It's great that he could play, but I'm not so sure he should've.
Looks like he has tons of healthcare pros and family to advise him, whether he's heeding them or not. Just making it to the NFL will make it monetarily worth it. If he's done it for what turns out to be just backup college play, I agree with you.

I didn't write this, but I could have:
Miami: The only thought a Miami fan should have had after watching that 44-13 loss to Alabama is, “Why did we agree to play this game?” ...
I think it makes a statement to play Alabama and Georgia every year and an even bigger statement to beat Alabama and Georgia in regular season play.

Maybe I didn't understand billy.p's comment. I don't think Miami has played Alabama since 1990, and I don't remember (not that I would) when they played and beat AL and GA in the same year. If they did, it would have been back before the Big East days in a time when the U was referred to as, for example, "perennial national powerhouse" etc. and other terms not used so much lately.

I don't understand it, either. Maybe it's a reference to Auburn. Idk when it last beat Alabama and Georgia in regular season play.

Maybe he's referring to the 2017 season. I think Auburn beat Alabama and split with two games against Georgia. Wasn't that also when they got beat by UCF? Other than by hard-core Auburn fans, which of those three games does everybody else remember?

Billy.p seems to value being drubbed by an Alabama much higher than by those who vote on rankings or potential playoff spots. Certainly in a perfect-ish system, the idea of "you gotta beat the best to be the best" has merit. In the current system, not so much.

I defer to the specifics. In college ball you gotta have depth or luck to make it through a tough schedule. Auburn didn't have the depth that year and finished with a team that couldn't have made the top 20 - in other words - a typical ucf caliber opponent.

Ah. 0-1 Clemson is AP #6 after losing to #2 GA 3-10, the only team with a loss in the top 17.
https://www.espn.com/college-football/rankings

Also:
0-1 #18 Wisconsin lost to #11 Penn State 10-16.
0-1 #22 Miami lost big to #1 Alabama 13-44. Getting drubbed by Alabama counts for a little, I guess.
0-1 now #24 North Carolina lost to formerly unranked #19 Virginia Tech 10-17. What was UNC doing ranked at Preseason #10 anyhow?

Fwiw, 1-0 Auburn is up from unranked to #25 after running up the score on the Mid-American Conference’s Akron Zips.

Dropped from rankings: LSU 16, Indiana 17, Washington 20, Louisiana 23

FCS Montana (1-0) jumped from #9 to #4 after beating BCS #20 Washington.

They wuz sittin' around drinkin' one night and said, "Hey, let's rank the 'Heels in the top ten. Ya think anybody will notice?" I simply said that the Auburn team that lost to Georgia and ucf was not the same team that delivered a beat down on Georgia and went undefeated in the regular season. We lost our key offensive and defensive players in the last regular season game. The swing from giving Georgia a beat down to receiving one from Georgia 2 weeks later is reasonable proof that we were no longer even a top ten team in either of our post season play.
It was unfortunate that the big ten ref decided not to follow officiating regulations and blew a dead ball whistle during an easy touchdown run. Oh well, some of us accept that the ucfers 1 or 2 game schedule isn't enough for anything more than a Participation Trophy - hey, didn't they give themselves a Trophy to take home and show mom?

I don't think either of us are arguing with you after all these years. We were just confused by the connection to O Really's lamenting Miami. I still am.

I think that the UCF Knights value their 2018 Peach Bowl trophy most of all :P . Too bad you don't play FSU this year. It might have been a shot at revenge.

At some point, you’d think people would get the hint here. Who has it turned out well for to play Alabama in a neutral site season opener? Whether it’s Louisville, Southern Cal, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech or whatever opponent you can come up with, the track record is clear. You’re not going to win. You’ll likely get embarrassed. Or, in the worst-case scenario, it might just break your entire program the way it did for Florida State in 2017.

Sure, the money and the TV time slot are great. But is it really worth it? An offseason of top-10 potential for Miami has now been reduced to the knowledge that it wouldn’t come close to beating Alabama if they played 1,000 times. Doesn't exactly fire you up for the next 11 games, does it?

Btw, OR vs OH St is a great game with 7 min left (Fox). OR 35, OH St 28. Go Ducks!
Edit: Injury depleted #12 OR 35, #3 OH St 28. What a great day in college football! With UCLA > LSU last week the Pac12 is on a roll.
Pitt 41, TN 34 with 10 min left (ESPN). Go Panthers!
Pitt 41, TN 34.
SC 17, E Carolina 17 with 5 min left (ESPN2). Go E Carolina!
SC 20, E Carolina 17 on a walkoff FG.

Auburn ran up the score for the 2nd week in a row, this time on FCS Alabama State 62-0.

So I was still thinking about billy.p's view on scheduling, and it seems to me that scheduling a few patsies like Georgia State and Howard and Akron is not an unreasonable part of a broad strategy. Now if your goal is to prove that you're the best team in the land, you might have to play all the teams that are close to your greatness. But for most teams, that will be a failing approach, because if you're always playing teams approximating your quality, you're bound to lose at least a fourth of them most years. On the other hand, if your strategy is to win championships, you've got at least two reasonable approaches: (1) figure that you'll get better if you play tough games early in the season; or, (2) figure you'll be better off treating early games as high level scrimmages and build a record with healthy players. Ultimately, if the goal is to compete for championships, you gotta have wins. Macho by itself won't do it.

Not bitter about the game, the blown calls and the bullshit media acting like ucf had beat a top 10 and even #1 team are long in the past. I called the same bs on bosie when they were claiming a playoff spot after playing 1 decent game. My gripe has nothing to do with that one game, it's with a system that gives credence to the loudest voice in the room.

Greatly expanding play-offs would help. A computer program that really took an evolving strength of schedule into account each week would also help motivate some of these teams to schedule tougher opponents.
