The Global Warming thread.

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Irony. Record lows out west, record highs in the Great Lakes, record temps in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic complete with algae blooms killing fish going along with hurricanes.

Humans sure do know how to eff up a planet.
I thought the West had mostly been seeing 'heat dome' record highs, along with drought. Has it been getting cold, too?
Sorry, I was talking about water levels and water temperatures.
Aren't water temperatures high out west? I think they're having to sell sushi as cooked fish.
Oh yeah, the salmon are poaching themselves, the big problem is all the dill has wilted.
:D It's convenient that they get smoked while being transported from stream to market.

Actually the ocean waters off the US pacific coast are generally a lot colder than those on the east coast.

Likely due to the steep drop-off of the ocean floor off the west coast, and the phenomenon known as upwelling, which brings cold waters up to the surface pretty much along the entire coast.

There have been record air temp highs in Oregon and Washington state, and inland in most of California, but so far the temps in this area (SF Bay Area) have been relatively cool. Our heat wave here generally is in late August - early September.

The question is not east vs west coast waters, but rather 2021 west coast waters vs previous years. I know that some immediate coastal sea life has suffered, but am not sure about offshore temps.

The main reason for the difference in east and west coast water temperatures is the north traveling Gulf Stream and south traveling California Current, not "upwelling".

Also, GoCubsGo and I were including lake and stream waters in our somewhat tongue-in-cheek discussion. That is where western waters are really suffering.

For The First Time In Recorded History, Smoke From Wildfires Reaches The North Pole

This cannot be good.

Image
Smoke from wildfires raging in Russia has reached the North Pole for the first time in recorded history. Data captured by satellites flying over the region revealed Friday show just how much smoke is being produced from the hundreds of forest fires in Siberia's Sakha Republic and just how far that smoke is spreading, NASA said in a release issued over the weekend.

Smoke blankets the sky for about 2,000 miles from east to west and 2,500 miles north to south, the report noted. Smoke from those fires has even been recorded as having traveled more than 1,864 miles to reach the North Pole — an unprecedented distance.

Smoke from the fires also stretched over 1,200 miles on Wednesday to reach all the way to Mongolia, NASA stated. Ulan Bator, the capital city of Mongolia, and some northern and central regions were blanketed in "white smoke," China's Xinhua news agency reported. The smoke was also visible in Canada, some western regions of Greenland, and Nunavut, a Canadian territory.

The wildfires in Siberia are already an out-of-the-ordinary occurrence. The Sakha Republic, also known as Yakutia, is covered by boreal, or snow, forest, and its northern region is one of the coldest places on the planet, according to the NASA report. However, the area has been experiencing record high temperatures recently. In June, some parts reached a ground temperature of 118 degrees Fahrenheit and an air temperature of 89.4 degrees, according to Arctic Today.
And Rudolph is not happy about this, I would imagine.

Not mentioned in the article: Dark ash settling on the white snow and ice will increase heating and melting. Yet another negative feedback loop.

Yeah. Not gonna go there.

As tempting as it might be.

Imagine what a real infrastructure bill could do.

Meanwhile most US trains run on polluting fossil fuel diesel.

And they are slow.

When I lived in Japan, there was a train station within walking distance of just about anywhere in the country. I've never been to Europe but their public transportation system is also very good from what I know of it.

I remember when our conservative friends claimed that removing lead from paint would be the end of truly white paint, but in fact it just keeps getting whiter.

... The paint reflects 98.1% of solar radiation while also emitting infrared heat. Because the paint absorbs less heat from the sun than it emits, a surface coated with this paint is cooled below the surrounding temperature without consuming power.

Using this new paint to cover a roof area of about 1,000 square feet could result in a cooling power of 10 kilowatts. “That’s more powerful than the air conditioners used by most houses,” Ruan said....

Are you sure this isn't another example "white savior" paint.

That, or just go to a beach that doesn't have oil and sit in the sun on a day it's not obscured by smoke. Or take a hike in a mountain area that hasn't burned yet. And stay away from most of the covid-carrying moon-droolers.
