Well, if I really expected a windshield breaking swirl of heavy crap to come in, we'd move entirely. But if you had to make such a choice, pointing toward the wind would be better. Being safety glass, nothing short of a big branch or a small cow flying into it is going to break it completely out. Replacing a windshield is 100% covered in insurance, and it's not a huge job to get it done. Guys show up, climb around and grunt for about an hour, and leave with your broken one in their truck. Replacing the back, however, is way worse. The entire panel is one big piece of fibreglass, and then there's the engine compartment. Also, all the vents, covers, etc. on the roof are designed to be facing forward into the wind as you drive.

Hope you like it. It was a really fascinating historical tale. The author has written a couple of others. One is about the Columbia River that runs from British Columbia to the Pacific in Oregon and another is about a North Korean who escaped from a detention camp.

We didn't set out with a plan to follow Lewis and Clark's expedition, nor to follow the Columbia particularly, but over a few years we've seen many parts of both. It was pretty cool a couple of weeks ago to be at the mouth of the Columbia, looking at what is called the "bar" where the river and the sea actually meet and is particularly hazardous for boats/ships of all sizes. We visited Lewis and Clark's last encampment before they began their return trip. We walked out to the end of the South Jetty and then drove over the big-ass bridge to the Washington side and viewed the bar from the Cape Disappointment lighthouse. All worth putting up with the rain to see.

From that, one would surely think Oakland is a city of crime, shootings, assaults, garbage piled on streets ... did I mention shootings?

So are the stations biased because they're from across the Bay? Or is it just a "if it bleeds it leads" habit that most all stations have now? Or is Oakland really a scary place?

Parts of it, depending on what one is up to. I recently looked it up, Oakland is not the worst in CA for murder rate, but it's in the top 5.
