Update on charges for the 31 moon-barking droolers with guns:
The first charges were just to be able to haul them in and keep them over the weekend. According to the prosecutor, "additional charges may be forthcoming as our investigation continues."

Too much ugliness detailed in the article for me to excerpt. The linkages between these neo-Nazis and the GQP and even law enforcement are rock solid and undeniable.
In a giant step into the dark ages, the newly adopted platform of the Texas Republican Party now officially declares that homosexuality is an “abnormal choice.”
The shocking platform, voted on by 5,100 delegates and alternates Saturday at the party’s biennial convention in Houston, also affirms Texas Republicans’ opposition to “all efforts to validate transgender identity” ― and calls for a ban on any gender-affirming medical care, including hormone therapy, for anyone under the age of 21.
et the platform supports debunked and dangerous conversion therapy — which it terms “Reintegrative Therapy” — to turn members of the LGBTQ community into heterosexuals and eliminate “unwanted same-sex attraction.”
The platform spells out other positions explicitly opposed to the LGBTQ community under its section on “Homosexuality and Gender Issues.” It opposes offering any special protections for members of the LGBTQ community, and renounces penalties for those who discriminate against the community.
Delegates at the convention were peppered with flyers attacking the LGBTQ community, including one warning: “Beware of the Homosexual Agenda.”
... In other platform issues, party delegates voted to support barring the teaching of sex and sexuality in schools while calling on Texas schools to teach the “dignity of the preborn human” and that life begins at fertilization.
Delegates also declared Joe Biden’s presidential election victory illegitimate.
"giant step into the dark ages" is right.

Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson signaled Thursday that he would vote for legislation to codify same-sex marriage into federal law.
The headline writer and reporter might be overly enthusiastic.
... "Prior to the Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision on gay marriage, I supported civil unions," Johnson said in the statement. " After Obergefell, I considered the issue settled.
"Unlike Roe v. Wade, I do not see any scenario in which the Supreme Court would overturn Obergefell. The Respect for Marriage Act is another example of Democrats creating a state of fear over an issue in order to further divide Americans for their political benefit. Even though I feel the Respect for Marriage Act is unnecessary, should it come before the Senate, I see no reason to oppose it."
That might mean that he would abstain, which will be no help towards:
... Sixty votes would be needed to break an anticipated filibuster, meaning Republican support is required to move the bill foward — specifically 10 votes....
Might still be a johnson.

Some of those Republicans sure are wacky. Wasn't there another one of them a few years ago who railed against homosexuals and was later busted for soliciting sex in a men's bathroom stall? I forget who that asshole was.

Yeah, but I'm not so sure this is the same thing. IMNVHO this is more brainless partisanship than hypocrisy, although certainly Republicans are hypocrites by definition. I think it shows just how dug in the Repukes are against anything proposed by the Dems - even voting not only against the interest of their constituents, but against their own family interest. You're pretty much an unredeemable shithead when you vote against a bill that your constituents want, that your family would benefit from, and that you yourself favor just to deny the "other side" a shared win.

Not some comedy act or Dem group, the Spokane, WA Spokesman-Review is the newspaper of record for the inland Pacific NW and northern Rockies. Larry Craig scandal
A male prostitute alleges that he had a three-year relationship with prominent right-wing evangelical leader Ted Haggard, who has said that homosexuality is a “sin” and “devastating for the children of our nation and for the future of Western civilization.” Haggard denies the allegation.
Haggard is president of the National Association of Evangelicals, representing more than 30 million conservative Christians. Time Magazine ranked him as one of the 25 most influential evangelicals and Harper’s contributing editor Jeff Sharlet noted, “No pastor in America holds more sway over the political direction of evangelicalism than does Pastor Ted.”
Every Monday, Haggard participates in a conference call with members of the Bush administration. He has stated, “I’m a right-wing religious conservative. … I joke that the only disagreement I have with George Bush is on what type of truck to drive.”
Haggard’s accuser, Mike Jones, says “he has recorded voicemails and a letter from Haggard, and that he had also witnessed Haggard use methamphetamine.” ...

I don't know what percentage of the evangelists are who are also liars cheats thieves and perverts, but it would seem that the higher the profile and greater the wealth, the more likely they are to be total con artists. Billy Graham personally excepted, but even he passed along the sleaze gene to son Franklin.

This isn't homophobic but I read a story earlier today that says Ron Johnson voted against the bill to spur the making of chips in the US. The dumbass probably thought it was about potato chips. But a good example of how they vote against things that are for the general good. They're sick.

Kind of amazing that the America First crowd doesn't vote for America First.

What bill is that? The Respect for Marriage Act has not reached the Senate yet and Johnson the johnson (usually) has said that he will not oppose it.

I don't know the name of it. But it's a bill that was introduced that provides initial funding for the creation of a US factory to make computer chips, which apparently are only made in China and other countries. I think the impetus for it was the chip shortage a year or so ago that forced the shutdown of some US auto plants. Here's a story about it.

Ah, thanks. I would listen to the debate, but I'm sympathetic to Johnson the johnson (usually) and Bernie!'s opposition to "corporate welfare”.
Using a name considered derogotory doesn't negate the actual value of a proposal no more than sneering "socialist" negates a good national policy.
Johnson the johnson says:
“It makes no sense whatsoever,” Johnson said in the interview on Fox Business. “We have more than enough money sloshed around the economy to invest in semiconductor manufacturing here. It’s about aligning the incentives properly. We’re not looking at that at all. We’re just throwing more money at the problem, which is what Washington does.”
Okayfine. What "incentives" does he have in mind that don't involve "throwing money"?

I'm not informed enough to debate this issue or to read his mind, but many "incentives" like tax breaks could also be called "corporate welfare”. In general, I'm tired of industry demanding direct taxpayer largesse in order to produce products in the US or in one state or community over another. The kinds of incentives I like are more long term - improving worker education, infrastructure, healthcare, childcare, etc so that there are more successful environments for businesses to compete and thrive in.

Well I wouldn't be the one to argue that the system we have in the US is the best we could do, but it is what it is. And what it is, is a system where corporations, fulfilling their raison d'etre of maximizing profit, become commodities that offer some (real or theoretical) benefits to communities who want to "buy" them. And often, it works. Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill would not be nearly the great area it is now without the Research Triangle Park or some variation thereof. I doubt most people around Greenville-Spartanburg would argue that their purchase of Michelin and BMW wasn't worth it.
And if making chips in the US was such a profitable idea, sure somebody would do it and not require government incentives, but it's probably not. Huge start-up costs and questionable labor availability make it more risk than most companies would want.
I think there's more than a little specialized equipment and unique circumstances in actually making these things.....highly specialized machines, highly trained workers, "clean" rooms, etc. The factory would be more than just a standard building.
