Herd of cows escape slaughterhouse and stampede through California neighborhood

Stay free lone escapee, stay free!

I like how the cow destined to be returned to the slaughterhouse picks the guy that's probably eaten the most beef to attack the moment he comes into view:

National Park Service once again tells tourists to not push their friends into bears

Image

The National Park Service is once again offering bear safety tips — and that includes asking tourists to avoid pushing their friends down when bears are around....

First, you should never play dead, run, shout or make any sudden movements. You also should never push a friend down to save yourself, the National Park Service said.

“Do not run up and push the bear and do not push a slower friend down…even if you feel the friendship has run its course,” park rangers said.

... “If the friend you pushed down somehow made it up a tree and is now extending you a hand, there’s a good chance you’re not getting up that tree. Karma’s a bear.” ...

I thought about posting that.
... Monda said her guide told them to get even closer to the animals before the encounter happened.

“My guide wanted to get us close, ended up almost on top of us,” Monda said on Instagram. “Got a guide service to fly me in on a bush plane and hike me around.” ...
:wtf: No, it's not "Cool" to be that close to angry grizzlies. The guide should lose her/his license.

Walmart Employee Tackles Deer in Wisconsin Store (with video)

A deer that made its way into a Walmart in Baraboo, Wisconsin, was tackled and pinned to the floor of the store by an intrepid employee, footage shows.

The employee managed to pin the doe to the floor until other workers opened the back doors of the store. The deer was then released and “safely” exited the building, according to local media....
Is she single? The Walmart employee not the deer, I mean.

One could reasonably say the deer got its ass kicked in this case. Or one could illogically argue that it didn't. But the deer got its ass kicked.

I guess that depends on how you view the event. I was just ass uming the deer was a common white tailed one that got its white ass kicked at a Wal Mart. Happens every day I suspect. With white but not always with deer.

:D White tail kicked at Walmart would be a vague headline.
Also, if a mule deer gets its ass kicked does that mean its metaphorical rear, which also happens to be white, or its donkey, which is ironic given that it's a mule deer.

Yeah, I'd be backing away as quickly as possible from those feuding grizzlies. They say "never run from a bear", but I suppose backing away is OK.

According to the article,
Monda (the hiker taking the video) said her guide told them to get even closer to the animals before the encounter happened.

“My guide wanted to get us close, ended up almost on top of us,” Monda said on Instagram.
I dunno, but that encounter could have gone very wrong. Grizzlies are not known for being gentle with people.

Video shows black bears joining California beachgoers in the water

... A large adult black bear and three cubs took to a South Lake Tahoe beach on Sunday to run and play in the water as about a dozen onlookers watched in awe. The cubs wrestled in the lake as they beat the high temperatures, which hit 90 degrees in South Lake Tahoe that day.

The four bears — along with a few wild geese — made a day at the lake resemble a spontaneous day at the zoo for the beachgoers.

"We were all a little shocked," Jen Watkins, who filmed the bears, told NBC affiliate KCRA. She said the bear took off with somebody’s cooler before returning to the forest.

Authorities from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office told KCRA that getting close to bears is “very dangerous.” ...

From the article.
A growing number of bears in the Sierra Nevada have been found to suffer from encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain that makes bears “dog-like” in behavior and more fearless around humans. At least four bears in California have been found to have the disease since March 2020.
Yikes.

Here's a fun article on the most deadly viruses. The first one, Marburg, rings a bell. I remember one of the grad students at the lab near where I worked back in the late 70's/early 80's couldn't stop talking about Marburg.

The deadliest viruses in history
Marburg virus

The Marburg virus causes hemorrhagic fever in humans and non-human primates.

Scientists identified Marburg virus in 1967, when small outbreaks occurred among lab workers in Germany who were exposed to infected monkeys imported from Uganda. Marburg virus is similar to Ebola in that both can cause hemorrhagic fever, meaning that infected people develop high fevers and bleeding throughout the body that can lead to shock, organ failure and death.

The mortality rate in the first outbreak was 25%, but it was more than 80% in the 1998-2000 outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as in the 2005 outbreak in Angola, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The article discusses a number of viruses, including Covid-19. However, it's over a year old, and that shows in the text when it says Covid has only infected "thousands worldwide". Other than that, it's a good review.
