Goofy Gaetz, paraphrased: We harm our military by embracing socialism.
Umm, idiot, our military is and always has been our most socialist institution. How did he get all the way through law school without ever learning how to define 'socialism'?
I suspect that the criminal case is largely rumor-based and/or is otherwise weak, else he would have been charged months ago.

Re: Goofy Gaetz
Matt Gaetz criticized 'red flag' gun laws and said any Republican senator supporting them is a 'traitor to the Constitution'
What a tool! As usual, Jan 6 traitor Goofy Gaetz is clueless about red flag laws and the Constitution. At worst, red flag laws temporarily remove phallic compensations from a volatile situation, and any "exploitation" can be soon corrected if necessary by hearings and appeals.

... 'Spare me the bullshit'
Responding to Gaetz's proposed amendment, the committee's chair, New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler, said it wouldn't make sense for the amendment to "declare" what Congress disfavors because the House of Representatives hasn't even voted on the matter yet.
Democrat lawmakers in the committee also pointed out that Florida — the state Gaetz represents — already has a red flag gun law following the 2018 Parkland school shooting, and that the Trump administration also supported such legislation.
"You know who didn't have due process? You know who didn't have their constitutional right to life respected? The kids at Parkland, at Sandy Hook, in Uvalde, in Buffalo, and the list goes on and on," Rhode Island Rep. David Cicilline said. "So spare me the bullshit about constitutional rights."
The NRA has whipped all of the RepuQ into line.Cicilline said that red flag gun laws are modeled after the government's response to domestic abuse cases and that they involve enough due process for the reporting system to be fair.
Gaetz's amendment failed to pass in a 24-18 vote along party lines. The bill, without his addition, received a 25-19 vote in favor of sending it to the House floor next week....

Re: Goofy Gaetz
He wanted to be untouchable.
At Least 5 Members Of Congress Asked Trump For Pardons, According To Jan. 6 Committee
The requests stemmed from their involvement in Trump’s schemes to try to subvert the 2020 presidential election.
... The requests stemmed from their involvement in Trump’s schemes to try to subvert the 2020 presidential election, which Trump insisted he won despite losing by several million votes.
The committee previously revealed that Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) sought a presidential pardon, something the congressman denied.
During Thursday’s public hearing on Capitol Hill, witnesses close to the Trump White House said in previously recorded interviews that Republican Reps. Matt Gaetz (Fla.), Mo Brooks (Ala.), Andy Biggs (Ariz.) and Louie Gohmert (Texas) also asked for pardons....
Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, confirmed to the committee that Gaetz and the other GOP members of Congress sought pardons.
“Mr. Gaetz and Mr. Brooks I know both advocated for there to be a blanket pardon,” Hutchinson said....
Brooks also released an image of the email he sent to the White House in December, on behalf of himself and Gaetz, recommending that the president give “general (all purpose) pardons” to every Republican who voted to overturn the election after the Jan. 6 riot.
In a speech at Trump’s rally before the attack on the U.S. Capitol, Brooks said, “Today is the day American patriots start taking down names and kicking ass.”
Hutchinson said that she heard Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) also asked for a pardon but that she didn’t hear it directly. “I heard that she asked the White House counsel’s office for a pardon,” she said.
“The only reason I know to ask for a pardon is because you think you’ve committed a crime,” Jan. 6 committee member Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) said....
Thursday’s hearing featured testimony from former Justice Department officials Jeffrey Rosen and Richard Donoghue, as well as Office of Legal Counsel director Steven Engel, who described Trump’s efforts to throw out the election despite their objections that doing so would be unconstitutional and contrary to the will of the American voters.
Donoghue, who was then acting deputy attorney general, testified that when Trump threatened to replace Rosen as the acting attorney general with Jeffrey Clark, an assistant attorney general in the department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, he was told the change would spark mass resignations in the Justice Department.
“Mr. President, I would resign immediately. I would not work one minute for this guy,” Donoghue said he told Trump, referring to Clark.
During the Jan. 6 committee hearing, Kinzinger described how Perry lobbied the White House to elevate Clark in the Justice Department in order to gain his help in subverting the election. Perry improperly brought Clark to a White House meeting and texted White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, urging him to appoint Clark to a role with “the authority to enforce what needs to be done.”
... “They knew that every bit of what they did was a lie and it was wrong,” Kinzinger said of those who sought pardons. “That is all the more reason to respect those who came here to testify today.”
Trump last week reiterated his intention to pardon people charged in connection with U.S. Capitol riot if he becomes president again in 2024.
“And if I become president, someday if I decide to do it, I will be looking at them very, very seriously for pardons,” Trump said of defendants in the insurrection.
Twitter Users Mock Matt Gaetz's 1st Tweet After His Pardon Request Is Made Public
"Pardon me?" many Twitter users asked the Florida congressman.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) became a victim of “pardon bombing” Thursday on Twitter.
It happened after the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol revealed that the lawmaker was one of at least five members of Congress who attempted to get pardons from then-President Donald Trump for their roles in helping Trump attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
But Gaetz wanted his pardon to be a lot broader than his role in Trump’s election fraud, according to Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.
She told the committee that Gaetz had been pushing for a pardon since early December, according to Business Insider.
Former White House senior adviser Eric Herschmann told the committee that the “general tone” of the pardon request revolved around the idea that “We may get prosecuted because we were defensive of, you know, the president’s positions on these things.”
However, Herschmann noted that the pardon Gaetz was angling for may have been intended to also protect him from the sex trafficking investigation swirling around him.
“The pardon that he was discussing, requesting, was as broad as you could describe, from... the beginning of time up until today, for any and all things,” Herschmann told the committee....
Pardon me?Beg your pardon?Others pointed out that innocent people rarely request pardons.Pardon me? Traitor says what?
Hi Matt.
Why did you ask for a pardon?
CheersYou sought a pardon because you knew you committed a crime, helping Trump try to overturn the election.
Sit down. One person had a pertinent question for the congressman. You asked for a pardon, and now the DOJ will impolitely ask you to head to your cell, Matt.Beg your pardon, Matt, do you take Venmo?

