Another remarked: “Breaking exclusive: people continue to stalk AOC, report on inane doings”.

Others referred to allegations of sexual trafficking against Matt Gaetz, an ally of Donald Trump, and compared the two members of Congress’s conduct.

A criminal investigation into finances of the one-term president, and the Capitol insurrection carried out by Trump supporters in January, also came in for questioning.

“Matt Gaetz (Republican) is currently being investigated for sex trafficking and sex with a minor,” a Twitter user wrote of The Washington Free Beacon article.

“Donald Trump and Family (Republicans) currently being investigated for tax fraud,” the user added. “The January 6th Capitol Insurrection....”.

Another wrote: “While the right wing goes crazy over an alleged parking violation by AOC, Trump, his spawn, and his cronies are under CRIMINAL investigation for numerous financial felonies.”

The Washington Free Beacon also came under for criticising Ms Ocasio-Cortez for allegedly driving from New York City to Washington DC in a Tesla electric vehicle.

“BREAKING EXCLUSIVE: AOC owns a cool car and lives well within her means,” wrote a Twitter user.

“I hit a curb last week and continuously park on or over the lines, make sure to get this breaking exclusive too,” added another.

4.8 million not enough to buy a 71 Barracuda convertible with the 426 hemi V8 engine. This car was probably less than $5,000 off the showroom floor.

Yeah, crazy. Those old Mopar Chrysler Plymouth cars have come to be dominant as far as high dollar old muscle cars go. I was friends with a guy whose dad owned the local Plymouth dealership in my hometown; he always had access to things like Roadrunners, GTX, Dusters, Barracudas. Back then, the local cop cars were Plymouth Furys that they'd bring to the dealership for warranty service concerns. We used to smoke pot in the cop cars that were in for service and always got a kick how the cops would freak out if they only knew. About 1973 those conversion vans were the big thing and we also abused those, but as far as I was concerned, the high performance stuff had more of an allure for me than those cushy vans, but they were nice. But there's just nothing like having your head being pushed back in the seat while riding in a high performance car while knowing that nothing that happens will result in any consequences. The good old days.

Two arrested in deadly road rage shooting of boy on California freeway

Not that it justifies gunplay in any way, but one of the early reports I heard stated that Aiden's mother, Joanna Cloonan, had "gestured" at the accused couple. Since then, nada. Does this mean the report was erroneous, I misheard, or are her actions being covered up? Did any of you hear about a gesture? Just curious, I'm fine with charges either way and if mom contributed she'll have to live with it.

I hears/read that she birded him. Not to blame the victim or forget who is the bad guy here, but that wasn't very smart - especially toward somebody who looked as crazy as this guy.

Yesterday's San Diego Union-Tribune:
According to accounts from the mother and witnesses who stopped to help her, another car cut her off and she responded with a hand gesture and the car slipped in behind her and someone inside fired a shot through the rear of her car.

Yeah, LA Times:
... That morning, Aiden's mother, Joanna Cloonan, told another motorist that she and her son were in the carpool lane when another car cut her off as she started switching lanes to exit.

She made an obscene gesture toward the people in the other car, who then maneuvered behind her and fired a gun at her vehicle, officials said....
Maybe there is no media coverup, though I wonder if she's admitted to the bird since.

The article goes on to describe what an ammosexual asshole the shooter is.

Some people (and some of them are voters) just don't understand the concept of acting in ones own best interest. Ignoring or driving away from an asshole isn't being a wimp or whatever - it's taking an action that is in your best interest and that of your passengers. In this woman's case, she had literally nothing possible to gain by her "obscene gesture" and obviously quite a lot to lose.

Traffic light here in Hooterville with 2 left turn lanes. I'm in the right hand one. Guy in the left hand lane makes his turn into my lane, I honk, he flips me the bird. I'm alone in my car, so I return the gesture. He pulls into a parking lot, with what appears to be his grandchild in the car! He has no idea what kind of maniac I might be, and he was in the wrong, anyhow. I drove on. Idiot.

Hell, i know what kind of maniac you are and am convinced that you'd heft an ice cold unopened can of beer at this asshole if this had happened out where the rubber meets the road and at 70mph. This clown just doesn't know how lucky he is.

Here's a neat story and video of this guy and his 66 Chevelle (actually a Malibu at birth). He's put seven different engines in it and nearly that many transmissions. The 66 Chevelle is one of my all time favorite cars.
