What are you watching?

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Somebody, and it might have been I, said you can't successfully connect a roku to an ancient vcr. We'll see.
As everything is on demand why would anyone want to?

It's not an "ancient VCR".

How many times will I have to repeat that?

Update: the tiny manual that came with the gizmo indicate it should work after all. However, the gizmo itself is labelled the opposite. This just might be a manufacturing error or they packaged the wrong device with the carton (which indicate the proper operation) and the tiny manual (which also indicates the proper operation).

So I won't fuss with it tonight; I will see mañana if it works as advertised.

On demand? That's nice. But I also want a local copy.

Maybe I misunderstood. I thought you said it was a combo DVD/VCR player. The last one of those was made in 2016, most manufacturers stopped making them at least 5 years before that. I stand by my characterization of "ancient."

Defensive, aren’t you? There you go patronizing O Really again  . Idk enough about the age or features of your "DVDR/VCR" to form my own opinion, but in techspeak it may indeed be "ancient" and may fit:
3 : having the qualities of age or long existence: such as
...
b : old-fashioned, antique
That's how it goes with words that are so subjective.

OK fine. How about "obsolete"?

"no longer produced or used; out of date."

One rogue user somewhere doth not make a rotary phone less obsolete.

Examples of obsolete electronics.

My windows 95 computer still boots up and runs and does everything it did 25 years ago, except it's completely useless in today's world.

Mt CRT TV still works but I had to get that converter gizmo to get any programming. I could still use it with my VCR but I can't get any current content.

That's a fun list. Reads better from the source link.
Don't tell neoplacebo that "vacuum tube" is on the list.

I found the listing of CD's of personal interest. When we moved into the coach, I went through the collection of CD's, dumped a bunch and downloaded the ones I wanted to keep to be managed by Windows Media Player. The advantage over keeping plastic ones, in addition to space, is better cataloguing, easier access, and quick playlists. BUT - CD's are way better than any other alternative to get audio books from the library. If you access the online library, you can keep the books only a couple of weeks, but if you check out the CD's, rip to your computer, you can keep them as long as you like. I've got my own library of about 60 books, usually dump one after I've read it, add in others as is convenient. Download to my phone to listen.

That's one possibility. $10/month isn't a lot, but libraries are free. But if my CD drive crashes or they quit having them in the library, that's a good option. Thanks.

goldenaudiobooks looks pretty cool. Decent books included in the free list, and easy to use. Looks like it doesn't remember where you were if you leave the site, but certainly well worth the free price.

If you download a mp3 audiobook from my county library (and probably all libraries) and transfer it to a mp 3 player it loses licensing data and can be kept for years.

Oh, I haven't made a VHS, Beta, or Hi-8 tape recording in at least 15 years. I have made, and still continue to make, DVD recordings off the excellent digital TV broadcast signals in this area. The only CRT TV I have was retired about 15 years or more ago. Still have it, but haven't fired it up in a long time. The only tube type electronics I have are indeed antique, and also are rarely if ever fired up. Even have a wonderful crank Victrola, and a nice collection of vintage 78's for that. So sue me.

I bet that box of lettuce is pretty ripe. Or it could be bananas. Good thing it's tilted to drain the sludge.
