Psaki swipes at Fox News hosts who privately tried to get Trump to stop the January 6 rioters but took a different tone publicly: 'Disappointing but not surprising'

White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Tuesday called out prominent Fox News hosts for privately trying to get former President Donald Trump to stop the pro-Trump Capitol rioters on January 6 before publicly blaming the insurrection on antifa and others.

"Well it's disappointing and unfortunately not surprising that some of the very same individuals who are willing to warn, condemn and express horror over what happened on January 6 in private were totally silent in public," Psaki said during a press briefing.

"Or, even worse, were spreading lies and conspiracy theories and continue to since that time. So, disappointing, not surprising, unfortunately we've seen a trend from some of the same individuals," she added....

The House select committee investigating January 6 revealed the texts during a hearing on Monday. Republican Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, vice chair of the bipartisan panel, read them aloud, including ones from Fox News hosts Sean Hannity, Brian Kilmead,e and Laura Ingraham.

"Can he make a statement? Ask people to leave the Capitol," Hannity texted Meadows as the riot was ongoing on January 6.

"Please get him on TV. Destroying everything you have accomplished," Kilmeade wrote.

"Mark, the president needs to tell people in the Capitol to go home. This is hurting all of us. He is destroying his legacy," Ingraham texted.

... the hosts floated conspiracy theories claiming that groups like antifa had infiltrated the crowd and were behind the attack. The FBI said its found no evidence that outside groups such as antifa had been involved in the riot....

On his radio show, hours after his text to Meadows, Hannity said "we had the reports that groups like antifa, other radical groups — I don't know the names of all of them — that they were there to cause trouble." And on his TV show, Hannity suggested that "bad actors" could have been responsible for the violence.

Since then, the Fox News personalities have downplayed what happened on January 6....

Fox News under fire for failing to cover 6 January committee’s expose of star anchors’ texts to Meadows

... On Monday, when the House committee was reading out the texts, Fox News did not air the revelations, drawing ire from other news publications for not covering the bombshell revelations....

“In case you’re wondering if Fox News is the 1/6 committee hearing tonight, the answer is no. Neither is Newsmax. Neither is One America News,” Mr Steltar wrote on Twitter....

“Fox viewers are being shielded from the Fox hosts’ urgent texts to Meadows,” MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell said on Twitter.

While Mr Hannity hosted Mr Meadows on his show on Monday night, he did not mention the texts exchanged between the two and instead focused on the partisan nature of the committee and its findings.

The Daily Beast noted that, even though Mr Hannity called Mr Meadows to discuss that contempt vote against him, yet “the subject of the bombshell text messages never once came up on Monday night”.

“In their eight-minute friendly chat on Thursday night, though, Hannity did not mention the texts at all. In fact, the majority of the conversation revolved around the ex-Trump aide blasting the House committee’s recommendation that the Department of Justice charge him with criminal contempt of Congress,” the report noted....

Multiple legal analysts noted how Rep Liz Cheney used incredibly particular legal language that might open the door to a criminal referral for former president Donald Trump for his actions during the Capitol riot on 6 January.

Ms Cheney, who serves as the vice chairwoman of the select committee investigating the Capitol riot, made the remarks during the committee’s vote to hold former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows in contempt of Congress and after she read a series of text exchanges between Mr Meadows and Mr Trump’s eldest son Donald Trump Jr and various Fox News hosts.

“Did Donald Trump, through action or inaction, corruptly seek to obstruct or impede Congress’s proceedings?” Ms Cheney said.

Harvard Law School professor emeritus Laurence Tribe noted that Ms Cheney’s words specifically referred to US Code 1505.



The code specifically says that “Whoever corruptly, or by threats or force, or by any threatening letter or communication influences, obstructs, or impedes or endeavors to influence, obstruct, or impede the due and proper administration of the law under which any pending proceeding is being had before any department or agency of the United States, or the due and proper exercise of the power of inquiry under which any inquiry or investigation is being had by either House, or any committee of either House or any joint committee of the Congress” should be fined under the law and potentially imprisoned....

But, oops — all the cities clearly labeled in the map Bongino displayed — including San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Honolulu, D.C., Austin and Denver — are the healthiest in the country, according to a WalletHub analysis, the very source cited by the program.

Bongino’s map also mistakenly names “Irving” in Texas in the top ten list. The WalletHub analysis actually refers to “Irvine,” a city in California, as among the healthiest.

The actual unhealthiest cities named in the WalletHub analysis cited in Bongino’s program include cities in Louisiana, Alabama, Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, West Virginia and Tennessee — all red states.

Viewers on Twitter reported that Bongino’s program was modified when it was repeated later Saturday night — without the blatantly inaccurate map listing the “most unhealthy” cities.

Still, he nevertheless scapegoated Democrats for running unhealthy cities— even in the face of the eliminated, starkly contradictory, analysis....
