Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Yeah, I was shocked to see this. I expect GQP backlash. The criminally insane FL governor has given two county school boards 48 hours to rescind their mask mandates. They say they will not do so.
Texas town closed due to COVID: In Iraan, nearly half its people hit by COVID-19

Breaking: Criminally insane TX Governor Abbott has issued an order banning towns from closing.

The article - (119 people were tested - 50 tested positive during a two week August span, 25% of school staff and 16% of the students were either infected with or exposed to the coronavirus.

The headline - ( Nearly half)

I'd say that exposure IS a hit. It causes fear and leads to quarantines. Anyhow, the headline is not referring to the school numbers but rather to:
According to Iraan General Hospital CEO Jason Rybolt, 119 people were tested for the virus and 50 tested positive during a two week August span – a 42% positivity rate.
Otoh, is 42% "nearly half"? Maybe not. Also, "nearly half" of those tested is not "nearly half" of the town, but I'll cut the headline editor some slack on that one.

Regardless, the point is that the town is being fucked up by COVID-19, whatever the exact numbers. I think that much is accurate.

I meant more - there's no need to sensationalize the already sensational. To me he diminishes his message by failing to back up his "half".

He could have spent more effort explaining the town. He said there were 1,200 people, but didn't describe the town or surrounding area, except to say that ICU was over 100 miles away and then quoted the local hospital CEO.

Just being picky - too many headlines and not enough substance.

It's a bit confusing writing. I THINK it means that the closest AVAILABLE ICU beds are at least 100 miles away.

We're not told the vaccination rate, but I'm guessing that it's low. I was expecting to find that the town is majority Latino and poor, which I'm a bit more understanding of, but nope. It's 92% White, "Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 36.51% of the population," and while the median household income is not huge, its poverty rate is quite low.

My main point was not to generate sympathy, but rather to highlight what Governor Abbott and other GQP policy inevitably leads to.

Let's make that daily tests - up the nose with a rubber hose. Better still, if they won't take the vax, spray a heavy dose of covid up their nose and send them home.

Seems like this round of covid is way worse than the last, as even a bunch of higher profile people are getting wrecked and killed by the illness. Also, way more people I know are getting sick. So far two people I know have had their children catch covid after beginning school last week.

I remember reading that the second wave of the Spanish flu was worse than the first. I guess that's where we're at now with covid.

I had forgotten that. It happened a lot quicker in 1918, only six months between the first and second wave, mostly attributed to troop movements and lack of press reports due to the war effort. A lot more contagious and deadly too.

Didn't people flip their shit about the flu vaccine when it first came out as well? I vaguely remember the same thing happening, just not to this extent since the internet and social media were still coming of age back then.

Not that I recall, but the shots date back to the 1930s and didn't become a thang till the 70s.

I've never had one, with an average 30% or so efficacy why bother.

It's been down to 30% occasionally, but over time it's been more like 50%. And what that means is that out of a given population, there will be twice as many unvaccinated people get the flu as vaccinated. Not great, true, but it's a pretty good improvement of odds when the only personal investment is 5-10 minutes out of a Walgreen trip you're making anyway.

To be honest, I can't remember the last time I had the flu. I've had some head colds and such but not a full-blown flu.

I get the flu shot everywhere because fuck that noise, I hate having the flu. If I'm taking off work because I feel like shit it better be because I partied my ass off the night before and not because someone slobbered on my face and gave me the flu.

Personal health/behaviour habits help too, of course. If you, like us, tend to avoid people like the plague-carriers they are, and don't have any petri-dish kids running around, you're not likely to catch much. But I like vaccines and we've got them for most everything you can - tetanus, shingles, pneumonia, yada.

I'm certainly not anti vaccination per se and I've had all the typical childhood ones and a tetanus shot but I generally don't go out of my way to get them. Having said that, a shingles vaccination will be in my future, my stepfather had them and it was awful.
