So no, Oakland is not all that scary a place; like any major US city it depends on where you go.
Or maybe it is.
Oakland is Number 1 when it comes to having the highest overall crime rate in the state, and is the eighth-largest city in California. It serves as a major trade center for the Bay Area, is the busiest port for San Francisco Bay. Unfortunately, the crime rate here is one of the worst in the state, making Oakland safer than only 1% (that’s a rate of 1 out of 100 according to Neighborhood Scout.com) of the cities in the United States. Violent crimes are 238% higher than the California average and 287% higher than the national average, while property crimes are 124% higher than the state’s average. Your chances of becoming a victim here are close to 1 in 14, and there are some 20 crimes per 100,000 persons that occur in the city every day.
Your post includes a lot of "here" words. Aren't you still up around Crescent City? I had no idea it was such a crime capitol!

Santa Rosa. But the quote clearly starts out with "Oakland." I've got nothing against Oakland - I just noticed that a lot of crime got reported there and wondered if it was reasonably accurate or somewhat exaggerated for sensationalism. Looks like it's not exaggerated, at least not much.

Hmm. Santa Rosa? I think I heard on the local news this evening about some horrific crime in Santa Rosa... Had I known you were there, I'd have remembered more details.

It was clear to me that "here" (twice, not "a lot") referred to Oakland, not the O Really's exact locale.

Lotta crime in NorCal, apparently.

Not really. And Oakland isn't even on the list of the 10 most dangerous cities in the USA, from 1 to 10:

Detroit, MI
Memphis, TN
Birmingham, AL
Baltimore, MD
St. Louis, MO
Kansas City, MO
Cleveland, OH
Little Rock, AR
Milwaukee, WI
Stockton, CA

Depends on the source and methodology. This one says that Oakland is the 5th "Most Dangerous Cities In The United States For 2021":
https://www.roadsnacks.net/most-dangerous-cities/

As with your list, these do not put Oakland in the top 10:
https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/blog/top100dangerous
https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/the-mo ... merica/40/
https://www.alarms.org/top-100-most-dan ... n-america/

Go figure.

This time of year, I would think most all the grapes have been harvested, crushed, and are fermenting in their own juices to make lovely wine.

Or grape juice/jam/preserves.

Well wha-tever. None of them claim to be the "safest town in California" like Danville does. Of course, Danville just got hit with the earthquake du jour. Go figure.

Yeah, and leaving vinyards full of very colorful fall-tinted leaves.

Actually I still have edible grapes on my backyard trellis. Probably should harvest before the birds decimate them.

Yes, I felt that quake here. I was supposed to be in Danville for a museum event but didn't go. It was supposed to start at 11:30 am. The quake hit at 11:43 am. Probably little to no damage or safety concerns, but still. The bigger threat is from the Hayward fault, which runs about a mile to the east of here. And, like the San Andreas, it's overdue for a major.

Such fun.

My earthquake insurance costs as much if not more than the homeowners insurance. I didn't have it for about 10 years, but a couple years ago I started it up again because... premonition. In case anyone didn't know, most homeowners insurance, the minimum required by mortgage lenders, doesn't include earthquake coverage.

A major quake would just put the cherry on top of the pandemic sundae.

 He's currently sleeping the sleep of the cheap. We can expect continuance of the endless gibberish, false equivalency, and outstanding ability to misinterpret or take things out of context somewhere around 3pm EST. Yesterday I predicted he'd be back around noon his time and was proven to be off by just 18 minutes. Not sure I can improve on that estimate but will predict 3:23 for today.
