I thought it was a funny list, although sure not everything was awful - some of it was funny only because somebody thought it was strange. Cheese on pears (or with most any fruit for that matter) is a long-time favorite of mine. I'm not a dipper of hardly anything into liquid, though. Not into sog.

A French restaurant says it received insults and threats from customers who thought its signature Quebecois dish poutine was named after Putin

... La Maison de la Poutine, or The House of Poutine, tweeted on Friday that it received "calls of insults and even threats" over its namesake dish.

"It, therefore, seems necessary for us to recall that La Maison de la Poutine is unrelated to the Russian regime and its leader," the tweet read. It featured the restaurant's logo, a heart emoji, and the Ukrainian flag....

The restaurant went on to offer its support to "the Ukrainian people who are courageously fighting for their freedom against the tyrannical Russian regime."

... Last week, Quebec restaurant Le Roy Jucep joined the fray, saying it was removing the word "poutine" from its branding in protest of the invasion, according to Canadian daily the Ottawa Citizen.

The diner, which claims to have invented poutine, said in a now-removed Facebook post that the dish would temporarily be called "fries cheese gravy," per the Citizen.

This isn't the first time a potato dish has been renamed over a political conflict: In 2003, French government resistance to the Iraq war led some restaurants — including three congressional cafeterias — to temporarily refer to French fries as "Freedom fries."

Our Estate

The official date on the Title Deed of Rust en Vrede is March 12th, 1694. The property was granted by the Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel. The Cape Dutch buildings on the property date back to 1780, and today, they all have National Monument status. They are living history, used on a daily basis - I still live in the Manor house where I grew up, and the original winery is now the Rust en Vrede Restaurant.

My parents, Jannie and Ellen, acquired Rust en Vrede in 1977 and immediately embarked on a full restoration of the Estate. First, they restored and equipped the original winery, and in 1978 my father made the first vintage of the modern era. An extensive vineyard re-planting also took place, focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. Over the years, our wines have gone from strength to strength, and today I am fortunate to work with a team like ours and privileged to call Rust en Vrede my home.

The company was founded and in operation for 14 years before apartheid ended. And for about 3 centuries before that, SA was the land of discrimination, and the Rust En Vrede company was going then, as well.

Now, if you want to discuss something relevant, I guarantee that I did more to end apartheid than you did - organizing a campaign and protests to get our university to divest, drafting and sponsoring a statewide initiative and lobbying our legislature for divestment, hosting a visit by Desmond Tutu and organizing a local celebration on the day of the 1994 SA election.

I also saw Nelson Mandela at the Oakland Coliseum on 6/30/1990, something I'll bet you didn't get off your fat ass to do.
