Oh, flash update.....the other day the state commission that is charged with the removal and or preservation of monuments voted something like 25 to 1 to get Nathan Bedford Forrest's bust out of the State house. Friday a TN GOP legislator proposed getting rid of the commission. It's sort of like that cancel culture they keep whining about, except in reverse.

Workers begin removing Forrest remains from Tennessee park



Workers arrived at a Tennessee park Tuesday to begin the process of digging up the remains of Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, and moving the former slave trader’s body from its longtime resting place in Memphis to a museum hundreds of miles away.

Crews prepared to remove the graves of Forrest and his wife from Health Sciences Park in Memphis’ busy medical district. The park used to bear the name of the early Ku Klux Klan leader, and feature a statue of the cavalryman on a horse, but the name has been changed and the statue removed in recent years.

Workers must dismantle the statue’s pedestal before they can disinter the Forrests' remains and move them to a Confederate museum in Middle Tennessee. A heavy crane was positioned near the pedestal as workers prepared the site Tuesday morning. The entire process is expected to take weeks.

... Forrest sold slaves in Memphis and served in the Confederate army as a cavalry general. In April 1864, Forrest’s troops attacked Fort Pillow in northwest Tennessee and killed 200 to 300 Union soldiers, most of them Black.

Forrest was later accused of massacring the Union soldiers. Questions linger as to whether they were killed as they tried to surrender. Northern newspaper reports referred to the battle as an atrocity.

Historians say he later became an early leader of the Ku Klux Klan, though some of Forrest’s supporters dispute that. Forrest’s critics call him a violent racist.

Makes me hope there is a hell.

The remains of Forrest and his wife were moved from a Memphis cemetery and buried under the statue of the former Memphis city council member in 1904. The city took down the statue in December 2017 after selling the public park to a nonprofit group, thus circumventing a state law barring the removal of historic monuments from public areas.

A judge in Nashville ruled that the city and Memphis Greenspace, the non-profit that made the park privately operated, removed the statue legally.

The remains will be reburied and the statue placed at the National Confederate Museum at Elm Springs in Columbia, according to an affidavit from Bedford Forrest Myers, a great-great-grandson. Owned by the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, the museum opened to the public in October. It is located about 200 miles (320 kilometers) from Memphis....

Veteran’s mic turned off as he detailed Blacks’ role in founding Memorial Day

Retired Army Lt. Col. Barnard Kemter’s 11-minute speech was quieted in what he thought was a serious technical glitch.

An Ohio veteran mentioning the role freed Black people played in the founding of Memorial Day found his speech somewhat silenced during a holiday ceremony this week.

Retired Army Lt. Col. Barnard Kemter‘s microphone was cut off while giving the keynote address Monday at Markillie Cemetery in Hudson, Ohio as he began to share a story about how former enslaved Black people were the first to honor deceased Union soldiers after the end of the Civil War, the origins of Memorial Day.

For two minutes, Kemter’s 11-minute speech was quieted in what he thought was a technical glitch.

However, Cindy Suchan, who was the chairperson of the Memorial Day event sponsored by the Hudson American Legion Auxiliary, confirmed to The Akron Beacon Journal that it was either she or the adjutant of the American Legion Lee-Bishop Post 464, Jim Garrison, who intentionally turned the microphone off at that point. According to the report, when pressed, Suchan would not confirm exactly who cut Kemter’s speech.

She told the news outlet Kemter was interrupted because that portion of his speech “was not relevant” to the program. She added that the “theme of the day was honoring Hudson veterans.” ...

Jim Garrison resigned from his position as Post Officer and officials have demanded that he resign his membership altogether, according to a statement from the organisation.

“The American Legion Department of Ohio does not hold space for members, veterans, or families of veterans who believe that censoring Black history is acceptable behavior,” the statement said....

Mr Kemter’s microphone was abruptly cut off at one point as he discussed how Black Americans honoured Union soldiers who died as prisoners of war during the US Civil War with a proper burial, decorated their graves and held a parade with thousands of participants....

Before the event, Ms Suchan reportedly told Mr Kenter to remove parts of the speech that discussed how formerly enslaved people “were among the first to commemorate Memorial Day after the Civil War ended by giving deceased Union soldiers at a Confederate prisoner of war camp an honorable burial and by decorating their graves with flowers and organizing a parade to honor them,” according to the organisation.

The move to censor Mr Kemter’s remarks “constitutes a violation of the ideals and purposes of the American Legion,” according to the statement.

The organisation added: “We are deeply saddened by this and stand in unity and solidarity with the Black community and all peoples of race, color, religion, sex, and gender, so that those who are exclusive of such persons will know that this behavior is not acceptable in The American Legion, in our homes, our hearts, our communities, in private, public, or anywhere.”

