In Memoriam

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

That's remarkable in itself. But I'm pretty sure there is some doubt about Richards.

If Keith is still smoking, he's still alive.

Might be he was blessed with superior genes.

To be honest, I've always been more of a Beatles fan than a Stones fan. I do like the Stones' music, but the Beatles were always more "musical" and tempered, IMHO. Still, there's nothing quite like "Satisfaction" to get a party going.

Stones had some good music. And put on a great show. I saw them on what was supposed to be their "farewell" tour in, I think, 1989. The boys would have been in their 40's and totally lit the stadium. I also remember seeing an interview with Mick when he said, "well, I hope to hell I'm not still singing 'Satisfaction' when I'm 40."

Saw the Stones a couple of times. The first was the Somegirls tour on a 90° day in Soldier Field in Chicago. Journey opened for them and kicked ass. The Stones were good and Mick sprayed the crowd with a firehose.

July 8, 1978

The Stones headline for the first time at Soldier Field. The stadium is filled on a steamy summer day with 80,000 fans, with opening acts Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Peter Tosh and Journey, featuring new vocalist Steve Perry. The Stones set list includes most of the songs on the quintet's latest release, "Some Girls." Later that night Jagger drops in on a Lefty Dizz set at Kingston Mines.

Yeah, I was in that mess.

The second time I saw them was indoors at a 15,000 seat venue. I was on the main floor by the mixing booth and Jagger took a crowd stroll to the booth. Guess I was about 20 feet from him, standing on our chairs and looking down his throat. His makeup was running and I remember thinking he looks like shit.

He was also wearing a Walter Payton jersey.

They used to play clubs when they were in town.

Well, I was more into classical music performances in my youth. Or folk music. Or Jazz. Don't think I ever saw the Stones live. And other rock groups, I know I attended some concerts but frankly I'd have to think a bit to remember them now.

Joan Baez gave good concerts. So did (I think!) Judy Collins. Pete Seeger. David Wilcox. The rest is sort of a blur.

Back in 77 they played at a club in Canada named El Mocambo, their first live club date in 14 years. There was no publicity for it other than one of those portable rolling signs that can be placed in front of a business. They billed themselves as "The Cockroaches" but on the sign out front it said "Rolling Stones" and tickets were something like ten dollars. Sure wish I could have been there. Probably less than two or three hundred in attendance.

Can't believe there were shows at all.
The first show apparently went pretty badly. Keith Richards found out just before going on stage that his two-month old baby had died of natural causes. He also had been arrested in Canada a few days earlier for drug possession, and it looked like he could serve a long prison sentence. (He eventually wiggled out of it.) Also, there were lots of problems with the recording of the show for the live album.

Beatles were great creative musicians, but never were much in concert. Lady O v.1 saw their NY concert in Shea Stadium - all 20 minutes of it, with sucky sound and rough edges. But later on when McCartney was touring, even after "Wings", he put on great arena concerts.

In their defense, the audio technology was shit in those days and no one could hear anything with thousands of teen girls screaming, yelling and passing out all around them.

Before my time, but look at this shitty set up in Chicago.

Oh, you knew Lady O v.1? She would have been about 14 at the time. She also saw one of the few Monkees concerts with Jimi Hendrix opening. This one in Miami in July '67.

Was Hendrix booed off the stage for that one too?