Re: Goofy Gaetz
Maybe besides Pence, lock them all up!FL Rep. Gaetz Was At Trump Meeting To Overturn Election: Jan. 6 Panel
The Florida lawmaker was among several high-profile House Republicans at the meeting who later asked Trump for pardons, the committee said.
Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz was in attendance at a meeting with then-President Donald Trump and other House Republicans to strategize how to overturn the 2020 presidential election, it was revealed Tuesday during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot hearings in Washington, DC.
Gaetz was one of several high-profile Republican representatives at the meeting Dec. 21, 2020, at the White House. It occurred just days after an "unhinged" meeting between White House lawyers and Trump allies, which also was a focus of the hearings Tuesday.
The meeting's purpose was to "disseminate his false claims and to encourage members of the public to fight the outcome on Jan. 6," Rep. Stephanie Murphy, D-Florida, said.
According to White House visitor logs presented by the committee, the following House Republicans were at the meeting in addition to Gaetz:
Rep. Brian Babin, Texas
Rep. Andy Biggs, Arizona
Rep. Louie Gohmert, Texas
Rep. Paul Gosar, Arizona
Rep. Andy Harris, Maryland
Rep. Jody Hice, Georgia
Rep. Jim Jordan, Ohio
Rep. Scott Perry, Pennsylvania
Then-Rep.-elect Marjorie Taylor Greene, Georgia
Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama helped set up the meeting but was not physically present for the discussion.
Then-Vice President Mike Pence, Rudy Giuliani, and Mark Meadows, then the White House chief of staff, also were at the meeting, Murphy said.
Meeting members discussed election theories espoused by John Eastman, a personal lawyer for Trump, particularly that he believe Pence could reject electors and their votes in his role presiding over the Jan. 6 joint session to certify the election results, according to Murphy.
Gaetz also was among several House Republicans who sought pardons from Trump following the Jan. 6, 2021, riots. Six of those — Biggs, Brooks, Gaetz, Gohmert, Perry and Greene — were involved in the Dec. 21 meeting, according to the committee.

"one stands out for its utter weirdness: the story of the Israeli consulate staffer, the cartoonist who created Dilbert and a complicated shakedown scheme tied to a former CIA operative captured in Iran."
Although there has been plenty of attention paid to Matt, "scant attention has been paid to the mysterious cameo of Jake Novak, the broadcast media director of the Consulate General of Israel in New York."
“Scoop I can’t report: Rep. Gaetz is the subject of a sex with minor…. I trust the source. Charges/accusations apparently ‘very credible',” Novak wrote to Adams."

Pardon me?Matt Gaetz: Women Who 'Look Like A Thumb' Shouldn't Gripe About Abortion Rights
The U.S. congressman is being blasted for his overtly misogynistic speech at a conservative student summit.
... Texas Democratic State Rep. Erin Zwiener was one of many to lambast the congressman on Twitter: “Gaetz, we don’t care if you think we’re hot. Either way, we deserve to make our own decisions about our futures.”
Matt Gaetz believes that a person's physical attractiveness (by definition, highly subjective) should be proportional to their level of human rights. Pathological AF.Me: bans on abortion are plainly motivated by cruel misogyny
Matt Gaetz: you're goddamned rightBREAKING: Matt Gaetz delivers his most disgusting remarks to date ...Not tonedeaf or sexist whatsoever.Question: Misogyny, what does it look like?...This sounds like Trump’s she’s-too ugly-to-rape-defense.... Offensive beyond words.

I think the problem is that a lot of your fellow voters probably don't really care about stuff that a few years ago would have been unrecoverable scandal. It's not whether it's true, or whether or not they believe it. They just don't care and it's irrelevant to their support.

This article, published less than a week before the WaPo article, predicts the opposite.
If true, .Matt Gaetz facing 'wave of indictments' in sex trafficking case: legal expert
GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida is facing increased scrutiny after a bombshell Washington Post report that he sought a preemptive pardon for sex trafficking....
Legal experts were stunned by the report.
Attorney Tristan Snell, who successfully prosecuted the case against Trump University, expected indictments after the midterm election.
"This was not the action of an innocent man," Snell tweeted. "This was the action of someone who knows he’s guilty — and wanted a literal 'get out of jail free' card."
"Why hasn’t Matt Gaetz been indicted yet? Because the investigation has ballooned — covering a huge web of political corruption, fraud, and embezzlement of COVID relief funds, as well as sex trafficking," Snell wrote. "A wave of indictments is anticipated for after the November election."
The watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) wrote, "To the best of our knowledge, Matt Gaetz is the only sitting Congressman to ever ask for a pardon for sex trafficking."
... Harvard Law's Laurence Tribe wrote, "Gaetz is such a slime that his conviction and jailing would lower the average character of the prison population almost as much as it would raise the quality of Congress." ...