Janelle Wong, a professor of American Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, released analysis last week that drew on previously published studies on anti-Asian bias. She found official crime statistics and other studies revealed more than three-quarters of offenders of anti-Asian hate crimes and incidents, from both before and during the pandemic, have been white, contrary to many of the images circulating online....

I would imagine that the ratio of blacks attacking Asian Americans, as opposed to other racial groups attacking them, is about 12% of the total assaults, which is about the percentage of the black population. Same with whites attacking them; more whites do it because there are more whites. If all cars were Toyotas, all car accidents would involve only Toyotas. But if you throw in 12% Nissans, well, there you have it.

... The bill passed unanimously in the Senate on Tuesday.

Senate Bill 475, the "Juneteenth National Independence Day Act," passed 415-14. The bill recognizes June 19, 1865, the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned slavery was ended, as a public holiday. President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had freed all enslaved African Americans in rebel states two and a half years earlier....

The 14 no votes were all from Republican members of Congress. They were:

Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz.

Rep. Scott DesJarlais, R-Tenn.

Rep. Tom Tiffany, R-Wis.

Several of those representatives shared why they were voting against the bill.

Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, told USA TODAY that he thinks there are enough federal holidays.

"We have enough federal holidays right now. I just don't see the reason in doing it," he said. "I don't think it rises to the level I'm going to support it."

Republican Montana Rep. Matt Rosendale released a statement on his vote against S.B. 475.

“Let’s call an ace an ace," Rosendale said. "This is an effort by the Left to create a day out of whole cloth to celebrate identity politics as part of its larger efforts to make Critical Race Theory the reigning ideology of our country. Since I believe in treating everyone equally, regardless of race, and that we should be focused on what unites us rather than our differences, I will vote no."

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., argued that referring to Juneteenth as a national independence day would confuse people.

"I fully support creating a day to celebrate the abolition of slavery, a dark portion of our nation's history," Massie said on the House floor. "However, naming this day 'national independence day' will create confusion and push Americans to pick one of those two days as their independence day based on their racial identity. Why can't we name this 'emancipation day' and come together as Americans and celebrate that day together as Americans?"

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, also objected to the name of the bill.

"Juneteenth should be commemorated as the expression of the realization of the end of slavery in the United States – and I commend those who worked for its passage," Roy said in a statement.

"I could not vote for this bill, however, because the holiday should not be called 'Juneteenth National Independence Day' but rather, 'Juneteenth National Emancipation (or Freedom or otherwise) Day.' This name needlessly divides our nation on a matter that should instead bring us together by creating a separate Independence Day based on the color of one’s skin." ...

This argument makes sense to me, though I suspect other motivations. Plus, there's a semantic question. Blacks gained their legal and political freedom, but to me "independence" is a broader term encompassing economics and social structure, and those took much much longer.

Woman Caught on Camera Spewing Racist Insults at Asian Uber Driver in North Carolina



A white woman was captured on video yelling racial slurs at an Asian Uber driver at a gas station in Charlotte, N.C.

Rude passengers: Outhay Chokbengboun, a 46-year-old Laotian American, said he picked up a small group of passengers who argued with him as he was driving, WSOC reported.

* The group reportedly demanded to go to a different destination than the one they requested via the app.

* Chokbengboun explained that he could not change the location while driving, so he asked them to change the location themselves.

* An argument ensued and escalated into one of the passengers offering to bribe him, and another insulting him.

* One passenger was captured by the driver’s dashcam, saying, “No, we don’t want to drive home with this f***** a******.”

* Chokbengboun then decided to pull into a gas station at East Woodlawn and Park roads to let the passengers out.

* “I don’t understand why people want to do that,” he was quoted as saying. “I’m just trying to do my job, and be on my way, that’s all.”

Viral clip: Chokbengboun said he started recording when a female passenger, identified as Stella Thomas, started berating him with racist insults, according to QC Nerve.

* In the clip, the woman's male friend apologized to Chokbengboun, saying, “I'm going to get these broads out of here, alright? I'm sorry, I am so f****** sorry.”

* Another female passenger is seen urging Thomas to stop yelling at the driver.

* Thomas can be heard yelling, “Go f**k yourself, go back to Asia,” at the driver, adding she was also calling 911.

* The video has since become widely shared on social media.

AB Ludvig Svensson, a company with a local office in Charlotte, confirmed Thomas's involvement in the incident, noting that she has been suspended as they discuss their next course of action.

She'll be fired now that the company has been publicly IDed.
