Yeah, some clueless, some hateful.O Really wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 3:05 pmAs one commenter pointed out, there's always going to be some weird stuff that happens, but the question would be how systemic the (racist/homophobic/misogynic/stupid) issues are. Others, such as teaching only girls home ec and teaching only "wifely" roles are bad. But probably they don't do that one anymore

In 1980s nursing school the teacher got us talking about tolerance with diverse patients. Naturally, the conversation moved exclusively to tolerance for gays. I let this go on for awhile then raised my hand and said, "I think that I can handle caring for homosexuals, but does all this mean that I have to be nice to Republicans?" I think that the class was about equally divided between folks that got the point and ones that thought my question was sincere.2."As a closeted LGBT person, it was always fun when there were debates about same-sex marriage or something like that. Remember when "1984" seemed a gross exaggeration of totalitarianism and with extremes not possible in any modern country? At the time it exceeded even the most totalitarian real government. And the idea that the entire language could be changed in meaning and people would be told that what they see did not exist and what they know is not reality?
Effin' unbelievable.
In this case, it's not that history has always been accurate, but now there's not even any attempt to tie the story to the known facts.

Education in DerSantistan
I would never make it through one of those seminars without getting kicked out (and losing my job?). I would try to keep my cool, but I would challenge every single falsehood and omission. Vrede don't play that.
One thing - Ron Filipkowski says it's "mandatory", but the statement from FLDoE at the very end of the tweet says it's "voluntary". If mandatory, how would that be enforced? Teachers are employed by their district, not the state. Would the state really cut off funds over one or more refuseniks, or if an entire district refused?
Remember when progress was happening at a dizzying speed? Now it's regress that is.
Historical whitewashing is the most insidious form of cancel culture. It is an evil, one that intentionally obscures past evil to makes future evil more likely to recur. The cruelty is the point

There are likely many reasons … but people wonder why there’s a teacher shortage.
This is the ultimate goal of @GovRonDeSantis civics lessons and all of Florida's schools mission statement #FloridaDeservesBetter
9000 teachers short, and this is what Ron is focused on! Protect your children and women’s healthcare, dump this chump! #VoteBlueToSaveAmerica
He WANTS honest, qualified teachers to keep quitting so he can replace them with cheap, unqualified drones who’ll carry out his racist agenda. It’s not possible to overstate how self-serving & unAmerican DeSantis is, or how much damage he’ll do to Florida.

The school system in Madison County, N.C., plans to put AR-15 rifles in emergency safes in each of its six schools as a part of a plan for enhanced security in the wake of the Uvalde, Texas, school shooting earlier this year.
“We were able to put an AR-15 rifle and safes in all of our schools in the county,” Sheriff Buddy Harwood told the Asheville Citizen-Times. “We’ve also got breaching tools to go into those safes. We’ve got extra magazines with ammo in those safes.”
The breaching tools are intended to allow police to break down barricaded doors without having to wait for the fire department....

School administrators in Macon County said they are still investigating how two former students broke into a gun safe to steal an AR-15 from a school resource officer's office.
Officials say the two suspects, Adam Cisneros and Lee Clark, entered the Red Boiling Springs School overnight, crawled through a window in the School Resource Officer's office and then managed to breach a gun safe to steal the AR-15 and two bulletproof vests....

One America News Network founded by Robert Herring Sr, no military service despite turning 24 in 1965.
It's difficult to find who's running Herring Networks and OANN now.
Herring Networks doesn't seem to have a website.
OANN doesn't name its current leadership. Odd.
On-air "talent" bios:
Rachel Acenas, no military service.
Elma Aksalic, no military service.
Mike Dinow, no military service.
Lilia Fifield, no military service.
Natalie Harp, no military service, Liberty grad, Dolt .45 staffer.
Kara McKinney, no military service.
Stephanie Myers, no military service.
Chanel Rion, no military service.
Pearson Sharp, no military service.
Addison Smith, no apparent military service, Liberty grad.
Greta Wall, no military service.
Dan Ball, maybe military service as a journalist, not a fighting man.
Almost all have B.A.s, maybe one has military service. Vets without Bachelor's - good enough to teach Florida kids, not good enough for OANN.
Sent to Media Matters for America, no idea if they'll have any use for it.

