Idaho story: Back in the summer, I was helping SIL with a project that he needed some materials from Lowe's. The two Lowe's stores in Spokane didn't have what he needed, so we ventured off to Coeur D'Alene. The CDA store had an interesting set-up where you can drive into the lumber section, load your truck, and drive out. The entry has a flip-down gate and a greeter type person. On the way out, you have to show your receipt to the greeter type person. Once in the lineup, it's not easy to turn back around if you don't have your receipt for some reason. SIL asked the guy what they do if somebody doesn't have their receipt. He said usually they ask them to pull to the side and look for it, go back in for it, or whatever - except, he said, "for the ones with the AR-15's and we just let them through." We all chuckled over an Idaho joke. But he continued, "yeah, sounds funny now, but it's not that unusual for somebody to come through with a gun and say they ain't gonna show no receipt. Managers tell us to just let them cruise - they probably bought their stuff they just don't like authority."

There are those, and some would say let'em go. You can spend time in the Spokane immediate metro (generally Spokane, Spokane Valley, Liberty Lake) area and not constantly feel like you're in the land of loons, but it's a bubble. Out in the county and all the way down to Walla-Walla/Tri Cities, and all across eastern Oregon, it's pretty much Road Warrior land. And in the time we've been coming through and staying around there, it's gotten worse.

I do understand why they keep elected that moon-drooling Cathy McMorris Rogers, though. When she's running, and in her communications in the district, she comes across as a very reasonable person, keeping away from the lightning rod issues, talking about "working for veterans" and "bringing jobs to Eastern Washington", "protecting against wildfires and supporting families," and "making sure Eastern Washington has a strong voice (in DC)" She doesn't do immigration (her farmer constituents love them some Mexican workers). Looking at her slick website doesn't turn up much craziness.
