Those people have never understood anything about communism or socialism, neither positive nor negative. It all started back in the 50's when the Soviet Union really was an adversary in the "cold war" so advocating for an enemy would have been a bad thing, and they could just use "communist" as a shorthand for anything that could be associated with the USSR. And it could be applied to any other country or ideology they didn't like, and it became a generally scary word. But over time, even with a loss of influence of real "communists" throughout the world, and no evidence whatsoever that there is any significant interest at all in the US of pursuing anything related to communism, they're still able to scare the rubes with just the word.
