Idiot box thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Accepted. What I posted was not as absolutist as what Useless posted. All it takes is tweaks at the margins. That said, he is correct about some of the "reality" shows, as has been exposed by many in the know.
The term "reality" show started with stuff like MTV's "Real World" and morphed into Kardashians, "Real Housewives", Honey BooBoo, Duck people, Osbournes, etc. Lots of unreality there. "Survivor" is more of a competition show and probably shouldn't be glomped in with "reality." Same for "Big Brother", the former "Fear Factor", and even "American Ninja Warrior." In ANW, they like to show backstories, competitors who overcame adversity or whatever, and the actual broadcast isn't live so the may arrange the players in a more dramatic order, but bottom line, those are some fantastic real athletes in a real competition.
Hell, I'm surprised that the "reality" concept hasn't followed its natural progression and ultimate end state.....something akin to the shit the Romans staged in the Coliseum where Christians fight lions or slaves fight each other as well as animals. If trump becomes president again in 24, I predict those type shows will swiftly be initiated.

Well, the NFL has actually gone more in the direction of moderation with regard to danger and risk. There are no more little leather helmets, pads are much more effective, the establishment of targeting penalties, etc.

They have, but I wonder about effectiveness. Are concussions down? What are the trends for other injuries? Are retirees healthier?

No idea. Back in the old days of NFL I doubt they paid much attention to long term medical issues or hazards of playing the game. I can remember when helmets had only a single bar in front of the face or maybe a "single double" bar. But back then, about half the adult population smoked cigarettes. Cars didn't have seat belts. Dashboards were metal. Things, as well as concerns, change.

Dancing with the Stars (American season 30)

I haven't been watching, but I still have opinions. ;)

Olivia Jade was eliminated on November 8. I ain't crying.
Suni Lee was eliminated on November 15. Awww, and a racist attack in the same week.

Finalist JoJo Siwa - mixed feelings.
Seems unfair to have a pro dancer as a celebrity participant.
A female-female couple is a huge step and JoJo has instantly become a gay icon. Bet it's a long time before we see a guy-guy couple, though.

Anyone actually watching?

I watch, or at least watch in pieces. I'm interested, but I can't stand the Tyra Banks show, so I watch some of it live-ish and watch the other dances on vid. JoJo isn't the only one who has had "dancer" on their resume, although they all claim that the dancing they did didn't help them much with ballroom, to which I say bullshit. If you can dance well, particularly something difficult, you know how to take instruction, you know how to practice, and you have great balance and musicality skills.

Melora Hardin, that just got dumped, was Roxie Hart on Broadway. Amanda Kloots was on Broadway as well as having been a Rockette. But they did make the gay guy dance with a female.

JoJo's my favorite of those left.

Thanks. So, pro dancers = a semi-finalist and 2 of the finalists. Funny that.

Otoh, Mel C, eliminated on October 18, did her share of Spice Girls dancing, but she's oldish like Melora.

Good luck.

All for the better, IMHO.

There's always ice hockey. Although that probably has been upgraded as well.

I guess if one wants violent, injurious entertainment, there's always the packed concert venues.

I don't know much about Pete Davidson, but I'm guessing he must have the biggest most talented dick in the world. Now hanging out closely with Kim Kardashian, he's got quite the history with some very hot ladies. If he beds Taylor Swift, he'll complete a grand slam before he's 30.
Davidson dated comedian Carly Aquilino from 2014 until 2015,[18] and dated Cazzie David, daughter of comedian Larry David,[67] from 2016 to 2018.[68][69][70]

In May 2018, he started dating singer Ariana Grande.[71] In June 2018, Davidson confirmed he was engaged to Grande, but the engagement was called off in October 2018.[72][73][74][75] Grande's song about Davidson titled "Pete Davidson" appears on her 2018 album Sweetener. She also referenced him in her song, "Thank U, Next", with the lyric, "Even almost got married / And for Pete I'm so thankful".[76]

In early 2019, Davidson was in a relationship with actress Kate Beckinsale, a woman twenty years his senior. In response to media comments about the age difference, he said that such an age gap was new to him and that the media should ask older men in longer relationships with younger women such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Alec Baldwin, Larry King, and Donald Trump about it.[77] He also dated actress Margaret Qualley until their relationship ended in October 2019.[78] He was involved with Kaia Gerber, daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford, from October 2019 to January 2020.[79] In August 2021, he split from Bridgerton actress Phoebe Dynevor after a five month relationship.[80]

Swift's post-relationship song might even be nice ;) . FYI, Qualley is Andie MacDowell's daughter. Hellacious genes.

The subject just came up within the past 2 weeks:
Emily Ratajkowski Breaks Down Why Women Find Pete Davidson So Attractive
The supermodel made some very good points about why many see the “Saturday Night Live” star as much more than an aimless basement dweller.
(with video)

Contrary to popular belief, Pete Davidson is not some kind of mystical male siren who is able to lure gorgeous celebrities with his magical big dick energy ― at least according to Emily Ratajkowski.

The supermodel explained on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” Tuesday that the “Saturday Night Live” star’s appeal is much more down-to-earth, and that he simply has a lot of qualities that many women look for in a partner.

“I think he’s great,” Ratajkowski said, when Meyers showed her a photo of the two modeling together for a Moose Knuckles campaign....

“Pete — he’s got the height. Obviously women find him very attractive,” she said.

Ratajkowski then pointed out a serious truth about why some view Davidson as nothing more than a living embodiment of his airhead “SNL” character Chad.

“I feel like only other men feel [that he isn’t attractive]. Guys are like, ‘Wow. What’s that guy got?’”

According to Ratajkowski, it’s much more than just a bunch of tattoos and an open invitation to crash in his mom’s Staten Island basement whenever he wants.

“I mean, he seems super charming,” Ratajkowski said. “He’s vulnerable. He’s lovely. His fingernail polish is awesome. He looks good!”

Another big bonus, she noted, is that Davidson also has a “good relationship with his mom.”

“We love it. It’s hard to find [men with those qualities],” she concluded....
Then, he's really, really funny. Not definitive, but if anyone should know what outrageously beautiful, smart, talented and successful women like . . .

Good SNL. Some bits I liked:

Jeanine Pirro Cold Open

I guessed correctly! Not that it was that difficult. The Rittenhouse trial was also in the lead set of jokes on Weekend Update, including a good poke at Goofy Gaetz:

Weekend Update: House Passes Build Back Better Bill

Walking in Staten
A group of men (Marc Cohn, Pete Davidson, Big Wet, Method Man) perform a song about walking in Staten Island.
I love that Marc Cohn is in it.
I would love a whole miniseries about Staten Island with Pete as the edgy antihero and Jost as the corrupt politician
And Michael Che as the mob boss.
Pete is killing it this year.
Pete really is The King of Staten Island.
I don't think that I have ever wanted to both live in a place, and NOT live in a place so badly at the same time.
Tonight's show is incredible. Laughing all the way through.
