Yes, I heard all about the rain from my brother. He went to college up there, come down here to attend law school, lived here for a few years, then went back up there and eventually got hitched. Not necessarily in that order.

What's that the Irish say?

"It's a soft rain" ...

Perhaps some of us should all get together and buy this TN town that's for sale. I will establish our fleet on the creek that comes with it.

No problem. Plus I feel certain we could annex those other areas shown near the town and become a regular metropolis. I do have a strange feeling about the place, though. I notice in all the photos there's no people, cars on the road, or animals at all. The whole thing could be a vile setup.

I'm out. $700+K for 7 acres "50 miles south of Nashville" sounds a bit steep. For that sort of money you could get a nice 2BR condo in my part of California, or a rotted fixer upper in Ulysses'.

I expect you to capture and convert downstream communities while stomping any heretics, upstream ones if we find the money for engines.

I have toyed with the idea of selling this million dollar not-a-mansion and relocating to a Good Old Boy state.

So far, have successfully suppressed these thoughts.

Plus I have too many cars and motorcycles to make the move affordable.

And then there's the problem of trying to live in a Good Old Boy state.

It used to be that you could live very happily in a "Good Old Boy" state as long as you lived in certain cities or areas. But the radical repuQ's that used to claim to be in favor of "small localized gummint" now regularly legislates right wing requirements on local cities. Florida, for example, used to have GOB and non-GOB areas, but since DeSantis has been there, the entire state is negatively affected by his lunacy. I'd suggest you continue to vigorously suppress those thoughts.

So we've been two days cruising down the 101 on Oregon Coast. Views and scenery are magnificent, and our last 40 mile today from Newport to Florence is supposedly the most scenic of the whole coast. Sure would be nice if it weren't dark gray and raining most of the time. Stormy off shore bringing in huge (10-15ft) waves crashing in on the rocks and cliffs. We're where the huge sand dunes are and if we get a day it's not raining we'll either take a tour or rent an ATV. Did I mention it's raining? We'll be here about a week and the forecast is for rain every day. Wesen weather.

I thought Washington had a lot of places that were pronounced nowhere near the way they are spelled. Making lots of opportunities for non-locals to provide entertainment for the locals. Fortunately, I have Seattle girl Lady O to tell me that "Sequim" is pronounced "Squim", that "Puyallop" is "Pew-allop" and "Chehalis" is pronounced with a long "a".

But there is a lot of Oregon-speak, too. I now know that "Yachats" is "Yah-hots", "Willamette" is "Wil-LAM-ut" and "Siskiyou" is for some reason "Siuslaw" is for some reason "Si-OO-slaw." We're at Heceda Beach ("Heh-SEE-da"). We didn't have to deal with all this when we only stayed in Bend.

Also, the local natives don't seem to have a word for "sun" but have 20 names for rain.

I recently read a book about Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, Protestant missionaries in the 1840's in Oregon. He was also a doctor, or what passed for one back then. Anyway, they and their entourage came west to "civilize" the Indians.....Cayuse, Nez Perce, and another tribe I forget. They lived with the Cayuse but the Indians killed both of them and some other whites after about half the tribe died from some white man disease. They started to believe Whitman was trying to kill them. And it was their own custom to kill a bogus medicine man even if he was a tribe member if his medicine didn't take. After this "massacre" the other missionaries invented a legend about Whitman....how he supposedly rode all the way to Washington DC to convince the president to seize the Oregon Territory before the British did. What he really went east for, to New York, was to save his own job as a missionary because he'd only converted a few Indians to Christianity and the church was about to fire him. Anyway, the legend and the lie was promoted extensively and became old west lore well into the 20th century.....even was in school history books. There's a Whitman College there still, and a historical site Whitman Mission. The college eventually moved a statue of Whitman from a prominent place on campus to an out of the way place near railroad tracks. But it's generally accepted that if not for Whitman, the hundreds of thousands of white settlers that followed the Oregon Trail west would not have done so without Whitman's legend and lie. The whole thing reminded me of trump.....lying, manipulating, using religion as a crutch, etc. Except nobody killed trump. Then I cried.

Could be some of both, I guess, but mostly I was just kidding. Not about the non-intuitive pronunciations though. And when you think you can figure one out, like Langlois - surely from French - nope, it's Lang-lo-is just like spelled in English.

But did it rain any?? :angry-cussing: ;)
I've been doing some traveling myself; haven't got to the west coast yet, I've seen plenty of it already in my time.
My meanderings have been on no particular itinerary, just been having some
"Me and You and A Dog Named Boo" moments. I'm not telling where I've been, I've just been; us and the rain
and the drought, and the smoke!

Enjoy your travels! What are you traveling in? And hopefully you aren't taking the "Boo" part about "living off the land" seriously.

Glad you liked it. The book was pretty fascinating. And with any luck my favorite obituary will appear sometime in the next 36 months. Oh, and the current remnants of the Cayuse tribe still have a fine hatred of Whitman.

I like to see local TV news and weather people as we travel. There's a big difference in what you find in Casper WY and what you find in Southern California or some other big markets. But I think the Oregon weather chicks have the easiest job on TV. "For today you can expect rain in the morning, with showers expected for the afternoon and evening, becoming rain again tonight. For the morning commute there will be rain, but by the afternoon commute there will be rain. Rain continues tomorrow and for the coming weekend there will be rain."
