USWNT players wear 'Protect Trans Kids' wristbands in SheBelieves Cup victory over Iceland in Texas

Several players from the United States women's national team wore athletic tape on their wrists with "Protect Trans Kids" written on it during their SheBelieves Cup game against Iceland on Wednesday.

The wristbands, worn during Wednesday's game in Frisco, Texas, were a protest against a letter Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sent to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. In the letter, Abbott wrote that employees and licensed professionals should report transgender children and their parents to state authorities to investigate gender-confirming care as child abuse.

Lyon forward Catarina Macario showed her wrist to the camera after scoring her second goal at the end of the first half.

"With the platform we have, we really wanted to show why this team is different and why we do things that are much bigger than just the game," Macario told reporters after the game....

Several players also posted the wristbands on social media with messages of support for transgender children, including USWNT captain Becky Sauerbrunn.

"To deny gender-affirming resources to trans kids and to threaten their parents and guardians with claims of child abuse is MONSTROUS," she wrote on Twitter.

"If you want to help, support groups like @EqualityTexas."

... The USWNT beat Iceland 5-0 -- with goals from Macario, Mallory Pugh and Mewis -- to win the SheBelieves Cup.

Boston Mayor Wu (D) seeks limits on residential picketing after weeks of noisy protests outside her own home

The legislation comes as protesters have continued to gather for weeks outside the mayor’s home in Roslindale in opposition to COVID-19 vaccine mandates for city employees. The mandate encountered opposition in January and was blocked by an appellate judge in February.

Wu was also subjected to racist remarks in December 2021 for her city-wide mandate that those entering indoor establishments be vaccinated, NextShark previously reported.

Protesters would gather as early as 7 a.m. outside Wu’s home to create noise by shouting, banging drums and blowing whistles. The rallies have reportedly not only disturbed Wu’s family but her neighbors as well, according to NBC.

Wu previously described the protestors outside her home to Boston Public Radio on Jan. 18 as “people who feel that the way to get their point across, or express their strong emotion, is through violating boundaries of decency, of what's appropriate,” Newsweek reported.

Judge blocks Texas investigation of trans teen’s parents

A Texas judge on Wednesday blocked the state from investigating the parents of a transgender teenager over gender-confirmation treatments, but stopped short of preventing the state from looking into other reports about children receiving similar care.

District Judge Amy Clark Meachum issued a temporary order halting the investigation by the Department of Family and Protective Services into the parents of the 16-year-old girl. The parents sued over the investigation and Republican Gov. Greg Abbott's order last week that officials look into reports of such treatments as abuse.

Meachum wrote that the parents and the teen “face the imminent and ongoing deprivation of their constitutional rights, the potential loss of necessary medical care, and the stigma attached to being the subject of an unfounded child abuse investigation."

Meachum set a March 11 hearing on whether to issue a broader temporary order blocking enforcement of Abbott's directive.

The lawsuit marked the first report of parents being investigated following Abbott’s directive and an earlier nonbinding legal opinion by Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton labeling certain gender-confirmation treatments as “child abuse.” The American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal sued the state Tuesday on behalf of the teen.

“We appreciate the relief granted to our clients, but this should never have happened and is unfathomably cruel,” said Brian Klosterboer, ACLU of Texas attorney, said in a statement. “Families should not have to fear being separated because they are providing the best possible health care for their children." ...