Re: Education thread
It's not really worth mentioning since the drooling moon-barkers actual intent is to wreck the public school system, but why aren't there any garden variety good citizens in Florida - Dem or Repug - that know that teaching is part talent and part training but is a specific ability not necessarily gained by just a high level of subject material. In university, a teacher can get by with being an obnoxious expert with no teaching skill - at least if s/he's expert enough and publishes enough - but not in high school and certainly not in middle or elementary school. Those teachers have to know how to get a kids interest, how to teach them in a manner an in a pace they can understand, how to motivate and how to build an interest in learning itself. Not exactly something you get just from spending a couple of years in the army.

The whole thing is insane. I can tell you from direct experience that there are more than a few people in the military that are really stupid. A good many of them make the military a career. This applies to officer as well as enlisted ranks but is generally more prevalent in the enlisted ranks, mainly because there are just a lot more of them than there are officers. In any case, this FL shit show won't include any former officers since they have to have college degrees to begin with.

Re: Education thread
To be fair, one article I read said that the vets will have to get 60 hours of college course work, the equivalent of 2 years of presumably education classes, and demonstrate proficiency in one or more subjects. So, it's not like it will be straight from barracks to classroom. Instead, the typical teacher requirement of a Bachelor's plus a teaching certificate, with or without a Master's, will be reduced for the vets to essentially an Associate Degree. In other words, 5 or 6 years of higher education will be reduced to 2, not sufficient but better than zero.neoplacebo wrote: ↑Tue Aug 16, 2022 7:44 amThe whole thing is insane. This still would not get a vet a job at OANN. In fact, it may have an unspoken bias AGAINST vets.

I agree. The only thing vets have going for them IMO is that they held a job for 4 years, but lots of people can say that. This is DerSantis pandering at the expense of FL kids, nothing more.

Re: Education thread
News chick was talking about getting back to school supplies and a list they showed included a "scientific calculator." They still make free-standing calculators? Turns out they do and Texas Instruments and Casio are happy to sell one for all the middle schoolers going into algebra or whatever class it is you'd use that. Most of them are remarkably cheap, though, looks like from about $10-$30 at Target or online.
Or, as it turns out, you can just go to the calculator app in your android and turn the phone sideways to landscape view and ka-zam poof - the keyboard changes and includes all the square root, pi, cos, tan, and interesting a key for "sin" which will probably be banned in several states.

Speaking of DerSantis pandering at the expense of FL kids, though this is sadly true in other right-wing states:
Fuehrer DerSantis and his Brown Shirts must approve approve uff vot your kinder read, even books donated by that seething hotbed uff vokeness, the Rotary Club.Schools Block Donated Dictionaries Amid Ron DeSantis' Book Crackdown
The holdup comes as a huge number of donated books and purchases are frozen by Florida's new education restrictions.
The definition of “woke” literature from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has apparently grown so expansive that a public school district is now blocking a donation of dictionaries.
Hundreds of dictionaries planned for distribution by a local Rotary Club are gathering dust as the Sarasota County School District awaits guidance from Florida’s Department of Education on how to proceed in light of an education law recently signed by the Republican governor, The Sarasota-Herald Tribune reported Friday.
All book donations and purchases have been halted in the district for the rest of the year because the new law (HB 1467) requires books to be approved for suitability by state-certified media specialists, a job that doesn’t currently exist in the district....

Re: Education thread
Maybe DerSantis hasn't done anything to justify legal impeachment or recall or whatever might be possible in the dictatorship formerly known as the state of Florida, but clearly he has trashed a lot of things that most garden-variety mainstream middle of the road Floridians would support. Is it possible that a majority of Florida voters really think his ummm "education" approach is good? And how much local misery are voters willing to put up with just so DerSantis can cultivate his out-trumping Trump national persona? If he gets re-elected, then sadly they deserve what they get. C'mon, billy.p - California is calling.
The last rational person to leave Florida shouldn't bother to turn out the lights - just kick dirt into the grave.
