Update: the tiny manual that came with the gizmo indicate it should work after all. However, the gizmo itself is labelled the opposite. This just might be a manufacturing error or they packaged the wrong device with the carton (which indicate the proper operation) and the tiny manual (which also indicates the proper operation).

So I won't fuss with it tonight; I will see mañana if it works as advertised.

Maybe I misunderstood. I thought you said it was a combo DVD/VCR player. The last one of those was made in 2016, most manufacturers stopped making them at least 5 years before that. I stand by my characterization of "ancient."

My windows 95 computer still boots up and runs and does everything it did 25 years ago, except it's completely useless in today's world.


Mt CRT TV still works but I had to get that converter gizmo to get any programming. I could still use it with my VCR but I can't get any current content.

I found the listing of CD's of personal interest. When we moved into the coach, I went through the collection of CD's, dumped a bunch and downloaded the ones I wanted to keep to be managed by Windows Media Player. The advantage over keeping plastic ones, in addition to space, is better cataloguing, easier access, and quick playlists. BUT - CD's are way better than any other alternative to get audio books from the library. If you access the online library, you can keep the books only a couple of weeks, but if you check out the CD's, rip to your computer, you can keep them as long as you like. I've got my own library of about 60 books, usually dump one after I've read it, add in others as is convenient. Download to my phone to listen.

That's one possibility. $10/month isn't a lot, but libraries are free. But if my CD drive crashes or they quit having them in the library, that's a good option. Thanks.

Oh, I haven't made a VHS, Beta, or Hi-8 tape recording in at least 15 years. I have made, and still continue to make, DVD recordings off the excellent digital TV broadcast signals in this area. The only CRT TV I have was retired about 15 years or more ago. Still have it, but haven't fired it up in a long time. The only tube type electronics I have are indeed antique, and also are rarely if ever fired up. Even have a wonderful crank Victrola, and a nice collection of vintage 78's for that. So sue me.
