Re: The car thread ...
The clear lens backup light part of one of my tail lights fell out, threw up its guts on the pavement, and broke into two pieces. I've glued it back together with Gorilla Glue and then glued it back onto the tail light but I know it won't last and that I need a new tail light or new car. One guy in TX had an ad on ebay for the whole tail light assembly but he wants $250 for it. I laughed my ass off and am thinking about sending him something in the mail sealed with Gorilla glue on all sides. What an asshole. Texas. shit

Are you fucking crazy? The vast majority of driving I do is in reverse. I especially like how sensitive the steering is when traveling backward at high speed....it's much more responsive to the slightest turn of the wheel compared to driving forward.

Well, you could always replace the backup lights with headlights, so at least then you'd see where you are going.neoplacebo wrote: ↑Tue Feb 22, 2022 6:16 amAre you fucking crazy? You car isn't all that old, in the world of collectibles, and there were a lot sold. I'm surprised it's hard to find parts. It's not even old enough to be in the classic parts places. Might try these people:

Thanks. I'll check them out. I've already been on Rock Auto and 1A or A1. Neither had original type lens assys. They mostly have newfangled LED type stuff or else another alternate configuration that's not anything like original. So far the Gorilla glue is keeping the broken piece on, though.O Really wrote: ↑Tue Feb 22, 2022 12:08 pmYou car isn't all that old, in the world of collectibles, and there were a lot sold. Fuck DeJoy.O Really wrote: ↑Wed Feb 24, 2021 6:24 pm"Oshkosh Defense, a division of Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Corp., will assemble 50,000 to 165,000 of the new Next Generation Delivery Vehicles at its existing U.S. manufacturing facilities. The new fleet will include electric vehicles as well as fuel-efficient gas-powered vehicles which will have the ability to be retrofitted with new electric systems in the future. USPS described the deal as the first part of a multibillion-dollar 10-year effort to replace its aging delivery vehicle fleet and be more environmentally friendly. "neoplacebo wrote: ↑Wed Feb 24, 2021 5:32 pmGod Hell! I've never seen a picture windshield before. And those wipers are laughable. That must have been back when the USPS was going broke; no fucking wonder if they spent money on that. Notice no logo on the bastard; no one would claim to have made this goddamn thing.
I was going to snark "probably one of DeJoy's slimey associates." Then I read a little more, and I'd say definitely a sleazy deal somewhere.
DeJoy was CEO of High Point, North Carolina-based New Breed Logistics from 1983 to 2014, and retired after his company was acquired by the Connecticut-based freight transporter XPO Logistics for a reported $615 million. Following that acquisition, he served as CEO of XPO's supply chain business in North America until his retirement the next year and was appointed to a strategic role on XPO Logistics' board of directors where he served until 2018.
A 2001 audit found that the USPS had given New Breed Logistics a noncompetitive contract of more than $300 million starting in 1992. The audit concluded that if the bidding had been competitive, taxpayers could have saved up $53 million. Reporting in 2020, NBC News wrote, "The audit raises questions about whether New Breed knowingly overbilled the Postal Service, and it renews scrutiny of the background and qualifications of DeJoy, a prolific Republican Party fundraiser and donor who was appointed to lead the Postal Service over objections from many officials involved in the selection process." In addition, two reports to Congress in 1999 stated that $9 million and $33 million separately paid to New Breed could have been "put to better use." The USPS inspector general of the time retired in 2003 after a federal investigation into her abuse of authority, waste of public money and promotion of questionable personnel practices.
When he was named Postmaster General and CEO, DeJoy was president of LDJ Global Strategies, a Greensboro, North Carolina-based boutique firm with interests in real estate, private equity, consulting, and project management.
Worst Postmaster ever!U.S. Postal Service finalizes plans to purchase mostly gas-powered delivery fleet, defying EPA, White House
The U.S. Postal Service finalized plans Wednesday to purchase up to 148,000 gasoline-powered mail delivery trucks, defying Biden administration officials' objections that the multibillion dollar contract would undercut the nation's climate goals.
The White House Council on Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency asked the Postal Service this month to reassess its plan to replace its delivery fleet with 90% gas-powered trucks and 10% electric vehicles, at a cost of as much as $11.3 billion. The contract, orchestrated by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, offers only a 0.4-mile-per-gallon fuel economy improvement over the agency's current fleet.
Vicki Arroyo, the EPA's associate administrator for policy, issued a statement calling the Postal Service's decision a "crucial lost opportunity."
"Purchasing tens of thousands of gasoline-fueled delivery trucks locks USPS into further oil dependence, air pollution, and climate impacts for decades to come, and harms the long-term prospects of our nation's vital mail provider," Arroyo said.
Vicki Arroyo, the EPA's associate administrator for policy, issued a statement calling the Postal Service's decision a "crucial lost opportunity."
"Purchasing tens of thousands of gasoline-fueled delivery trucks locks USPS into further oil dependence, air pollution, and climate impacts for decades to come, and harms the long-term prospects of our nation's vital mail provider," Arroyo said....
Environmental advocates assailed the agency's decision, saying it would lock in decades of climate-warming emissions and worsen air pollution. The Postal Service plans call for the new trucks, built by Oshkosh Defense, to hit the streets in 2023 and remain in service for at least 20 years....
Now that the Postal Service has finalized it agreement with Oshkosh, environmentalists are expected to file lawsuits challenging it on the grounds that the agency's environmental review failed to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act. They will probably base their case on the litany of problems Biden administration officials previously identified with the agency's technical analysis....
EPA officials have also criticized the mail agency for basing its analysis of electric vehicles on current charging infrastructure, which is in a nascent stage, and for only considering either shifting to an entirely electric fleet or switching over just 10% of its delivery vehicles. The Postal Service's own analysis showed that about 95% of mail carriers' routes could be electrified.

