I don't know what your problem is with where forum members live. Sadly, you'd probably like living in any of them. Asheville, and its surrounding areas is on practically every "Best Places..." list for at least 10 years. There's world class mountain biking, kayaking, white water, lakes, art, music, food from Beard-award dining to great barbeque. Asheville politically and culturally is more like San Francisco or Seattle, but did get gerrymandered into a district with much of the rural WNC mountains -that has politics a lot like Shasta County and CA mountains. Greenville (whack9) is also on a lot of Best of lists and offers a wealth of cultural and recreational opportunities. I don't know as much about the Bristol area of TN or billy.p's part of Florida, but a simple googling shows them to be great places for visits, vacays or living.

And sure, you could sell your over-inflated house and buy a major upgrade in any of these places. And a lot of people are. Most popular places for Californians to move include #7 NC. You could park your car collection and stuff here for $750K, and have $250K left over.

What makes you think I have a problem with where anyone here lives? I have noted that some of them are ultra-sensitive about where they live. Not my problem.

As for selling here and moving to NC, that's a possibility. Bearing in mind the costs involved:

1) Real estate broker fees on sale: Probably about $100,000
2) Moving costs: don't know, but guessing $30,000
3) Real estate broker fees on purchase: For a $750,000 home in NC, probably $75,000

At that point, I'd be out $205,000. That leaves all of $45,000 left over.

Hardly worth it.

Plus as you well know, California has a cap on increases of property taxes. I figure I'm currently paying about 1/3 of what I would pay without the benefit of Prop 13. What are property taxes in NC for a $750,000 home?
