Yep, They're Coming to Take Our Guns!

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I was looking at Mad American's suggested definition of what would constitute "arms" for purposes of Second Amendment interpretation, and I'm pretty sure the Street Sweeper would qualify, although now it is currently severely restricted. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDdy8OVv8m0

Seems the same principle that got a 12-shot semi-auto 12 gauge considered "destructive" and required lots of hoops to get one would reasonably apply to the Newtown AR-15 type weapons.

So if someone off the deep end wanted to wreak havoc in a mall, theatre, school, former employer, or on the street, why wouldn't he use a Street Sweeper? Only reason I can think of is that they're expensive and hard to come by - unlike the Newtown models.

This is also why I try not to leave the house too often.

On the other hand I'm damn proud that Canada leads the industrialized nations of the world in toaster-related deaths.

No story has a good ending that starts out "we wuz jus' sittin' around drinkin' one night..." Or maybe that was a good ending - cleaning up the lower end of the gene pool.

You've been reading "Last Words of Rednecks" haven't you? But here's a true story. I saw an interview with Picabo Street in which the interviewer asked her had she ever done any extreme downhill, like heli-ski or from a sno-cat. She said she had and they asked how she got interested in that. She said she was out with some friends and they decided to go. Just said, "here, hold my beer, I'll be back soon" and off she went.

Speaking of taking our guns... it appears the FBI in Alabama has done an excellent job in demonstrating the technique of removing a gun from the cold dead fingers of a paranoid (on his record), anti-government (according to his neighbors) survivalist (NTTAWWT) gun enthusiast.

Been there, done that, in college when I punched out a Coke machine that stole my money.

Most rational, informative article I've read on guns and gun control.

It's not like no one has ever asked them before. There's data everywhere and decades of research. We tracked down the best of it so you don't have to.

Jump to a question:

How much gun violence is there in the U.S.?
How many guns are there in the U.S.?
How do mass shootings differ from other types of gun violence?
What gun control laws currently exist?
What could be done to reduce gun violence?
Would fewer guns result in less gun violence?
Would gun control result in fewer guns?
How often are guns used in self-defense?
Won't criminals kill with other weapons if they don't have guns?
What has worked to reduce gun violence?
Are the White House proposals likely to be effective?
How does the U.S. compare to other countries?
What don't we know yet?

Vrede wrote:Since gun opponents and gun freaks agree that mental health reporting and restriction can be improved, why not institute a basic psych exam in order to possess a gun? Other than the fact that some of our forum's gun freaks would obviously not pass the screening, I wonder what rationale they have for opposing the idea in principle. Surely they don't support the demonstrably unstable being armed, right? Right?
Psych evals are nowhere near reliable enough to use as a valid instrument. Even with in-depth individual evaluations, psychologists' abilities to predict patient violence is abysmal.

Real question for anyone who thinks they're going to find themselves "defending the Constitution" with their guns. Exactly how do you see this happening, and who do you plan to engage? Will you shoot local police when they - what? How about legislators - do you expect your merry band of militia to invade Raleigh? Take the governor hostage? Shoot the tax collector in his office, or the census taker at your door? Who and under what circumstances do you expect to shoot in "defense of the Constitution"?

And it would appear those dogs were formerly "law-abiding" until they pulled the trigger, too. And the "victim" seems to be "law-abiding" too, except for leaving the loaded gun where his dog could get to it.