The article doesn't actually say that Musk has this ability, but I don't think that I would want any car that can be switched off by corporate without my permission.

Re: The car thread ...
Today I just happened to notice that my left front tire has an area about 4" long along the edge of it that protrudes as if it is being poked out from the inside. The tires are Uniroyal Tiger Paw GTZ 245/50-16 and have less than 14,000 miles on them. I went to the place I bought them today and got nothing but bullshit. The first thing the guy said to me after we went outside and looked at the tire was "these tires are six years old." Well, I bought them on 4-10-17 and today is 3-14-22.....a period of slightly less than five years. So that means that they were nearly a year old when I got them. The tire store guy tells me "we don't sell Uniroyal tires" even though I bought them from his store. He blames the distributor (it's a Firestone store). I've been doing my own research since then and notice on the Uniroyal website that their tires are guaranteed for "six years from date of purchase" or from normal tread wear from mileage, whichever comes first. Tomorrow I will be going back to that store and whipping out some neo on them. I've already got my paper ready with "your name" and "store owners' name and number" and "distributors' name and number" lined out on it. I anticipate victory but am prepared for skirmish or outright battle. This store has very large windows on two sides that are about eight feet high and six feet wide. I might have to reenact that tire ad where the old lady heaves a tire through one of those windows. But I also have rocks. And as a former estimator for a security and alarm company I observed that there are no cameras in this store.

Tiger Paws were standard on the early GTO's, and had a little red stripe. Do they still have the stripe?

Good luck getting the store to honor the warranty.
Rather than throw tires or stones though the store's window, a letter (keep a copy) to Uniroyal and Firestone and the store itself and any chain it belongs to might be a good idea.
Good luck.

Re: The car thread ...
Already sent an email to Uniroyal, which is evidently owned by Michelin. They sent me a confirmation of my complaint less than hour later. In a few hours I'll be going back to the tire store. The last thing I said when I left there yesterday was "I won't be back." But I will revise that upon entry to the place by saying "other than me telling you I won't be back, I was right and you were wrong yesterday. Now let's get down to it; are you going to bat for this store or would you prefer I talk to your boss?" I've also found that three of my tires were made in the 25th week of 2016 (approx. early July) and one was made the 24th week of that year, approximately the end of June. This means all four were about ten months old when I got them on 4-10-17. Since the Uniroyal warranty is "six years from date of purchase" I anticipate total victory and will also push for additional concessions.Ulysses wrote: ↑Mon Mar 14, 2022 11:04 pmSounds like an internal tire failure.neoplacebo wrote: ↑Mon Mar 14, 2022 10:32 pmToday I just happened to notice that my left front tire has an area about 4" long along the edge of it that protrudes as if it is being poked out from the inside.
