70-13 is embarrassing. I didn't see the game, and probably Miami cleared their bench and you can't blame benchers for wanting to do good, but c'mon.

Why would you have a problem with Auburn scheduling Mercer? I can think of several teams that play Mercer quality opponents for better than half their games. Some even throw themselves parades and get rings.Vrede too wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 11:32 pmAlso:Vrede too wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 12:15 pm(7) Utah -2.5 @Florida

Meanwhile, Auburn's schedule
"The toughest schedule in the land, though, has to go to the Auburn Tigers. They have a killer calendar ahead of them, playing both Georgia and Alabama on the road, plus six nationally ranked SEC opponents before the end of October."

Re: College football
I don't have a real problem with the tradition of scheduling a doormat for a first game warm-up or for homecoming, but it seems this year teams got a little carried away. Billy.p has always ridiculed teams with patsy schedules, and I have generally defended the Devil's position that if the system rewards wins more than anything else, why would you give yourself the most difficult path to a first place. But there comes a point when the even becomes no longer a game or any type of real competition. And 70-13 would be included there. Yeah, yeah, I know the Bethune Cookmans and Louisiana-Monroes all volunteer (beg) for the slaughter and get paid well to send their players to be humiliated by Hurricanes or Longhorns, but still. There's a reason college sports are organized into divisions. Play at least in your own sandbox.

Seems disrespectful to both team's players to me, some of whom will get injured, even if the doormats get paid well. There is an argument that says if you play teams over your head, you'll not only get money to support your program but you'll also do better against the teams in your own conference. That seemed to work well for App State as they moved from lower to higher level. And sure, sometimes David does better than you thought or Goliath has a bad day. But yeah, I agree it's disrespectful to both teams.Vrede too wrote: ↑Sun Sep 04, 2022 1:56 pmSeems disrespectful to both team's players to me, some of whom will get injured, even if the doormats get paid well. "over your head" is one thing, neo-stomping level over your head is another. I wonder if there's a point where the theoretical skill improvement isn't negated by the morale deflation.O Really wrote: ↑Sun Sep 04, 2022 2:12 pmThere is an argument that says if you play teams over your head, you'll not only get money to support your program but you'll also do better against the teams in your own conference. App State had been one of the better FCS schools for years and App State > Michigan was at least possible, even if not very likely. Not so much some of these other matchups. Otoh, I think it's feasible for the Terps to lose to anyone.

Man - I wouldn't want to be LSU's kicker tonight. He might want to change his name and transfer out to East Southern Kentucky state.

Or the coach. They just ran 2 yards for the TD, should have gone for the win rather than the tie. And it had to be FSU, crap.

Re: College football
Kelly said he thought the kick would be a "higher percentage" for success, despite already having two field goals blocked and a freshman kicker playing his first game. Opps. 'Hawks send condolences.

Re: College football
Even IF the point-after attempt had "a higher-percentage chance of success", dubious given the freshman kicker and two blocked field goals, they'd still only have a 50-50 shot in OT, thus significantly reducing the overall chance of a win. Sheesh, your offense just drove "99 yards in 1:05 of game clock". Trust it.O Really wrote: ↑Mon Sep 05, 2022 11:10 amKelly said he thought the kick would be a "higher percentage" for success, despite already having two field goals blocked and a freshman kicker playing his first game. Re: College football
Kelly might shoulda asked himself "what would Saban do" since that's who he's getting evaluated by. I'm not usually in favor of the "win or lose" two point attempt, with an overall average of about 43% successful, but in this case he's got a weak kicker and a legend to live up to/create. Not off to a good start.

Re: College football
I would have guessed higher than 43% and some folks say a little bit higher, but not by much. This article says the SEC extra point success rate is around 97%. So, that creates an 86 to 97 per point ratio, advantage kick. However, at the end of regular time the odds of winning with a kick are cut in half by the 50-50 odds of winning in OT - 48.5%, pretty close to the 43% with the 2 point try. In general, a coach will then consider factors that give one team an edge in OT, but the game so far doesn't indicate there are any and he could be wrong. In specific, LSU's kicking game struggles so far probably took the odds well south of 48.5%. So, I still think the right call was going for 2, but not with as much certainty as at first.O Really wrote: ↑Mon Sep 05, 2022 12:53 pmKelly might shoulda asked himself "what would Saban do" since that's who he's getting evaluated by. I found this while googling:
Should You Run or Pass When Going For Two?
It's for the NFL but the data says 57.14% success rate for rushes, 45.18% for passes. Have you seen this article, Pete?
