I think one has to be vaccinated and/or tested in order to fly, especially into Japan. However, it's still possible to have been exposed before it would show up in a test or exposed after testing. That said, I'm with O Really. The 17% of our Olympic athletes that didn't get vaccinated should be watching on TV. Coaches, staff and media, too.neoplacebo wrote: ↑Fri Jul 23, 2021 4:03 pmI'm actually surprised that Japan even let any of these Olympic athletes, coaches, staff, etc in the country without being tested first. Or, did you read it and just not comprehend?A coronavirus variant discovered in Colombia is showing up among patients in South Florida, increasing infections and putting health officials on alert as calls grow louder for unvaccinated individuals to get inoculated.
Carlos Migoya, CEO of Jackson Health System, told WPLG in Miami earlier this week that the B.1.621 variant has accounted for about 10% of coronavirus patients, trailing behind delta, the now dominant variant in the United States that's been ravaging the nation's unvaccinated, and the gamma variant. B.1.621 has yet to receive a Greek-letter designation as more prominent variants have....

The Lambda Variant: What You Should Know And Why Experts Say Not To Panic
The Lambda Variant: What You Should Know And Why Experts Say Not To Panic
While the delta variant of the coronavirus has quickly become the dominant strain in the United States, it's not the only variant circulating in the population.
The lambda variant, first identified in Peru, is also making headlines as it has started to be identified in several states. Houston Methodist Hospital reported its first case of the variant this week. Scientists at the Medical University of South Carolina recently announced they had found the variant in a virus sample taken in April.
According to a database for scientists tracking coronavirus variants, fewer than 700 cases of the lambda variant have been sequenced in the U.S. so far out of more than 34 million coronavirus cases reported to date. But the U.S. has sequenced only a tiny fraction of its cases, so that number does not reflect the actual number of lambda cases in the country.
Fewer than 1% of U.S. cases in the last four weeks have been identified as the lambda variant, according to GISAID, a repository for genome data.

Lambda Variant of COVID-19 Might Be Resistant to Vaccines
Lambda Variant of COVID-19 Might Be Resistant to Vaccines
A COVID-19 variant that proves to be resistant to vaccines keeps medical experts, public health officials, and health care professionals—including infection preventionists—on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic up at nights. There’s no reason to sound the alarm yet, but there may—just may—perhaps be reason to think that there’s a chance that the alarm may have to be sounded at some point about the lambda COVID-19 mutation, or C.37.
A preprint study by investigators in Chile suggests that the mutation, which first surfaced in Peru about a year ago and is highly infectious, may also be able to evade vaccine antibodies.
“Our results indicate that mutations present in the spike protein of the lambda variant of interest confer increased infectivity and immune escape from neutralizing antibodies elicited by CoronaVac,” the study states. CoronaVac is a vaccine manufactured by a Chinese company and that’s used in Peru. The study continues: “These data reinforce the idea that massive vaccination campaigns in countries with high SARS-CoV-2 circulation must be accompanied by strict genomic surveillance allowing the identification of new isolates carrying spike mutations and immunology studies aimed to determine the impact of these mutations in immune escape and vaccines breakthrough.”
Peru has the highest COVID-19 death rate of any country in the world, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center: about 600 for every 100,000 people infected with COVID-19. That’s about twice the amount of Hungary, the country with the next highest COVID-19 death rate. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that the lambda variant has been the COVID carrier in about 81% of infections in Peru since April. The WHO declared the lambda variant a variant of interest last month. The lambda variant has spread to about 30 other countries in the world, including the United Kingdom.

I wonder whether the GQP will change its stance relative to the virus if about forty thousand Republicans are dying daily by October. Or will they stick to their "freedom" position? I consider both scenarios as being quite possible and I really have no preference. Let's just call it "buy the ticket, take the ride."

That high? Goddam, there are pigs flying past my window. The rest of the headline:
Interesting, largely before we became aware of how dire the Delta variant would be.as do a strong majority of Americans, a new poll shows
More than four-in-10 Republicans (45%) support a universal COVID-19 vaccine mandate, according to a new survey conducted by The COVID States Project.
The survey also found that a strong majority of Americans (64%) would support a universal vaccine mandate across the US. Most Americans (70%) supported a vaccine requirement for getting on a plane, as well as requiring one for allowing children to go back to school (61%), and mandating one for college students to go back to university (66%).
Republicans were the only subgroup in which a majority did not support a universal mandate. Comparatively, 84% of Democrats support a universal mandate, the poll showed.
The survey of 20,669 people was conducted across all 50 states and Washington, DC, from June 9 to July 7.
Hundreds of thousands would have been saved if Repug leaders had been responsible sooner. Should we applaud the holdouts for how many RepuQs they are getting killed?Polling has consistently shown that Republican voters are among the most hesitant Americans when it comes to getting vaccinated. Meanwhile, GOP politicians in Washington continue to push misinformation on vaccines, as they rail against mask mandates and other restrictions. But a number of GOP governors, as well as some prominent Republicans in Washington like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, have recently ramped up efforts to urge people to get vaccinated - breaking from the vaccine skeptics in their party.
The people are way ahead of you, pols. Mandates now!A universal mandate has not been proposed by leaders at the federal or state level, but there have been more specific requirements issued at various levels. But the Biden administration on Thursday did issue new rules for federal workers attest to their vaccination status or submit to testing and other measures. The Pentagon said members of the military would be subject to the same protocols....

Re: Coronavirus
Otoh, Johnson being a johnson, again:

Sen. Johnson Opposes Vaccine Mandate Unless Virus is ‘Incredibly Deadly.’ Covid Has Killed 613,000 Americans So Far
Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) said he’s against a vaccine mandate “unless there’s some incredibly deadly disease.” The senator also insisted that he is not downplaying the virus and is aware that the U.S. has “had 600,000 excess deaths over the last year.” ...
Johnson then spread disinformation about the death rates of influenza as compared to the coronavirus.
“We don’t know the final infection-fatality rate, but right now it’s looking like it’s not going to be much more than double a bad season of flu,” Johnson said.
But according to a report this week from Johns Hopkins Medicine, health experts say that “at present, [the Covid mortality rate] is thought to be substantially higher (possibly 10 times or more) than that of most strains of the flu.”
Johnson said he’s not downplaying the virus, but that is a lie. Last year, the senator reacted to businesses closing down because of rising pandemic death rates by saying, “We don’t shut down our economy because tens of thousands of people die on the highways.”
In April, the Trump sycophant senator railed against the efforts to get Americans vaccinated, suggesting that there are conspiratorial motives at play. Johnson said that he saw “no reason to be pushing vaccines on people,” adding that the “big push to make sure everybody gets the vaccine” made him “highly suspicious.”
And in June, Johnson was suspended from YouTube for one week after his account added a video of the senator spreading disinformation about the virus....

It's legal and the majority of the country can't avoid one or more of the entities.

Employees, yes, as long as they leave limited medical/religious exception - which don't have to be absolute. Customers - not so clear yet. But the ever-clever DeSantis is leading in getting that issue to court, and I'm guessing he'll lose and businesses will be able to legally limit customers to the vaccinated or certainly give them better stuff. I'm all for it.
